My deepest condolences to Minal's family during this time of grief. I pray you find strength to go thru this trying time.

Rediff -
You ought to apologize to your readers for your post yesterday! You reported no Indian students were killed, based on whatever unreliable source provided you with that info!

Please check your facts and behave as a reputed news organization!

World seem'd to say `you are a part of our lives'
and life suddenly seem'd precious and rare.....

But the soul questioned
`is it true'? Will it last?
It thought hard, doubted much
prayed for the truth to dawn
but again......silence.......

may those soul rest in peace..

what is wrong with America?
by BlackHawk on Apr 18, 2007 03:23 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

My thoughts.....
This incident is sadly the picture of what ails America. It is well known that many asian americans in the big cities end up as gang members participating in violent gang activities. Some of the reasons attributed to this is, a lack of identity(unable to identify or "belong" to a peer group) amongst young asian americans, social isolation based on their race. Indian americans are also included amongst asian americans. It comes as somewhat of a shock to me that an asian was responsible for this incident. In the past, I believe such crimes are commited by mainstream american ethnic or religious groups. Eg. Whites, African Americans, Muslims, etc. The investigations into this incident will most likely reveal the difficulties that asians go through in American society. Also, the USA is a hotbed for crime, and probably has the highest crime rates amongst developed nations.

My condolences to the family of the victims.

This incident that occured was isolated
#1) the kid was nuts mentaly and part of no gang
2) gang violence is controlled in at least most parts of america and only poor places have a big gang scene
3) Indians rnt amongst asian americans...we got out own groups down here

You have obviously never been to the US. In American English "Asian" means someone from far east asia, someone for the lack of a better word with Far-East Asian features. Middle easterners are called just that middle-easterners (or Arabs), Indians (from India) are called East Indian or Indian not Asian (even though India is in Asia).

Secondly if you are going to racial profile gangs in the US then the African American community and the Hispanic groups are over-represented in gangs (and are under-represented in higher education, white collar and executive roles in corporate America and generally are in the bottom of the socio-economic ladder).

Asian Americans on the other hand are over-represented in Academia (both as students and faculty) and usually do much better than the majority Caucasian American. Yes Asian gangs do exist but so do white, black and hispanic gangs.

Lastly the Asian kid was mentally deranged. If you are going to racially profile mass-murderers then the average serial killer/mass murderer in the US is a 30 something white male.

Stop being another Ignorant Indian who lives in a 3rd world country and thinks he has it better because of some school shooting in the US. You are so low as to think you have it better because of a few high profile murders in the US. Who is counting the dead bodies in the Bombay Blasts of the 90's and last year?

3rd World country, indeed! I'm proud of you, oh patriotic fellow Indian. Don't you have the humanity to think of the families of the dead in the Bombay Blasts before bandying their names about. Your ignorance and arrogance are so intolerable you probably fit right into America.

(No, I don't live in a '3rd world country', but in a far more civilised '1st world country' where people don't walk around firing Glocks into each other! Being in the 3rd World or 1st World makes no difference to what the Yanks call the 'Second Amendment'. Bah!)

And as for India being a third-world country, remember this quote from Adam Smith - 'The Wealth of Nations is built on the poverty of others' - so now, let's ask ourselves, why is America rich? Because of a history of genocide and discrimination!!!! Even the much revilled Brits had more of a conscience than the Americans.

Arrogance? You seem to have way way more arrogance (about what, I fail to gather) than the poster to whom you replied. He called a spade a spade... we are NOT a first world country... maybe your ivory tower is, but not the stuff outside it.

It is not unpatriotic to criticize your own country. That is OK for a dictatorship or theocracy but not a democracy. The whole point of free speech is to protect all voices, no matter how much they disagree with yours (Voltaire).

Inasmuchas the glocks are concerned, well we dont fire glocks. Our people use RDX. Clearly, we are far more advanced. Insofaras the glocks were concerned, didnt you have the "humanity" to consider the people shot by a mentally ill man?

What "genocide" has US been involved in? Iraq war is not a genocide... call it what you want -illegal, immoral, etc and all that is valid, but not a genocide. Most people are dying in Iraq at the hands of insurgents who plant IEDs. The initial bombing of Iraq cost a few civilian lives, but since then, the "genocide", if any has been by the locals. Hitler's extermination of jews is a genocide... The gujrat riots was a genocide, so were the sikh riots (Yeah, forgot about that, didnt you?)

What discrimination are you talking about? Brits are 100% more racist than americans. Of the industrialized west, America has least racism today. Yes, they've had a history of slavery in the past, but we've had the caste system.

My point? Dont go holier than thou on others. You are in as much of rubbish as they are, perhaps more so.

While it is true that the asian kid was mentally deranged, the question about what exactly made him take such a drastic step will haunt investigations into this incident.
I have to admit my comments seem politically motivated and insensitive to those that lost near and dear one in this tragedy. My sincere apologies.
