1.5 lakh farmers committed suicide between 1997 and 2005
by Mansukhlal Shah on Nov 28, 2007 03:34 AM

Whilst India is economically moving ahead at an unrivalled pace and industry moguls are vying with each other to be top in the league of billioners in this world, 1.5 lakhs of hard working farmers find themselves in unimaginable financial hardship that they are compelled to commit suicide at an average rate of almost 20,000 a year. Are we living in a compassionate society or in a society that is least perturbed by such deaths? Have we ever stopped to consider the plight of the family left behind deprived of the family bread winner plus any meagre assets they may have had that now belong to shark money lenders? Is this what our freedom fighters expected of us? Our clergy and laity preach sermons from the mount and comfort themselves with the thought that they have done their duty. If this situation is not brought under control India should not be surprised if it faces, if not now then in the near future, a rebellion no authority in the world will be able to bring it under control. Time for remedial action is now and not tomorrow.
