Can Democracy be an objective ?
by ashwani arora on Dec 19, 2007 07:05 PM  Permalink

Democracy is just a system of governance. And it has worked, wheresoevr adopted meaningfully.Same is true for dictatorship or autocracy.Wheresoever balanced is achieved, life line is longer. And that is probably an answerto all threats posed by dictatorial trends all around.Democratic practices in India have had tremendous impact on Pakistan.Though the command remains with dictators but they too have started posing as democrats.Same is true in India too.But -interesting enough-people of India have tasted value of democracy. Some must have been disappointed, but it seems, literacy and orientation at various levels will drive all to participate.Transperancy will be a key element in times to come.A sincere effort by Legislative bodies,an active Media with mass support will mature Indian democracy. Most communities, minorities, caste based or religion based have started gauging unfair practices of democracy. In times to come-Key Result Areas will be Performance,Welfare,Security,Law and Order and contribution for setting up democratic values.
Of course -all this will happen with evolution of responsibility at Unit Level, individual level.
Hats off to Dr.Diamond for his analysis and Sri Sri for his comments

India is not a democracy
by Prof R K Gupta-India on Dec 19, 2007 06:56 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I think this american philospher does not have much idea about democracy.Democracy in theory has no meaning as democracy first of all needs character and integrity of people and then patriotism.Majority of Indians are fools and impoverished. They are bitten by caste, religion and community bugs. Most Indians are dishonest and tolerant to injustice. In facts if given a chance, any indian would cheat. As small percentage has self esteem and power of character, they are running this society on their crutches. But how long? Most of IAS and IPS type officers are idiots with dishonesty, arrogance, favoritism and manipulation their only virtues and what they learn in 40 years of service. In fact they are obstacles to industry, business and development.Same applies to our rotten and unaccountable judiciary.Indian has no 'cracy'. It is at best a mobocracy.People can't vote freely and dont know how to vote.Voting is a fraud exercise in India where only scoundrels and criminals are elected.A criminal is not only one who stabs someone.A criminal is also the dishonest bureaucrat and politician. The moment thry get inot job/power they start behaving as maharaja and hungry wolves with insatiable desire.Indians don't know about and don't deserve democracy.Average Indian citizen is poor, helpless and harassed and dies every day of humiliation and indignation suffered at hands of police, babus, judges, criminals and politicians nexus.Drastic reforms are needed. And a new constitution. Start cleansing ASAP.

Dear Prof. R K Gupta.
In Your first sentence 'I think this american philospher does not have much idea about democracy.' I believe you meant '....Indian Democracy.'

What ever you have writtn is true but how an American Professor can tell al this? He is modest in telling. He is aware if he tells whatever you have said, he would have to face stones and bricks.

Dear Professor,
You are trying to call yourself fool. If the people are bitten by caste and religion then what you are doing. You are calling yourself dishonest and tolerant to injustice. You are self declared cheater. you dont how to vote in an election or you have ever voted in an election as if only scoundrels and criminals vote. Dont tell others to cleansing, you should try yourself for drastic reforms.
dont forget that before telling these things you are also an indian. You have made above statement in frustation and has not used your brain/

Cleanig of Civil services should be first step. Actually the IAS, IPS lobby and Babus of Indian syatem make more harm then the polititains. In fact the criminal lot gets entry to Parliaments just because of thes epeople. A common and poor person doesn't get solution form these officials. They not even respond properly or talk with common man, they are rude and always there not to take responsibility. So a person cheated and not supported by them falls easily in lap of the DON polititian who at least listen to them and promise to solve the problem And quite surprisingly he helps at least 3-4 out of 10 where as it is "0" with IAS, IPS, babus. These big clerks and their chamchas in turn sit comfortabley under the DON & Corrupt politiatian becuase the NETA want their help to bail himself out. SO THERE IS A CLOUT OF NETA AND BEAUREUCRATS...CLEAN AND MAKE THIS LOBBY HONEST MOST OF THE PROBLEM SOLVED IN INDIA....BUT THIS IS PRACTICALLY IMMPOSSIBLE....BECASUE MAJORITY OF INDIAN PARENTS WANT THEIR SIBLINGS IN CORRUPT GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL SEATS.....

Alampallam Iyer,

Ur observation about Christianity is horrible and untrue it smells rather of hatred and Jealousy rather than any sound reason or logic.

