understanding democracy....better late than never
by Mikkey Moouse on Jun 13, 2007 07:59 PM  Permalink

Democracy is "The People" in total....when a Politician offers promises to the ENTIRE population, its democracy....as happens in USA & European elections.

When the Politicians offers promisies to certain SECTIONS of the people eg. ethnic, religious, langauage groups etc, then its NO longer democracy....as happens in Indian elections.

Plea challenging Maya as UP CM quashed
by Bodh Ramdeo on Jun 13, 2007 06:06 PM  Permalink

Maybe India should opt for the Chinese totalitarian system, as surely, democracy hasn't worked - rather than advancing the best intersts of the masses and the nation, it has instead been used by criminals, with the aid of the corrupted judiciary to divide and subvert them, into near anarchy.
At least with a dictatorship, govt can put controversial and difficult decisions into effect, without worrying about the 'voter backlash' as there will be no voters.
Anyways, the country is already run by mafias and dictators, albeit for the 5 year duration and beyond, if they get re-elected. Lalu Prasad, Mulayam, Jayalithaa, Maywati, Karunanidhi et al have all behaved as despotic dictaors, using the power of the state to bulldoze their opponents, all with the willing participation and complicity of a corrupt judiciary.

Current Voting System
by bhabani satapathy on Jun 13, 2007 04:58 PM  Permalink

The current voting system is not providing any option to the voters if they are not satisfied to cast their votes to any candidate. Currently we are forced to franchise our votes to those bloddy rascels. Otherwise we are opting not go go for it.

NO, u cannot hold a job in BARC and ISRO or TCS simultaneously. But if u are in BARC and are applying for a job in ISRO, u need not resign from your earlier job until u get a job in ISRO and u want to keep it. Same logic applies to Mayawati as well.. she will quit as an MP

rediff is not a right plateform for such discussions
by rachita bholowalia on Jun 13, 2007 11:44 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

dear friends everyday we read abuses in various columns of rediff but rediff do not term as as an abuse due to their poor knowledge of indian abuses normally used on roads during fights and they term yr language full of facts as an abuse and hide yr msg.rediff is totally a biased and have no translation knowlege.when u write facts and then yr language can be harsh and their is nothing wrong but rediff is totally intolerant and on max occassions they hide truth by saying it as an abuse.
well the present case of mayawati and others is a slur on democracy and we have to bear such politicians from any party.they come to power and go for statues and waste crores of rupees.they r neither for poor nor for country. lohia and ambedkar never liked personalised worship but these political goons from every party waste taxpayers money.if they improve the position of poor then in next election the will not be able to use slogan--bring us to power to improve yr social status and no votes.mayawati first got elected as an MLA & then ran away by ditching BJP and became MP and now would go for MLA--see how much money is wasted in multiple elections one contests.today we blame mulayamraj but mayawati is responsible for this as she played a truant.mulayam contest as an mp and then as an MLA from two seats and now again from two seats--they r called saviour and messiah of our country.caste religion based politics would make us to face these traitors for ever till our country is destroyed-LALIT

Thank you for your nice comments. Still I hopelessly believe that unless and untill all Indian people academically and economically become literate, your urge for reform will go in vain. Currupt politician will say the last words with their so called fake majority.

Only way to get these people out of politics is by excercising your vote.. How many of us educated people vote for MP or MLA elections? If you take pain to cast your vote for right candidate irrespective of his political affiliatiton, we can see some good people in politics who will bring required change to society.

Government has made a law to give a vacation on poling day but we educated people plan our family get togethers or go to a movie on those days forgetting most important task of voting for better future of this country. India has all required human power and natural resources to be the best place on earth, these silly politicians making fun of our democracy and society..

Good People in politics???? Good Joke!!.On to-days date count how many good people are there in the politics. If you want to enter into politics you should have hundreds of goons around you.To achive this status and qualification you should have atleast murdred two persons and dozens of FIR's.Sincere and humble persons cannot enter into politics if they do they will perish before the elections.Hence these good people are serving the nation through charities etc..Regarding casting the votes in the present cenario we can only vote to the better political goon among the contenders. Why don't they introduce "No Vote" option in the electronic voting machines,so that we can have a better chance to bring good people into the politics.

The fault lies squarely with the silent majority that is not only committing the crime of remaining silent, but also committing a much bigger crime against themselves, the nation, the people of the country, the system and also the political health of the nation by largely abstaining from exercising their adult franchise.

All the years when the congress was having a clear working majority in the House, and was called the clear majority party, it only represented minorities, bicchde huwe and ticchde huwe, i.e. they had all been minority governments that ruled the nation and in the process ruined it.

Then came the era of cocktail governments, where goondas had to be accommodated as ministers as a compulsion be that an NDA government or an UPA government.

The silent majority has to rise above all the political orientation (largely poisonous) that it had had from Jawahar's time, think afresh,
think of the coming generations, think of a nation that handles the terrorism efficiently like Israel does, and exercise their adult franchise.

If the silent majority would not wake up, it would then be too late, because when it would do wake up, the flag hoisting on the Red Fort could be something else other than our tricolour.

And who would that be to be blamed ?

It would only be the silent majority that refrains from exercising its voting right, the most effective weapon to throw away the rotten elements from the political system.

Today those elements are multiplying each day

Well said rachita bholowalia / LALIT.

High time these 'leaders' realise that with their caste-based vote-banks they are not leaders but 'bleeders' of our Nation.

We need more people like you and Ravi A, here.

As an aside, how come an advocate like Ashok Pandey did not know that there was "no merit" in his petition, as the apex court had earlier decided on similar issues raised before it!?!?!

Mr Pandey must be a blushing 'look-face, don't-laugh' among his legal contemporaries, today. Serves him right.

But why blame Maya only? Sonia did the same thing . She regined from Rai Barelli seat and then recontested to become MP.

She forced Gujral govt to fall because of DMK involvement in Rajiv Gandhi assasination case and imposed ageneral election on country. Now she is sitting with same DMK!

Unfortunately, the so called intelligetia of the country abstain from casting their vote when it matters & than cry foul when such leaders get elected on strength of voters who exercise their right. Indian middle class is a classic example of I me & myself.

The minds of 'so-called intelligensia' are regulated by leftist an-chors, columnists etc.who make the educated class stay at home by propagating that if they vote for change from the present dispensation, they will be committing sin by being non-secular. There is need for a law that a candidate should make a choice by filing nomination from one constituency only, and should be prevented from resigning the elected by making advance deposit of the expenses incurred for conducting earlier and next bye-election. This will prevent seat hopping.
