farmer's susides
by ram kalaspurkar on Apr 13, 2009 08:23 PM  Permalink

Do you know what is the reason behind this? It' s not the lack of irrigation , low price to farm produce when it is in their hands, or so many other resons always quoted by the experts. The fact is ,the side effects of the technologies which are used by the seed co's are now killing the farmers. they are creating new viral deseases against which plant just cannot create immunity .So gmo are are the sole culprit. Rather the co's which are using them. Now the species such as mangoes , kikar sheasham and many more , we have lost for ever. this is odd to read but it fact.

It's disheartening to hear.....
by Neer on Dec 08, 2007 12:49 AM  Permalink

I am from Bihar and there, the prices of agricultural products are very cheap, exactly a fourth of what it is in other states but even then the farmers in these states(Maharashtra, MP, Karnataka, Andhra..) are committing suicides, I wonder why the prices are so high in these states. They(vendors) say this is due to the transportation charges, Sure, everyone knows where does the money go? Vendors are happy, consumers are happy, State is Happy, what about the Producers??

farmers suicide
by johny mathew on Dec 07, 2007 08:00 AM  Permalink

farm products cost does not match with the inflation. goverment introduces populitic plicies to reduce inflation by the reduction of the prices farm product only , in turn farmers turns bankrupts and debtors. different economic and plotical status of different satates is helpful for the goverment to introduce these types of policies .it is not a great sin if the agriculture products cost rise in accordance with inflation . farmerers are victims of these kind of populistic policies of the politicians I belive full convertability of Re will solve the problem

Keep things in perspective
by Minto on Nov 29, 2007 12:30 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

That is about 20000 farmers per year. This is a significant number and is very sad. However given india's population this is not an extraordinary number that the media is trying to potray. India is rapidly progressing. 30% of Indian polpulation enjoy a quality of life comparable to the west. The rest will catch up by 2020 as outlined by Dr. Singh. 123 treaty will make india a part of the developed world.

It is truly sad
by on Nov 28, 2007 12:30 PM  Permalink

As in most tragedies it the the children who are left behind to face the problems for absolutely no mistakes of theirs. While at one side of the coin we are celebrating the achievements of Indians/Indian companies gaining in wealth, the other side is bleeding with such stories of unthinkable misfortunes. Can we as humans try to be a little more compassionate and try to do something more to help out these poor farmers who are so desperate?

1.5 lakh farmers committed suicide between 1997 and 2005
by Mansukhlal Shah on Nov 28, 2007 03:34 AM  Permalink

Whilst India is economically moving ahead at an unrivalled pace and industry moguls are vying with each other to be top in the league of billioners in this world, 1.5 lakhs of hard working farmers find themselves in unimaginable financial hardship that they are compelled to commit suicide at an average rate of almost 20,000 a year. Are we living in a compassionate society or in a society that is least perturbed by such deaths? Have we ever stopped to consider the plight of the family left behind deprived of the family bread winner plus any meagre assets they may have had that now belong to shark money lenders? Is this what our freedom fighters expected of us? Our clergy and laity preach sermons from the mount and comfort themselves with the thought that they have done their duty. If this situation is not brought under control India should not be surprised if it faces, if not now then in the near future, a rebellion no authority in the world will be able to bring it under control. Time for remedial action is now and not tomorrow.
