Why!!
by nishant sangal on Jun 10, 2007 01:22 AM  Permalink

U will ban Orkut, people will start using something else...this is Internet age!! Instead of banning Orkut, first of all those shiv sainiks should be put behind bars for damaging the public property(in this case cybercafes). And I think 99% of Orkut users use it for staying in touch with their old friends and buddies, and not for those sick communities. So why make these 99% suffer bcos of that remaining 1% stupid users. Instead Gov can ask Orkut/Google to have some form of check, and get some mechanism to detect and delete these stupid communities.

Take the people's vote, not Shiv Sena's.
by Rasheed on Jun 09, 2007 09:21 PM  Permalink

Orkut has revolutionised relationships among people, particularly the young. Orkut communities were active in arranging tsumani relief and a lot of positives emanate from such groupings. Should the Shiv Sena or the government for that matter sit on judgment on matters of the net. Stop regulating the net, the only source of freedom for millions across the globe. Should ordinary men and women bend to these moral policemen so abjectly.

Is Shiv Sena justified in their actions
by R.Sinha on Jun 09, 2007 04:25 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Shiv sena should refrain from such cheap giimick of moral policing and the likes. It cannot speak up for Hindu community as such. Maybe they have forgotton a true incident from the life of their 'hero' Shivaji.
Brahmin priests across the lenght and breath of the country had refused to perform Raj Tilak (accession of power) ceremony for Shivaji just because he was a Maratha. Shivaji then resorted to kidnapping a group of priests from Varanasi, held them at knifepoint and got his Raj Tilak done.
So now, was Shivaji justified? Didnt he insult Hinduism? And should we refer to Shivaji as a Maratha hero or a Hindu icon ???? The answers are clear, but some blinds will deny this truth infact.
Let Shiv sena speak for Marathis only, and stop there only. They have got no right to speak for Hindus let alone India.

Thank You

Does orkut Monitor Content on orkut?
by mitanshu garg on Jun 09, 2007 11:13 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We do not actively review content that users post on orkut. As you can imagine, it would be nearly impossible keeping up with all the new photos, community posts, and changes to user profiles. Additionally, reviewing newly written posts, photos and profiles would dampen the organic growth essential to any social network.

We expect our users to be responsible for their actions on orkut and to treat other users with respect. When there is a breach of conduct, however, we rely on you to help us keep orkut safe by notifying us through the %u201Creport abuse%u201D button.

Does adult language violate orkut policy?
by mitanshu garg on Jun 09, 2007 11:11 AM  Permalink

We understand that certain profiles or communities may use language that contains profanity, sexually graphic content, or words that may be deemed inappropriate. orkut.com is a community for adults and we do not regard adult language as abuse. You can choose to leave communities that you find offensive, delete scraps that you don't approve of, or add offensive profiles to your "ignore list."

orkut.com does, however, have a strict policy against hate speech and threatening language. If you see discussions that involve racism or hatred, that instruct or encourage illegal activity, or that directly threaten violence to an individual or group, please use the "Report Abuse" page to flag these profiles or communities. We will investigate these reports and take appropriate action.

The answer is here -- no more 'Yes', 'No', 'May be so'

As very well put by Mak C on Jun 08, 2007 06:04

QUOTE.

Are we blind? The topic should have been 'Is Shiv Sena justified in their actions?' Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj will remain an icon of Maharashtra. His acts of glory and bravery in the face of strong opponents will be sung in the folklore, irrespective of Shiv Sena. Here the question is that of Shiv Sena experimenting with how far they can arm-twist the population, before a counter reaction brings law of the land back to the forefront...

Sometimes our government acts with surprising speed. Check:

Centre only to monitor Orkut content, no ban of site

In India Everything is Banned, yet |
by Biswajit Chakrabarty on Jun 09, 2007 07:51 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

In India Communalism is banned, but people who has banned it are the very people who instigates it.
NCERT books may teach that we should do away with casteism, yet the very authors don't hesitate to boast about their caste.
We have banned corruption, child marriage, drugs, nepotism, domestic violence etc etc yet we are not ASHAMED to be benefitted by these. In fact SHAME is a word not found in our dictionary. The only thing that should never be banned : oppurtunism. If it serves my purpose then I shall indulge in it, if it harms my narrow interest then I shall ban it. Good idea. Good idea to grow into a developed nation.
To hell with the so-called principled people.
Let ORKUT be banned, let some more things be banned because we are not matured enough. If somebody tells us and propagates that our head is full of cowdungs only, we should immediately get into action to stop him, otherwise we are afraid we and people like us will start believing that it is only cowdung which has filled the gaps in our mind.
Please ponder over the reasons why 'Da Vinci Code' need not be banned in developed 'Christian countries' but need to be banned in 'debt trapped', backward, underdeveloped, casteist and corrupt fundamentalist countries.

my father has given me a name and i am known by that name, only a casteist like you notices the surnames and think that like many other chakrabartys this fellow must also be concerned about his caste and caste interests. You ought to know more about a person before coming to a conclusion. India is now a days full of half-baked 'pundits' who don't care to differentiate between 'information' and 'knowledge'.
You must also been thinking that i am from bengal, no sir, i am not from bengal, I am from Assam. Now you must be thinking that I must be an Assamese. Again, sorry sir. You are wrong. In 'Tagore's language : how much do i know of this world!

There are more than 25 Indian social networking sites (sites like yaari.com, minglebox.com, bigadda.com etc) - we've reviewed almost all on our popular web technology blog www.watblog.com. On top of that there are sites like FaceBook, MySpace etc etc.....the Govt can't possibly go banning all these sites....there's going to be a huge backlash by the youth of this county

Consuming valuable time of the young stars
by surender rao on Jun 08, 2007 06:11 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Hi Friends! Let us think more rationally and practically. How many of us really using the internet facility for the productive purposes? In particular, How much time we are spending in orkuting and how productive has been the time we are forgoing? Just think!! You may say that you are refreshing or having fun to get fresh mind through orkut. Do we actually in the position to spend such valuable time for this.

I am not against in orkuting, but i am just trying to say you that accessibility of some needless facilities may lead to negative results. It is just like providing accessibility of cigars to the kids. I strongly feels that we don't need orkut.com which encourages the misuse of scarce sources. We have free mailing facilities from Yahoo, rediff, g.mail, hot mail so on and so forth.......just think

If somebody wants waste his time, there r plenty of ways of doing it. This includes posting on this site. In that case, the whole internet is prone for misuse. Can we ban the internet?

Ofcourse, there are plenty of ways in the internet to waste time. But we are not ready to accept a place like orkut which is in my view "an useless place to discuss useless things by some jobless people".

It seems like Google has no control over the orkut communities and not at monitoring them. If there is some control and moderation for each community, then its fine. But I don't think its practically possible.

Well said Mr.Surender. I completely agree with you. How may communities are there in orkut discussing about meaningful and informative subjects?

Last week I came accross a thread in an orkut community which says that if 5 posts are posted by guys, then guys would win and if girls then they win. The worst thing is the thread is still growing with more than 10,000 posts.

What is this...? Don't these people have any other job to do. I admit that, Social networking is a great concept, but its not taken in the right way.

I agree with you. Recent Pune rave-party is one example where hundrads of young kids involved in drug consumptions thru these social networking websites! None of these online social circle generates anything positive. Some young/old minds looking for cheap destructive entertainment.

Banning these may or may not help but the truth of the matter is they are only there like alcohol or drug as some one mentioned.
