Does the Delhi Municipal Corporation bill the US Embassy in New Delhi or the BMC bill the US Consulate? If the answer is yes, then the same manner applies for the City of New York. It is strange that the City decided to approach the court to portray India as a tax defaulter. It is typical of the US to raise these side shows and tar, even their friends as some kind of defaulters. These tactics are deplorable unless of course, our staff had been found to be negligent on such small matters. The Americans love to enforce laws with a missionary zeal.

Go to Pakistan and advertise Imran.
if the US law requires us to pay the tax, then so be it! we'll pay the tax! but yes, the whole thing surely has got a lot to do with India's current projection of itself as a future world power. and remember that it's not just us but a small country like mongolia too that is bearing the brunt.
The NY city can file a case and even win the case but nobody has the right to enforce it!!!
If Indian embassy ignores the supreme court notice, what will they do? send them to jail? fine them? Nothing will work because staffers of Indian embassy have diplomatic immunity.
I think what is best for Indian Embassy to do is to ignore this entire thing!
Whenever the US president lands in India, the costs for the Indian Govt. are so heavy. They all get it for free. And the US president brings a whole village with him whenever he comes here, from chefs to bodyguards and the Indian Govt. is supposed to look after each and every one of them as if they are a part of a Victorian Era British royal entourage. The govt. is forced to relax some rules for the entourage, even allow US bodyguards carry weapons and roam around freely like high school bullies.
The costs for a US president visit for the home country are quite high, much more than that 18 million dollars or something that New York is asking India to pay.
So let us print out a detailed bill and bill the US president for every facility his high school bully entourage had used.

International rules are not the same. Do you think US embassy pays the same tax in Delhi that is imposed in NY?

The US President cannot veto the ruling of US Supreme Court. The ruling of the Supreme Court is the final decision.

US president CAN bring in a law so that the US supreme court will have no jurisdiction on this.
Also, the US President can grant pardon to anyone, on any ruling.

Even if the US president does not bring in an ordinance or grant pardon etc, nobody can enforce this...what will the NY city do?
Have the Indian embassy staff arrested for non-payment of taxes? These NY-city idiots know they cannot win but are fighting for ego purposes.

man, you got to understand that this is an issue with UN mission. the officials were on UN mission. Not US mission. UN has no special relations with USA. If fact USA is a major problem for UN these days. The U buliding has to be built somewhere . right ? it happened to be in new york usa. any visitor / guest at un is NOT the guest of USA. remember hugo chavez stood in UN and called george bush a devil 3 months back ?
When thousands of politicians do NOT pay taxes in India, I think it is ok that the Indian mission does not pay taxes to some extent, you see. The goras are making unneccessary hype about all this, let them come to India and learn how to live without paying taxes!!

Dear Nambiar, you are THE man. but my friend you got to be a dog or a potitician or a goonda to live in india without paying taxes. i am an unfortunate employee of a bloody company which deducts 35% tax from my salary and pays balance. i tried by very best to save 1 rupee tax. now way. chitahmbaram using his sadistic brain has closed almost all doors for saving tax. now i have only 3 choices - become a dog or a goonda or a politician
