SHOOT-TO-KILL SHOCKER One bullet for every four SIMI KAMBOJ AND IMRAN AHMED SIDDIQUI
March 16: Bullet marks on those gunned down in Nandigram suggest police %u201Clost their head%u201D and shot to kill, flouting guidelines for controlling and dispersing mobs, senior officials conceded today.
All the 14 confirmed killed had been shot either in the chest or in the stomach, and a woman was hit in the back, a list compiled by The Telegraph shows (see chart below).
The seven unidentified bodies are that of six men and a woman, aged between 20 and 30 %u2014 all with bullet injuries in the stomach or in the chest.
A preliminary probe carried out by the state police has shown that between 400 and 500 rounds were fired to disperse a group of around 2,000 people assembled at the Bhangabera bridge on Wednesday morning.
The cold statistic translates into one bullet for every four persons, an %u201Castronomical figure%u201D, according to veteran officers.
%u201CThe police guidelines clearly state the purpose of firing is to disperse the crowd and not to kill,%u201D a senior police official said. %u201CThe term that we use is %u2018controlled firing%u2019 %u2014 to deter and disperse the crowd.%u201D
Quoting from the manual, an official said the police can open fire only if baton-charge fails and non-lethal options like tear gas shells and rubber bullets are exhausted.
%u201CThe guidelines state that you have to hit one person in the leg if the situation becomes violent and then watch to see if the crowd is deterred,%u201D an official said. %u201CIf the situation still does not improve, some more people should be shot at, but always in the leg where the possibility of death is minimal.%u201D
All the 10 bullet-hit patients admitted to Calcutta%u2019s SSKM hospital have been struck above the waist. Many of the 23 patients with bullet injuries in the Tamluk and Nandigram hospitals have also been hit above the waist.
Even the non-lethal options were not used as they should have been. Allowing modern tools of crowd management to idle, the police lobbed metal-cased tear gas shells.
Such shells, with a limited range of less than 100 metres, force the police to go closer to the crowd %u2014 a recipe for snapping taut nerves and triggering panic reactions on both sides. Besides, the flaming-hot shells themselves can cause grievous injuries if they make body contact, unlike smoke grenades whose plastic canisters melt during explosion.
Bhumi Jana, the husband of Supriya who was shot in the back, said: %u201CMy wife was not trying to harm the police, she was simply trying to run away in fear and they shot her in the back, the bullet pierced her heart and she died.%u201D
The officers The Telegraph spoke to said %u201Csomething must have gone wrong%u201D for the police to have fired with %u201Csuch vengeance%u201D. %u201CIt all seemed pretty indiscriminate,%u201D said a senior official. %u201CIt seems that the leadership must have lost control over their men who shot deliberately to kill.%u201D
Sheikh Raja%u2019s brother-in-law Shamsher Khan, too, believes that the 18-year-old, who was to have appeared for the Higher Secondary exams in a few days, had been deliberately killed by a %u201Cpolice gone mad%u201D.

Statesman News Service KOLKATA, March 16: Noted jurist and former Supreme court judge Mr Justice VR Krishna Iyer has severely indicted Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee%u2019s Marxist government for unleashing %u201Cterror%u201D on Nandigram and has once again reminded Marxist leaders both here and in New Delhi that %u201Csocialism means humanism and not terrorism%u201D. In a letter written to Mr Prakash Karat, CPI-M general secretary, the retired Supreme Court judge has demanded that %u201Caction at party level must be taken%u201D against Mr Bhattacharjee%u201D if governance over humanity is to be exercised for the benefit of the peasantry%u201D. In his letter dated 15 March, the veteran jurist has said, %u201CI am sure thousands like me will be shocked by the Nandigram incident. Please, please have some regards for those who feel that socialism is not terrorism, but humanism; and misrule by gun will not be the rule of the Left in State authority%u201D. Writing from Kochi, he has said: %u201CI had and still have great hopes that the Marxists, if in power, will rule with compassionate ideology and win votes and people%u2019s cooperation beyond party barriers. But to my horror, the terror practised yesterday at Nandigram fills me with dread and disappointment.%u201D Mincing no words the retired judge came down heavily on Mr Bhattacharjee saying %u201Cthe illusion of exploitative power has led the ministry to govern by the gun. The consequent bloodshed demands your urgent attention and commands the party%u2019s authority to arrest the frequency of police barbarity and the resultant bloodshed%u201D. All those were CPI/CPIM supporters. When CPIM pushed, they started opposing CPIM.
This is the right time to go to the right. Because from left you can overtake so come to the right and overtake the issues Mr. Buddha(CM). You know Mr. Buddha traffic is high so you have to wait but wait for the time. Time will come then you go to the right and overtake other parties. Now situation is bad so do not go to overtake other parties otherwise it will hamper you. Your analysis is based on an presumption that CPIM led LF won bigtime (in 2004 national election and in the state election) because of Buddha's industrialization drive.
What proof you have for that? Just because Anandabazar wrote repeatedly doesn;t mean its gospel truth. They have their wheels to grind. Isn;t it?
Trinamool's Vote didn't loose much vote in Urban Areas. Then why CPIM lost so many seats?
That's because CPIM's wholesome use of Gujarat. They painted every wall with Gujarat, and Muslims (mostly urban and some non-urban) who were traditionally voter of Trinamool voted in favor of CPIM for first time.
CPIM did the same thing in Kerala in last election.
But this is blatant communal appeal. IN FACT ELECTION COMMISSION BANNED MANY CPIM VCDS WHICH WERE FULL OF HINDU IMAGERY AND GUJARAT RIOT.
Now Muslims of WB know thanks to Sachar that CPIM takes their vote, but no development/

So according to u..If someone made an error, do repeat that again nd again, nd Tht might solve the problem.. Grow up guys!! I guess thts not the proper way to solve any problem. It should be the other way round, one should always learn from the past mistake, not only the person who made the mistake but others as well. So guys, think and then write something which can make this kind of discussion/Forum more meaningful. Don't take it otherwise..
