these pakistanis have nothing to say about Indians...you have no rights to stay here and also the so called lungi is not worn by any Indians, its the culture of Muslims wearing lungi.tamilians, kannadians, or any other part of INdia don't use lungi as their tradition... also it is banned inside temples...only these illegal migrants from Pakistan makes the Mumbai or any other city in India a nasty ones...blasting bombs, kidnapping and rapping...first you lost from Indian soil and go to Pakistan, no not even to Pak..you go to Iraq or saudi...STUPID
I am not a Mumbai native and have stayed in most of the metros and some smaller cities. My comments on the pros and cons of Mumbai. The cons first... Cons 1. One of the dirtiest and smelly cities(after kolkata) except for some posh residential patches. 3. Great disparity between rich and poor. Huge slum populations. 2. Extremely crowded. 3. Long travel times- intracity. 4. Not so pleasant climate.
Pros 1. One of the most industrious/hardworking set of people I have seen. Life is a struggle but they have made it a way of life. People are very helpful. 2. Very lively city.Lots of variety in culture, food and entertainment. If you have the money, this is the city to be in. 3. Level of corruption is comparatively lesser than other cities that I have been in. 4. Public transport though overburdened, is great. You don't have to worry being stranded in a place for a long time. 5. Celebration of Festivals. Celebrate almost all big festivals with pomp and enthusiasm.

Yes I agree with You..i stayed in Mumbai for 12 years shifted to hyderabad 3 months back..missing mumbai like hell....Hyderabadis are so lazy n laidback...not at all hardworking...though im a telugu myself, i love only mumbai..it is the best city in the world..want to go back..
There were great times open fields where we could play cricket matches
Movie tickets were Rs. 2 Fewer cars no rickshaws only taxis and walking was fun.
Andheri was really far away suburb.
Now people tell me that India is doing great I wanted to see it first hand.
As plane landed in the night, Still a huge crowed at the airport but still not so bad. Took taxi to go home in Andheri. Great hotels next to the airport Not bad at all. Taxi stopped at a traffic light and I saw an old man sitting out of what seemed like a small one room house in the middle of that hot sweaty night. And I could see at least 5-6 more people sleeping inside. No electricity, light was from a candle. They were sleeping in the middle of all that chaos of noise, fumes and dirt. Old man looked resigned not even sad. This was at 2 Am.
And I thought somewhere on the road to progress many more (read millions and millions) have been thrown out of these exists of poverty. It seemed worse than when I grew up.
I saw many more things in that visit to convince me that we are not there yet but worse we could be going backwards for majority.

It is absolutely true about the vast open fields in Andheri( E) & vast open march land in the West till about 10 yrs ago. Today the East is Prime location for Hotels, businesses & residential buildings. This attracts seasonal migrant labourers from outside the city who work in construction sites & day labourers many choosing to live this way to save money & send to their families. True, many have little choice but with no city / municipal laws to prevent such a situation it will not stop.

Good post.. You mentioned that you had lot of playgrounds in mumbai when u were young. I want to know what happened to those. I am from a city in Andhra and we too used to have similar spacious grounds which disappeared completely when I visited that place last time. It was very sad...

As Vernon has posted East is taken over by the industry and Hotels.
In Andheri West today, there are just buildings and buildings everywhere. We used to play where Juhu Scheme ends and now that is completely gone. Only buildings reamin from JVPD to Lokhandwala to 7 bungalows. The land where there are no buildings are taken over by slums.
I feel when we enter Mumbai we enter in our own cocoon of Air-conditioned cars and apartments. Our only window to outside world is the TV. This window has shut down our minds and the windows to the reality.
But not long ago we used to travel hanging out of an almost empty Churchgate Andheri train with that cool breeze on a warm days watching the beautiful sea side and some fields. Walk around chaurchgate in a farily nice air. Visit the summer fair in cross maidan.
Take a double-decker bus ride in the front seat and the bus would really ride not crawl.

dear no return
development is measured by gnp, which is wrong. it should b measured by happiness of the people. in the name of materialistic development, we r destroying our ecology and increasing global warming, though it does not increase happiness. your own observation also points to same conclusion.
now a days there is too much stress on money. people think that if they have lot of wealth, they will b happier. but it is not true. the proof is that ambani brothers r not on talking terms despite huge amount of money they have.
intelligent people must find some alternative to the present method of development and measure of development.
Perhaps Mark Cherian should stop reading all those Commie propaganda about the West. Regarding his quip about NY city having no life after 8, one can only laugh at his child-like ignorance. As for his "only whites enjoy life after 8", again it just goes to show his total ignorance and biased pre-conceived notions not to mention his huge inferiority complex. One can only pity such folks - their naievity and infantile mentality. Get real, man, grow up!
For people who have their own car life is good in Mumbai. Its the city which never sleeps unlike NY or European cities where there is no life after 8!!...Only whites enjoy life after 8...There is safety only in ones own country.
70% of all urban Indians have no toilets or baths - they crap on the train lines, pavements and drains, where they also take their water for cooking and their baths. The figures are even more dismal for rural areas - less than 5% have toilets or baths - that's what open fields and rivers are for. But don't fret, the PM has an ambitious sanitation plan to provide toilets for all by 2020?

Indians Brilliant? Absolutely! That is why the IT sector and Indians domination H1B quotas.
Indians spineless? Absolutely! That is why that can't stand up for anything. Prefer a pacifist life style and seek cosy corners. Prefer to critisize conditions back home rather than work hard to change things. All the companies you listed originated in India by those microscopically few Indians who decided to sweat it out.
Indians filthy? Absolutely! Wherever you have a high density of Indians, overall hygiene and cleanliness plummets. Think of motels, restaurants and mini-Indias abroad.