The term Hindu and India was coined by the British who i am sure were christians and not pagans.
Democracy and secularism are Christian concepts based upon the Holy Bible...entire christian nations on earth are democractic and secular...the constitution of india was totally based upon christian nations constitution ie the West....now the basis of indias democracy and secularism is this constitution which is based upon the Christian west...this is clear logical proof that Democracy and Secularism is not based upon Hinduism...so I have proved u to be an liar both in and out...

About Democracy let me speak a few words..if hindus have made india secular and democractic then why doesnt hinduism rid itself of the CASTE BASED outlook ...can u give an low caste hindu..a fellow indian an sudra acess to ur prayer room or kitchen..think about this..castism is worse than racism..u treat ur own people worse than animals just because they are black and are from caste and varnas lower to urs...
Christians have given a new life to the hindus who are under the yoke of suppression and discrimination..infact christianity offers hop and reason to live as an human with full diginity to an low caste hindu..is this wrong..u can find an christian far far happier and prosperous than ur fellow hindu..a christian has more national pride and

Know Jesus and help urself and ur family..this is good for the nation and ur soul....

India is a great ,vibrant and dynamic democracy and would be realised 20 years hence. Because there are many areas of improvement which is already realised and implementation is in process. But this can be done within 10 years provided the people of india will have the regard for her mother country. But 2day nobody had even a scant regard for the country because we have inherited a system where everything is manageable even though there is a large scale corruption, muscle power and other evils.

I liked your views Alampallam Iyer. But it still remains a fact that no matter what system we had in place like Vaishali, NARAYAN SECT, VEERA SHAIVISM, SIKHISM, BUDDHISM, Christianity, Islam the Hindus in India are still discriminated based on caste system. Even if a person doesnt want to be part of any religion, he is still tagged to a particular caste because they know your ancestors. I believe Christianity, Islam, Buddism brought that comfortable feel to many that they are treated as one if they are part of that group. Thats why people like Ambedkar and many other dalits choose Buddism or Christanity to get deliverism from this stain of Hinduism. I am sure they would have liked to opt for atheism but our country is not mature yet to digest the idea of atheism.

Dont expect Miracles to happen overnight... We are just 60 year old country, unifcation of various fragments and believes.... In fact the so called USA took almost 250 years to reach stability.... India will become a strong nation, it willl take time... But ofcoourse there is no room for Commos, Monarchy or Autocratic rule here... We haev no option than exelling in Democratic way..... At the same time, China will certainly collapse because of its communist agenda... Communism cannot survive in a country with 1.5 billion population....

Mark my word, we will victorious... Then u guyz will be nowhere near to us... We have just stared opning our eyes, we have not yet started walking.... We have realized, to succeed we have to keep aside our petty issues... Insha Allah, we will be a proud nation very soon.

Democracy of illiterates

The author has hit the nail on its head. For democracy to thrive all the major institutions like judiciary, education etc should work flawless. India is deteriorating. How can people make a sound judgement when they can not even read and write? No wonder all the bad guys are elected.Educated intelligent people have no say.

"No wonder all the bad guys are elected" .
One major reason is, the so called creamy and literate layer of the society hardly participate in choosing who should rule them.Obvisouly, If empty mind is the resident of devil then the empty spaces created by educated people feeds the evil thoughts of all this Mafias/Gundas/Dada's .oops, I'm sorry I mean our honourable 'politicians' . Indi'a average polling rate is less the 50% out of which more then50% votes were bogus.Obivoulsy the righter pointed out our deficit .We produly call ourselves as 'secular'/democracy. Where is the transparency ? Where is the Secular, we still follow 'caste' system for education, whilst cou try like China, trying to bring 'talent' based system. We will remain as develping nation.Probably it's a myth looming around because of IT boom. One more 'recession' age, will show where we stand in the global arena.
Just because our GDP is over 7% doesn't qualify us to be a superpower.Calculate PerCapitaIncome .We are par less than others.Look at our corruption, we are par high than others.Still more than 50% less than poverty line. All the "India shining","Incredible India" is nothing but sales pitch and give a mirage like hope.

Long way to go dudes!!

Jai Hind...

Corruption
by BALKRISHAN KHANDELWAL on Dec 19, 2007 06:29 PM  Permalink

I agree with Mr. Diamond view that in our country buggest problem is corruption. His idea of autonoumus corruption is welcome. Also our judisial system require thourough cleaning up. Justice should be quick. For every type of case there should be time limit. Maximum five years. We have to follow the path of Gandhiji. In Rural area godd infrastructure should be built. Cottage industry should be develop. All village must be self suffucuent. Good education and health facility should be built. Every vilage should have linked road to nearby city.
