I resided near his house in Delhi, Mukherji Nagar. He used to watch my brother's cricket session every evening, and frequently would make calls to Kashmir from a nearby public booth. Same was with Geelani, and in fact he was seen to be having anti india views and for this he was quiet popular in Mansarovar hostel of Delhi University. Afzal was not caught blindedly. The day I saw many policemen in plain cloths near his house at a time when he had escaped to kashmir and his wife, Afsan, was at home (pregnent too). after some hourrs we neighbours found police thrashing her badly. I felt bad then one neighbour told that plain clothed policemen first came to her house as a gas checking agents and had fitted a microphone and sound recording device. As soon as they left, she talked to Afzal at kashmir and that talk had reference to parliament attack and both afsan wa planning to abscond. This way police got the confirmation and nabbed both of them. I have been close observer of that day episode as well Geelani's image in mansarovar hostel. They are not innocent this is well known fact. They r antinational. Anyway parliament attack was not a big crime..because bigger criminals visit it daily.
Dear Observer bhai, True fake encounters happened in kashmir but they happen in almost all parts of India. They donot happen because the system is anti kashmiri but because the system is corrupt. Having said that we must also accept that this system is better than what our neighabours have: Here guilty policeman or any other are being investigated whereas in pakistan -- their president (musharaff) was shielding army officer who raped Dr. Shazia. No one in even investigating the killing of thousands of baloch or shia people. Fake encounter happen in punjab, up, bihar, etc. There is not one state where fake encounters do not take place. So fake encounters cannot be a reason to be antiIndia. It can be a reason to be anti system. The method to improve the system is democracy and guns have no place.
Now regarding Afzal guru. I agree he didnot have a lawyer in lower court, but HE HAD A LAWYER IN HIGH (not of his own choice) AND SUPREME COURT (of his own choice). Now consider this: 1. Calls were made from his phone to the phone carried by on of the terrorists who attacked parliament which was recovered after they were killed. 2. THe car used was purchased by him only few days before the incident (Car was registered in his name). 3. Supreme court acquited all the rest of accused.
Afzal is not innocent. The question is whether he should be hanged, well I guess this is for the courts to decide. THe case falls in rare of the rarest category as parliament is sacred temple of democracy (Even though it shelters criminals). So afzal should be killed. Now the delay is because of home minister and UPA government and HH APJ Kalam has no role to play so people like thackrey should speak against congress and UPA and not HH APJ Kalam. We must ignore people who speak against HH APJ Kalam.
a passing thought: Look around you and if anyone can find a better person, a more capable person in entire world politics than our HH APJ Kalam i shall give 10,000 rs. But you will have to prove that.

Mr Shiekh People have absolutely no doubt about the credentials of our president. The problem is that our good leaders, at some time of their tenure need to take very bold decisions. But people who are intellectuals at heart like Dr.Kalam or Dr.Singh may not be capable of taking it. That is the argument. We have the biggest example in our country of such a person right ? Gandhiji helped us with his ideals of satyagraha and non-cooperation movement to get independence. However when communal violence in support of partition started he couldnt take it anymore. Which led to him nod at the proposal to partition the country based on religious differences. The fact remains that all of us are human beings and we have our strengths and weaknesses. We expect our leaders to be strong and with a lot of integrity. "If it gotta be done it gotta be done" . I have met Dr.Kalam and have idolised him since my early engineering days. He is a saint at heart and thats what is scary when such people enter Indian politics.

Very insightful comment, but I being a Kashmiri dont consider myself an Indian like all the Kashmiris including Pundits we beileve India is occupying Kashmir , and every freedom fighter of Kashmir is a terrorist for the Indian Army and Indian Army is terrorist for us becuase the mass human rights violations they have commited on bot Muslims and Hindus and Sikhs in Kashmir is just something that is beyond description.
As far as Afzal is conerned he wroked for STF , he later torutured by STF and made to confess and not only that he was denied a lawyer, no man can be convicted becuase you think YOU HAVE EXCELLENT QuALIFICATIONS LIKE BARHMIN HINDI NORTH INDIAN etc, nobody can be hanged becuase SOMEHOW YOU WANT IT , be a responsible citizen of your country you conviction that Afzal should be hanged makes me doubt how much you can about yoru countrymen eave Kashmir alone.

