Mr Himanshu,Agreed with your observations.
by ASHOK on Apr 22, 2007 08:02 PM  Permalink

Your observation are agreeable. Water requirement will be there and it will be substantial. Consider this > IOC Gujrat Refinery and IPCL Baroda Petrochemical unit ( Now Reliance) Both Lift water which should be available to Baroda City. Baroda City gets Corporation water for 30 minutes only.
But Govt has done nothing to limit water consumption of these two massive units. Both units could have gone for water conservation and improved water utilization schemes. I am sure same is the situation at many other places in India. I think we have to wake up at City level and make these units work at part with world standards as Govt of India or State Govt is doing nothing. We have no Benchmarks limiting their water consumption.

Serious Problems arising from Mega SEZs
by konanur s krishnamurthy on Apr 19, 2007 04:10 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The article on SEZs from Himansu Thakkar is well argued. I strongly recommend its circulation through dailes and magazines in all Indian Languages. Inbrief., they are.1.Acute water shortage to the local residents. 1. Pollution caused by effluents.3.Mining of water from borewells will suck all water from deep sources. May create deserts later on. 4. Land acquisition problems leading to relocation and rehabilitation of poor land owners. 5. Long term litigations. If SEZs are created on totally uninhabited lands and new suburbs with both social and physical infrastructure are created, the problems will be controllable, It will also improve rural economy and generate lot of employment. Finally, government should seriously consider loss of lakhs of crores of rupees by taxes. Undesitable segments of rich society will make more money; government will lose revenue and impose fresh taxes on the lower and middle income people. India has world class economists in Dr. C.Rangarajan, Dr. Bimal Jain, Dr. Y.V. Reddy, Dr. Rakesh Mohan, Planning Commission Chairman Alhuwalia and host of others. Why can't the government ascertain their views?

Stupid Article !
by vijay on Apr 18, 2007 02:34 PM  Permalink

I think i author should be anti-india guy.

" For project which will boost Indian economy and by that Indians life style, if more important than this water problem"

If you say lack of water resources due to this project then we need to plan how to develop our water management system.

There a analysis called "SWOT" analysis , if you see as per that SEZ have many strengths and also few threats and weakness. But its not mean due to one threat the whole project is useless.

I strongly advice autor to go to school and study well first to understand how to study project!!

SEZ are needed. more water is wasted in villages than in SEZ
by V S on Apr 18, 2007 12:30 PM  Permalink

I can't believe author is painting negative picture of SEZ's which will boost our economy .

The obsession with remaining an agri based economy is backward and needs to change so we can move into the industrial age.

That can happen only with SEZ's

Well said Mr. Himanshu. In the mad rush for our share of pie in the so-called 'development' via "SEZ", We are forgetting that we are placing ourselves in a precarious situation of a "WATER-WAR". when farmers couldn have enough water to produce food, do we need to create this foriengn territories within our mother India and give all our water?

When our own brothers don't have enough water to even drink in rural places, do we need to drink COKE?

Save farmers - save India!

Water saving tips.
Urinals should be made of non-water items, -> saves 4 lakhs gallons of water per toilet.

Napkins should be made of re-usable towels or Hand Dryers -> save millions of trees.
