AND they want India to sell out ITS NATIONAL INTREST?
by apjunkmail on Oct 29, 2007 10:17 PM  Permalink

Sorry No Deal at all. India SHOULD want the same terms as the US-

China nuclear agreement even if it

takes significantly longer to

negotiate.
India cannot agree to Fissile Material

Cutoff Treaty objectives which is part

of NSG draft as it is a back door to

cap and roll back of Indian Nuke

weapons. Without Fissile Material

nukes weapons cannot be mantained or

when Fissile Material degradation in

the weapons takes place they cannot be

refreshed in future. Example like you have a car with half tank of petrol and you are cut off from ever puting more fuel. When you run out of that half tank thats it.

Compulsion of US
by Aftab on Jul 26, 2007 11:23 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

US can not afford an unfriendly relation with India.Pakistan can be their partner to fight Osama but if they need prosperity to continue they have to keep India in good humor. They know it very well that if they do not transfer the latet know how to India, they will be ultimately a loose as Indian scientist are capable enough to meet the technological requirements. They may take little longer time to do it. Example is denial of super computer to India which we have overcome.

India has not ventured in a full fledged manner in production of arms otherwise the gap that exoists today would not have happened.

It is better for USA not to show us their teeth. Their warm shake hand is always welcomed.

I agree with you on India-US being natural partners. But politics is politics. I don't think the current deal will go thru in the short term.

The natural course for this to happen is:

- India continues to make itself business friendly and builds its economy and becomes globally integrated

- India improves its governance framework and makes the institutions transparent (CORRUPTION IN INDIA COMES DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY)

- The education and research scene in India improves exponentially

- India develops its own technology

This is a very slow process. It will be atleast couple of decades before this happens.

To speed up this scenario, we need an improved ENERGY situation. Nuclear energy is the fastest and most abundant.

I am wondering how we are going to achieve this.

Nuke Deal
by Sharad on Jul 26, 2007 10:59 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

This so called deal is going to die a natural death. The US congress is not going act favorably. The Bush adminstration will be over in 2008. The Indian Parliament will come in the way. If Democrats win in 2008, there won't be any interest (there will be other priorities for them, like pull out from Iraq and dealing with the mess that will create).

Indian industry and citizens will continue to suffer from power shortage. It is same old story from 1947......

American interests is THE Priority
by Chakravarthy Muralidhar on Jul 26, 2007 10:10 AM  Permalink

As always any deal signed with the Americans must meet their security interests as well as business interests! While Hyde Act and other Acts and Decrees are holy cows, the Indian constitution, parliament, etc. can be circumvented and given the short shrift. That has been the American point of view and that our unelected, immorally and crudely (with concocted residential address in Assam) foisted PM remembers even in his sleep!

US can't compromise national interest? No problem, we can!

That is what a give-take partnership is.

Let us appreciate the US
by A G on Jul 26, 2007 09:38 AM  Permalink

Let us appreciate the boldness and the frankness with which the US officials issue statements. They are clear that the agreement has to be in US interests, it should prevent spread of nuclear weapons and help in better relationships which means billions of dollars worth of sales of equipment to india. On the other hand, our whimpish, unelected PM keeps misleading the public and would have signed a completely one-sided agreement long back if Dr Khadodkar had not intervened. No country can be strong if it does not build strong, internal and self confident institutions. We are strong in space because we stand on our own feet. This PM will drag us a few decades back.

sell out
by srini on Jul 26, 2007 09:33 AM  Permalink

Dr.M sarkar ne desh ko bhajdiya at the behest of italy. What is national interest for US may not be in our national interest. The US is known for its hegmonistic attitude. When dealing with such a partner , it is certain that the agreement is in one way only.
