Public opinion is from the heart and not from the head
by Nagesh Pai on Jun 07, 2007 10:08 PM  Permalink

I think most of the opinions out here are straight from the heart full of emotions, devoid of any intellectual judgement.

Maybe Dr. kalam is a nice goodie goodie gentleman, with great resume of accomplishments as a scientist, great ideals, great haircut etc etc...

He has failed miserably on the main litmus test of his authority and leadership..

1. He is still sitting on the death sentence of mohd afzal guru... no decision.. is this any sign of leadership?

2. During the anti-reservation protests, where young enterprising students were protesting the divide and rule policy of the govt. All he had to tell the students was.. "please end the strike and go back to your classrooms"

Thanks to the fact that the Supreme Court woke up.

Its amusing to see people voting for Dr. kalam just because he is a nice man.. just like people in mumbai voted for GOvinda, just because he could dance well with his pelvic jhatkaas.

Advocacy for Dr.Kalam's second innings
by on May 30, 2007 10:36 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Most unfortunately, Dr.Kalam failed as a President of this country by showing a soft corner towards parliament attackers like Md.Afzal. Contrary, he had shown no mercy at all to Mr.Dhananjay Chhattarjee who spent 14 long yeras in jail for committing rape and murder of a school going girl. dr. Kalam definately applied two different yardstics to Dhananjay chhatterjee and Md.Afzal. We are severely pained with that actions of this incumbent president. He desrves no second innings and infact first term itself is a bonus for his life with which he should contended with. We strongly feel Kalam deserves no second term.

How can you judge a person by a single instance????? There are 100s of politicians how are involved in terrorist activities but "WE" the people of INDIA still fail to protest against them to be in politics or to roam freely.

I think one should look at those problems rather that criticizing a person like Dr. Kalam.

By not taking any decision on mohd gurus death sentence, Dr. kalam is proving one of the three things. He is working hand in glove with the govt to keep the terrorist alive.

or .. He is being a puppet in the italian senoritas hands..

third... He is being plain lazy in passing the judgement.

In all three cases.. he doesnt deserve to be the president of the country.

Even during the anti-reservation protests when students were vouching for meritocracy and preventing the nation from being divided on basis of caste, our grandpa Kalam only had to say ... "go back to your classrooms" to the students.

We have ample Grandfathers who write good stories and sing great lullabies.

Pal check what the constitution says on this issue. The hands of the president are tied by the decision of the government. Once the cabinet has taken a decision, the only power the president has is to send it for review along with his recommendations, otherwise he just has to sign on the dotted line. A little flexibility is provided by the supreme court in the form that in cases of clemency, the president can use his own discretion, but generally the exercise of discretion is frowned upon. It is not really on him to refuse or accept the clemency petition. If you are against him on this ground, then please correct it.

Is this a long term solution?
by Hemant Jain on May 02, 2007 05:43 PM  Permalink

We have a democratic system to elect a team which can provide good governance. Isn't this one of the best methods to get the right people? Today all of us on this forum agree to the fact that Dr. Kalam is probably one of the most suitable person for the position, going by his unblemished track record. Aren't we being selfish in tying up such a valuable person in a job that will [as rightfully said by someone] does not serve any purpose other then being a rubber stamp of the government. It is true that a President's post is very respectable one. But in the current purview of things it does not serve any valuable purpose. Anyone with much less credentials can probably do most of what is required of the position.

In order to bring in revolution or a positive change, we will have to fall back upon the system created by the founding fathers of this nation. These systems are already there, unfortunately they have not delivered or the ones entrusted to implement them, have failed to do so. It is wrong to think that giving dictatorial powers to an individual will solve all the problems. It may absolve us of our responsibility to do something on our part for making a contribution for improvement.

Do you think that only a select few of us know exactly what is right for the country [in this case Dr. Kalam] and all the others who make there choices by casting there vote do not know anything? It's important that we rather make our bit of effort to make an improvement by educating others and by growing out of our narrow mindedness and selfishness and do whatever is the best for the country. We must make an effort to ensure that the system which has been made after so much thoughtfullness delivers instead of dumping an old one and adopting a new one. Presidential system has given "Bush" to the most powerful country of the world.

2nd Term.....
by Abhisek Rathi on May 01, 2007 09:49 PM  Permalink

In some speech, i am not sure, but he said tht he has lost a long time of his life due to presidentship and he would not like to continue it.... He wants to teach and he cant do it with this post... but still if he feels tht he can bring many changes for the welfare of the country.. he is most welcome.... after all... wht india needs is not dirty politicians, who divide us in the name of hindus and muslims... but educated class who really think tht all are equal....
