India in peril
by on Dec 24, 2007 11:42 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am trying to present a view which might be disturbing to lot of people here on the board but its true. First of all this is not a true democracy, people here vote for politicians and not for an agenda. Politicians are self serving and corrupted in this country whether it is at national level or state level. People are to be blamed and not the circumstances. As some of them pointed out a lot of discipline needs to be there if India wants to be a top nation.

I hate when people compare India with U.S or china citing the number of years as an excuse. We need to place our bets rightly on education, health care and infrastructure. We build huge buildings and then we complain there are no roads, to me that is just silly and stupid. It just shows that we no nothing about organizing and planning, no sense of following traffic rules.

We keep complaining about racism around the world but we ourselves practice that in several forms of caste, color, etc. We have so much divisive politics in this country that it is hard to get anything accomplished in this country. You can divide India horizontally based on north and south and exploit people or you can divide India vertically based on upper and lower caste and exploit people. You can do whatever the hell you want.

Please do not say cheezy movie dialogues like we are stil India inspite of all these differences, that only makes me wanna puke as I know we can do better than that.

Maybe this country will work more appropriately if we forg

India is a 'democracy' and NOT 'meritocracy' like Singapore.
by m on Dec 22, 2007 11:00 AM  Permalink

Hence it is imperative to appreciate 'diversity' in Government (Legislature,Judiciary,Administration) and Private
institutions (Reliance, Infosys etc) in order to prevent 'casteism' and socio-economic 'collusion' in India

1. 50% of Judges should be from OBC.
2. 35% Judges should be Dalits and Tribals.
3. Remaining Judges should be from other castes.

Otherwise India might disintegrate into 500 independent states as in pre-BristishRaj.

The current status is:

Kerala - C/o Gulf
Tamilnadu - No Comments
Andhra Pradesh - Telangana movement
Karnataka - Ask Tamilnadu
Bihar,UP - Their weapons are sophisticated than Indian Army's
Bengal - No comments. Chinese will listen.
Seven sister states - Instant death if you are non-assamese.
Punjab - Khalistan
Kashmir - Kidding?
Rajasthan - You are "paradesi" for them.
Maharastra - Ask Biharis in Mumbai.
...

Political reforms needed
by Dheeraj Akula on Dec 20, 2007 11:44 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Political reforms are needed.

A country of this size must have very rigid rules.

Absolutely no discrimination on the basis of religion and caste.

Uniform Civil Code is mandatory, as suggested by the Supreme Court.

We don't need any political parties. ALL political parties must be derecognized. Only independents must be elected to Parliament and Legislative assemblies.

We don't need ministers. Instead, let there be ministerial committees. For example, instead of having single a Finance Minister, let the Finance portfolio be managed by a group of ten or more politicians and bureaucrats. And all decisions by this committes must be put to vote in the Parliament.

Democracy is over rated
by swamy on Dec 20, 2007 03:02 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

A diverse country can never succeed in a democratic set up, that too a parliamentary democracy. Its so easy to divide people based on three aspects : caste, religion and region. This produces leaders of communities/regions etc who will essentially become over powerful. Thats exactly what has happened in India.

We have not reached even a quarter of our potential. If india had a strong dictator like Sardar Patel or even Modi ( though i hate his divisive politics), we would have been a developed country

Divisive politics are practised by Congress, not by Modi.

BJP and Modi have always been opposing divisive politics.

The latest example is allocation of 15% funds for "minorities" in eleventh five year plan by Congress. Modi and other BJP Chief Ministers opposed it.

Wake up!

I agree it is divisive politics.

But, do you agree that minority appeasement by Congress is also divisive politics?

Though Indian democracy is the best example of 'how a democracy should not be', still we should stick to it and try to improve it by bringing in new, young deserving politicians well educated and with right vision. There should be some conditions on eligibility for a person to stand for elections. Age and education has to be the first ones followed by character !

Is India democracy??
by Vaibhav Pradhan on Dec 20, 2007 12:32 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Is India democracy? We will have to change the definition of democracy if India is to call a democracy!

We had maharajas and now those maharajs conveniently converted themselves into MP's. So now we have these FAMILIES
Gandhi
Scindia
Pilot
Devra
Lalu Prasad
Sharad Pawar
Karunanidhi
Karunakaran
et etc etc etc etc

So, is this democracy?? Our PM says Rahul is future of India. Is this a democracy? Who is PM to decide that??

INDIA as it is now is a SHAM democracy. People have no voice whatsoever otherwise why do we have Sardar Sarovar, Nandigram, Chipco, SEZ etc etc. If people have voice in the process I don't think we will have these kind of issues. So, its not a democracy. But do we need westerner to tell us that???? Can't we figure that out on our own?

Uhm, Democracy means the rule of *Majority*. Doesn't mean everyone is happy - that's impossible. If the majority decide something, the minority has to put up with it - that's how it works. So, people elected by the majority take a decision in the name of the majority. (Unfortunately, India doesn't have the recall system like the US where a nonperforming or inept CM can be removed from office by people voting to recall him. As of now, it's only the MLAs who can do that, and MLAs cannot be recalled).
Every democracy has friction between majority and minority opinions. I'm not defending Nandigram, btw, but just saying that disagreements are bound to happen and as long as they are handled in a civil manner, taking into account the greater common good and the good of the people impacted by this, it is all fine.
