As long as India is blessed with persons like MEDHA PATKAR, Indian rain water will keeping raining and going into sea, without utilisation.
She has done tremendous damage to Gujarat economy by stalling the project.

My dear friend, Medha Patkar never against human welfare. Wake up and read about her agitations. She is against to big projects, but not for small scale projects. Government always wants to build big projects, so that ruling party can eat good portion of the money. Before commenting again on Medha please do read her about with open mind.
Is there any technology available in the world for converting sea water into drinking water and if it is available in the world, is it avaiblable in India ?

It is very expensive to process sea water for fresh water generation. Technology is simple De-Salination of water but very very expensive for large scale processing like supplying water to a city. UAE is using this tech.

In Jamnagar, Reliance refinery is converting sea water to potable water by Flash Evaporation. It needs energy.
Reverse Osmosis is another technique, which uses membrane technology. Needs lots of pumping energy. Most of Middle east and offshore oil platform as well as ships use them to produce potable water. Ofcourse nothing to beat natural rain water where nature does the job.

I do agree that desalination process consumes lots of energy and is expensive, but we have to get our priorities right. India is blessed with a large coastline and we got to make use of that resource. We have money to spend on luxury goods but no one is willing to pay for water. Let us get our priorities right, we spend lot of money to drink mineral water, I am sure people will pay for desalinated water. it is just a question of working the economics out and setting a tariff that is affordable and ensuring that there are no leakages in the system(no T&D losses like power theft).
World has changed a lot in the past decade due to information revolution. So, industrialisation and better transportaion facilities are bound to reach the lesser and least developed regions. If this happens, they all are going to get rich. So, the rich nations today, has put forward the agenda of climate change as one of the wepons to force lesser developed countries to restrict industrialisation. Have to mention here, that this is not the only wepon they have. I agree that there are scintific evidences, but most of the researches are funded by the organisations who wants to get the evidence for a possible catastrophic climate change. I won't say that this is all purposeful, but there is a subconsious effort. If you look at the countries with highest per capita carbon emission (even avoiding the big bro US) they do very little to tackle it. Most of the western european countries have a very good public transportaion infrastructure. But usage is less due to high price, and if they brought legislation to slash these prices, they can reduce the per capita CO2 emission at least by half. But in any case, this is just a caveat, I leave this for you to think

I completely agree with you. In fact some thinkers have already predicted a few years back that the next world war will be for water.
In most of the cities in India people are buying drinking water and in many other smaller towns people have to spend lakhs of rupees to install deep bore well etc to have water supply. This is a serious issue and will become worse and a crisis in the coming years.
I have just been corrected that water meters have been in Hyderabad for years. Why aren't other states following suit? The Central Government must make it a rule for consumers to PAY PER USE when it comes to water consumption also.
This is very very important to conserve water. To create New Water Reservoirs in three corners of each village. To connect all the Water storages of each village and to connect to the nearest canals and then to Rivers. In theRiver to have the sufficient Storage by Constructing Check Dams in every 30KMS of River path. Back feeding facility to all these villages during summer and during the scarcity in villages. Providing the each family with 2 Acres for cultivation. Agricultural should be compulsory. Each village should have this much trees. Each factory should have the recycling and to use the water treated effectively. To make Natural fertiliser factory for every 25 villages. The Present Water resources increasing the depth and increasing the border height. Making the BIO gas Supply to these villages by using Cow Dung and the Bio Degradable materials. To use the Balancematerials as fertiliser.
This is very little what I have written.
This much if we do itself the fighting between the states for water will reduce. Then the Global warming will be nowhere due to more Oxygen. The Govt will have to decide on this issue immediately. The CM's so called Aritocrats must think that implementing within every state in India is in their hands. They will fight with other states only and not doing these things. This is Written in Tamil by a Poetess Avvayar who lived thousands of years before. Varappuyara Neer Uyarum - If we in
I am really amused when reading such articles. We are talking of discipline and conservation by the developed countries, and The Energy Research Institute in India advising the Indian government on these sensitive issues. I can only comment on the situation in our country.
Well, one can see daily , the gross misuse of water all around. Early morning, we witness buses, trucks and cars being washed with free flowing water. Furthermore, it is a common sight to see leaking taps and flushes in clubs, cinemas and other public places, though public toilets seldom have water, and always stink. Housewives too contribute substantially by washing courtyards with free flowing water, or pouring dozens of buckets of water to wash places that have little use. The extent of wastage is probably not known, but will be enormous. Our rivers have been polluted to the extent that they now resemble dirty drains. And responsible people appointed for manning such locations have absolutely no concern for saving any water. Seeing all this one would wonder where the shortage is.
Let us have responsive citizens everywhere, and talk about our duties, rather than talking about reservations and rights . I hope all concerned pay attention to this critical area before it is too late.

You mean, buses, trucks and cars should NOT be washed with water??? You mean housewives should use tissue paper to wipe clean the dishes??

Is this Rediff having guts to take to the concerned Minister and getting anything done.
This fellows meter will raise the rediff will earn money.
If the Rediff is having guts let them prove any of the articles any decision which are come in this type of discussions.

you seem to b an intelligent boarder, the crisis in Kashmir has less to do with Kashmiris but more to do with Pakistan, see the map of northern India, and see the rivers flowing inside Pakistan, now for a moment stop its flow and divert to India ... Pakistan is held ransom within 3 days, and after 1 month all that will be left of Pakistan will be a BIG desert. the war was on and will remain on in foreseeable future.
No further globalwarming,no further emission of green house gasses to check harmful consequences--water crisis, desertification, melting of ice in north and south pole regions etc. World to be saved by all ofcourse not without industrialzation for socio-economic development. Alternative sources of energy need to be encouraged,Gases emitted by thermal power may be avoided by putting in them in to a closed chamber. All ready emitted gasses may be tried to wipe outside by the gravitation by developing new technology.
