Where has all the money spent on taking anti flooding measures gone? I think today the situtation has worsened instead of improving. I think todays flooding has broken last records.
Unless the Indian Courts become strict in dealing with Politicians and babus and punish them seriously for their negligence of the jobs entrusted to them, the situation in India is not going to improve. Let the Mumbai High Court take suo mote cognizance of negligence of Mumbai Municipal Commissioner/Authorities and punish them by sending them to Jail even for 2 days as because of their negligence and not doing their duty properly the whole of Bombay came to standstill and many lifes must have been lost.
Even a 2 day jailterm for Mumbai Municipal Commission were send a clear measage to babus that they must do their job properly otherwise they can be punished for it.
Judiciary can only tame these Babus and Politicians. The only hope for the common people of India. Prakash Vazirani

dear friend file a RTI application asking them money spent and where for anti flooding measures and then file another petition for waste of national money on department.
Friends, One best solution to bring down flooding in Mumbai is to go for rain harvesting. It should be made mandatory for all buildings to collect rain water and let it in well/Bore through simple sand/charcoal filter.By this you are benifited on many counts-reduction in flooding, increasing the water table, decreasing the salinity of water and indirectly substantial financial savings in terms of road repairs/road damages. In chennai after it was made amndatory in our area we are seeing the benefits ourselves. So let every mumbaite spend less on eating sweets and use that money for rain harvesting! It is good both ways!!

There was some move some time ago to make RWH compulsory, it is the only solution. But for reasons they know best, the Govt has not issued any notification yet. Tax incentives must also be given to manufacturers of RWH equipment to bring the price down.

All our planners, thinkers, and we ourselves should try our best to start living in natural conditions, giving a small space for concrete structures to stand and more space for rain water to be imbibed into soil where ever it strikes the ground. If we make hundreds of hectares of land concretized or barren, no doubt we are inviting runoff, consequently floods. At last me have developed to such an extent that we have forgotten to save and protect the three most important elements for our living that - pure air, potable water and unadulterated food. Except this we are getting all other thing on this earth, now. These things nature has provided us. But we destroyed it arrogantly to hurl the flag of material development. At least now everybody should try to give less importance to live in concrete structures and more importance to live in natural locales, that is within our residential or office boundaries. When 75% of living space is covered with vegetation and only and hardly 25% with bloody concrete, the human existence can be guaranteed for the future. Otherwise the human existence itself will be questionable. More planting - less mining, more naturality - less artificiality, is demanding. Try to minimize all kinds of pollution at all three stages like mining, manufacturing and utilization levels, as whatever we are now noticing is due to global warming. The main culprit here is our unending wants, those demand manufacturing, that in turn demand mining.
BMC is India's most corrupt body surassing Bihar & UP. The new Municipal Commissioner is an honest & efficient IAS officer but he has to face an army of 125000 corrupt staff & a big bunch of corrupt politicians.
I missed by MBA exam paper today due to trains not working. I stay at Kalwa and had to write exam at Mumbadevi center of Madurai Kamraj University . There were no trains going towards VT from Thane Station this morning at 8:30 hrs.
We know full moon has high tides, Mumbai cant take more than 50 mm rains. But what difference that we are brining every year into this with this knowledge. Nothing?

Dear Friend, This is the last thing you should do.... start accepting things as it is. I am currently living in Singapore and came to Mumbai recently and was appalled by the condition, more so because people there feel as if it is OK, and have accepted these things. I was astonished when people still say there is no place like Mumbai and things like if you stay in Mumbai you cannot leave it as you will start liking it. I think this is one myth we can do without. When people die in Train bomb blasts and come back the next day to board the train we say its the spirit of people of Mumbai whereas it clearly shows how we value human lives and how much pressure there is on common people that they have to put their lives on line. Same is the case with rains. In the end I believe that you get what you deserve and not what you desire and by accepting all these things we make sure that we deserve this. Let's get together and make it clear to everyone, including our Politicians and the city administrators, that this is not the Mumbai we want,we can still have all the good things of Mumbai without having all the bad things (these are not mutually exclusive. But more than this lets be ready to make the sacrifices that are required to make it a heaven in reality and not only in our biased vision. Hope someday we can make it happen. Don;t loose that hope