Tell Thackray first that after passing 5 years or more with parched career of Shiv Sena, that too in Mumbai, he got this small success and opening his mouth too big on just a small occasion. Commenting anything over Kalam, forget president of India position, needs head morale and almost same kind of stature..and I think Thackrey over estimated his stature as usual. They think only themselves that they represent Hindus..but we don't think so. Thackrey as a Hindu has given nothing to this country but Kalam as a muslim has given India it's self reliance as a nuclear country, missiles and enhanced boost up to country's science tech and made India enough to beat Pakistan and remove it's trace from earth even. Millions of muslims work for our country in Army, medicines, scinetist due to whom country is progressing and at least Thackrey has no known credit in this progress. It's not Islam but community of terrorism whose big part comes from Islamic networks and fanaticism which is responsible. Afzal Guru has done wrong but president is not as cruel as Thackrey as he has got heart and head, both superior than Thackrey. He has to think manytimes before getting the responsibility of killing Afzal, a father of new born child, and helpless family behind him. Same time yes..in this country it has become fashion to plead for terrorists on the name of human rights. Such social activists are social agents of these terrorists and Thackrey should take care of those instead of accusing Kalam. In law there should not be any forgiving to any person involved in antinational act and those pleading for him should also be put into RI, like these communist NGOs who are no less than anti national. But please, don't divide country on language, regions, religion and cast. We don't need Thackrey. He still needs to establish himself.

That IS the million dollar question. IF Afzal did it or was he framed. Innocent till proven guilty? Is he really guilty? Would you take the life of a man if you were not sure? If he did turn out to be innocent, could you bring it back? These questions maybe what are troubling our president and mind you, at a much more magnified level than casual commentators like you and me. I do not know if Afzal did it or not. But I do deeply appreciate the strength of our president's conscience. I am glad i live in a country that respects due process and justice so much.

Dear Mr. Agnes, I have had the opportunity to observe people's comments here on rediff for sometime now. I couldnt believe what I saw. Where I come from, I have never seen or heard hatred like this. I didnt not know there were so many ways in which people could find excuses to hate each other. And there are people who know how to use this hatred for their benefit. I pray to god what i see here in rediff is a bad sample of really screwed up people. i shudder to think what if this is representative of my whole country. I think it is not, for I have many different kinds of friends and I have never ever come across anything like this before. I will go one step beyond what you said Mr. Agnes. one doesnt have to beat one's chest about being patriotic. one doesnt have to hate someone else to show love to something. if love is true, then it is also independent. it doesnt need excuses and definitely does not need hatred. patriotism IS the last resort of the scoundrel. The true soul of India is made for far more brilliant things. truth, knowledge, music, art, literature, debate, philosophy..the list is endless. it is definitely not the place for a people with their minds and reason taken out, willingly led by any nonsense anyone says.
I pray, that every honest man/woman in this country, whoever it be, whatever religion, whatever region, language, caste etc can go to sleep peacefully every night without having to worry who's hatred is upon them. I pray that this country is strong enough to give that security and peace of mind to its people. Last but not the least, I pray for some sense of individuality, reason and dignity for people, that they have the sense to judge every other man or woman that passes them by the merit of their individuality. And i strongly believe Mr. Kalam is a man with that kind of strong conscience. A man cannot be tried and executed based on shaky facts, a man cannot be punished based on public opinion (and definitely not a screwed up one like this).

Thackeray's remarks on APJAbdul Kalam are the result of his high degree of patriotism. The important fact is that the UPA is postponing the execution of the terrorist Afzal Mohammad and trying to persue its policy of divide and rule to perpetuate its power. Let the UPA take referendum on the issue. This also needs to look into the question raised by the first President of India Dr Rajendra Prasad during Jawaharlal Nehru's dictatorship. President need not be bound by Cabinet's decisions in all matters and must have the power to take some decisions against those of the govt in nation's interest. Otherwise what is the necessity of the President's post in the Constitution?

It would not be a democracy if a president is given veto powers over a democratically elected government. Where was Thakerays patriotism when he chased away North as as well as South Indians from his state. When nationalism is becomes so limited, it is called facism. Thakeray is a facist, not a nationalist, there a big difference. What Kalam has is patriotism, read his books and contrast it with Thakeray.
