Dy. PM has little or no voice.
by chanakya maurya on Feb 09, 2007 02:09 PM  Permalink

The Dy can be shown the door like Indira did to Morarji.

"Garibo ki suno" slogan has been very patently learnt by the real PM from her late saassu-ma.

Economic reforms is a continuous process that cannot be stopped.

However, in Bharat Varsh the politician and bureaucrats often ape the west without modifying the versions to suit our nation and its large portion living under appalling conditions.

All modifications are almost always in favor of those guys with cigars in their mouth and big money in their pockets that accommodate the highest authorities of any country that they want to penetrate into, whether it is trade, defence, or industry.

The real PM has rightly shone a red signal to the videshi as well as desi Wal Marts.

If this is done genuinely with a view to curbing the rising prices of the commodities that these giants would corner, it is in tune with "garibon ki suno" !

Reliance Fresh however has started offering Fresh at much lower prices. But this could be a take-off ploy. Once firmly riveted in the market, they, too, would follow Wal-Mart policies.

The same is applicable to shining the red light for the accelerated economic reforms that would create an infra-structure, towering heights and capacities, but the "aam-aadmi" will be a further down-trodden lot, though he may be made to feel deceitfully good.

Hire and fire would be the order of the day, with the "lean and mean" mantra.

Desi versions of the impending economic reforms need to be formulated for the common good of the common man.

We must not forget that even under controlled economy, ambanis and like have prospered.

At the end of the day, however, it might also seem that this is a political stunt in order to garner votes in the next general elections that are round the corner; and when this is imminent, everybody plays "garibki beli".

Once in power, the oppression of the mass begins mercilessly.

If madam really means business, she must take up the reins of power, occupy the PMO, rather than control it remotely.

She must also make a pledge to the people of India that no further Singurs will take place.

Well Soniya gandhi is right about her doubts for opening retail sector for walmart and other giants. We people who are accessing net here are fortunate people always demanding the best life style we can possibly have. But I have noted one thing Slowly and steadily by some supreme court ruling specially Sealing the lower class of our society is being sidelined.Like they cant have shops in house hold,No Thelas in delhi. One can always welcome the Rulings but whether supreme court has any plans to assist those people who are going to loose their earnings.
Some time i feel these ruling are just going to ease the entry of Retailers like walmart and others to operate easily in india just wait for the day when you have to walk 1KMs for a toffee for your crying kid.

This is sounding no better than encouraging unlawful activity... If a poor maid is raped by a neighbor, you don't support the culprit by forcing them into marriage and praising him for supporting the poor woman!
If people are starting commercial activity in residential premises by bribing the officialdom and political babus then the court is the only source of help for aam admi who has to bear with the probs. This is a rectification in the system but at the same time people should be provided options to resume there business in proper market locations. Do not blame system correction for political failure and system failure. It is the job of every individual to stick to the system else there are mechanisms to rectify the them... dont blame them the mechanisms trying to rectifuy the system else tommorow you nex gen would be living in chaos!

Unfortunate political behavior
by Sanjay Sodani on Feb 09, 2007 01:00 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Every body in this political arena are thinking about themselves or doing to gain more power. No body means no body even a single person is thinking about the country.

Present political leaders in power are driving to the country in such a direction in which middle, poor person and small business will not have any place. All agri land will be acquired in the name of large industries or SEZ's. Small retailers will be washed out by BIG Retail stores such as WAL MART. Now it is time to think at what cost we want economic reforms??? I am not against economic reforms but it should be in the larger interest of country and common peroson and should not drive to help in economic centralisation.

I do not agree that samme reatilsers will be washed out. I am in UK and with reatils giants like Tesco, morrisons ,sainsbury there are still a lot many small shops doing great. Some one has written that "just wait for the day when you have to walk 1KMs for a toffee for your crying kid."

This will never happen because there will always be our small shop around the corner. And with our popuation, these small reltail shops will never die.

I do not agree with Mr.Pandey.

Even I live in the UK. Precisely because of the many supermarket giants like Tesco, morrisons and Sainsbury's many small time retailers had to close their businesses. This was reported and discussed extensively in the BBC UK news and also prompted an investigation by the competition commission in the UK to look for any possible unhealthy competition practices being followed by the big supermarkets. One of the supermarkets for example used to buy prime land in cities and not use it, purely to avoid competitors from entering the market and competing with them.

Because of the big money power these supermarkets wield, they almost control the whole production market. For example the farmers will be forced to sell their products at a price the supermarkets will dictate.

Soon the same supermarkets will start importing food from across the world from wherever it is available at a cheaper price. This will have adverse impact on the local economy and also on the environment in terms of the green house gas emissions being generated during such unnecessary transport.

All these things are happening for real in countries like UK. Majority of the fruits and vegetables being sold in the UK are sourced from outside the country. The power of the supermarkets is such that they can dictate what crop the farmer should grow in countries as far away from UK as African and south american countries.

Because of such malpractices coming into light, now there is a new range of produts called fair trade products which in a nut shell means that they are grown and bought in a very ethical way, without wielding the supermarket power.

The day is not going to be far from reality in India too when such things would happen and we too will have to set up the so called "competition commissions" and we will also start looking for "fair trade" products.

To me the very existence of a product line called "fair trade" means to say that fair trade in reality is hard to find and therefore it has to be specially labelled like that!

Is this the last of economic reforms for a long time?
by Bhuvanesh Obla on Feb 09, 2007 12:49 PM  Permalink

If Congress wins Punjab, Sonia will be more powerful, eventhough the triumph is due to Dr.Manmohan Singh. If it does not win, then it proves automatically that Dr.Manmohan Singh can not win elections. So in both the cases, Dr.Manmohan Singh will be a scapegoat. And his days are numbered as economists can not work alongwith politicians. So I don't think India is going to have anymore economic reforms once Dr.Manmohan Singh and Dr.Chidambaram are not there in the cabinet.

Hope not.....
by bharat on Feb 09, 2007 12:45 PM  Permalink

It will be a great tragedy if the reforms are dropped or slowed down for political considerations. I hope the the PM and FM can muster enough strength to prevent their party from this dangerous move.