Sivajibhai, I have every plan of returning to Mumbai. Its only a temporary career move not out of choice but out ot necessity, I just mentioned Singapore bcoz only after coming here did I realize what is so badly missing in amchi mumbai, it has opened my eyes. regards
Only prayers can help people in mumbai.. the so called BMC is failure, the government of maharashtra is a failure and the govt of india is a big failure, now whom to blame...just blame ourselfes because we had casted the vote to bring these malices to the power. Just check the last BMC election the Shiv sena's again came to power.. what they did to this city nothing other then building a statue of woman who has done nothing to this country, the state or mumbai, only people benefited is the family of thakre's who got rich and getting richer but the facilites and benefit to the people is poorer and poorer & very pathetic condition.. so instead of blaming why we realise that we can use our voting power notonly for electing stupid peoples and gundas we can use it to boycote the election once we do this atleast there will be some awareness to this corrupt politicians that its hight time and they have to do something..the city is already under power shortage now its flooded now whats reamaining..why you pay taxes dear mumbai kars stop paying the taxes...

I would say status of MUMBAI has changed common dear start searching some better place to live where atleast we can earn and have to pay less.
As maximum tax payer in the countries are we MUMBAIKARs, but what we get in-turn. Nothin
So its better to hide our income like politicians and live our lifes aaram se...
Now its time for us to get habituated to all this scenarios as every year this RAIN and GOVT> damages to common is gonna be there..
Well once again Mumbai is drowning and people can'nt do anything except panic. Mumbai faced a pathetic situation in 2005 when it was nearly washed out by roaring rain, same thing seems to happen in 2007. No lessons taken from 2005, when Mumbai nearly transformed into Venice. One day might come that Mumbai will become an Island. Join hands friends as it is not a task of alone person. We need to strive hard otherwise we might loose one of the India's most beautiful city.

The Congress has used and abused this country for decades now. Every official in every department in this country is available for a price. As Indians, we have become saleable commodities. There is corruption at every level, and now the judiciary has fallen prey as well. The Opposition Parties are as bad or worse than the parties in power. I think we need to have a Civil Movement or a Civil Programme that should be imbedded in our Constitution from now on. I am Indian first, my religion, my state, my language, my caste, my status comes last. As an Indian, my nation must come first. As an Indian, I must pay my taxes honestly, I must uphold the rights of others if I want mine to be upheld. I must have a fear of the law of the land which will deter me from breaking it in the first place. Why is it that I do not think twice before driving down a No Entry street, is it because the money in my pocket tells my brain that I can buy my way out in case there is a cop at the end of the road? Why is it that I do not declare my proper income and cheat on my taxes every year, is it because I can save money this way every year, and end up paying a smaller amount as a bribe, if the taxman was to raid my place every 5 years? Instead of advocating ideas such as Hindutva and Minority Commissions and Quotas, that divide our nation, why can't we come together as "Indians"?

you are absolutely right sir and voiced sentiments of many. The erstwhile east india company/britishers were running the country much better than today's incompetent and corrupt politicians and officials. The next best alternative could be to ask TATAs or Reliance to run the Mumbai. It would be foolish to expect anything worthwhile from politicians. They are all busy in increasing their own wealth in India and abroad. If milkowners are on strike, politicians will continue to get the milk-it is the common man who will suffer. Even if mumbai becomes venice, politicians will be safe and they will review situation from the helicopter and probably laugh at common man's plight.

UI, Tell me what was the population of mumbai when british ruled(Ruined?)India? Now so many buildings have come up even on reclimed land there is little water way for it to reach sea and everybody suffers by flooding. So donot view the problem in isolation. The best solution for this is rainwater harvesting-It should be mandatory for all buidings. In Chennai our area used to get flooded four years before-now after the rain harvesting it has reduced drastically-thanks to the persistance of Jayalalitha on the implementation of this scheme. In fact in several towns people themselve laid pipe line to harvest rain water and let it into the temple tanks and now ground water level has gone high and salinity has come down.So instead of criticizing others you start doing it in your house right today-if every body follow suit Iam sure next year there will be no flooding in Mumbai!
