Mother Country should be respected ......... is always politically motivated.

Kannada as mother tongue can always be learned at home from mother.

the reason why an IAS officer posted to Karnataka cadre is expected to learn Kannada is because
at home one learns Kannada from your mother tongue
and at school you learn the SAME tongue..

so why not propose a hybrid tongue system,
the mother tongue learned at home and english at school .

IAS officer can be posted to karnataka a person who
knows english can be posted anywhere.

i think it is not right to deprive people of
free thinking ...it is not right oppress illerate
people.with english people can read and write and
communicate .Most of advance concept of money and
knowledge is in English books some are written by
Indians.

Should kids learn English?
by Basu on Sep 29, 2006 09:55 AM  Permalink

This is one classic example, where media is making issue out of nothing, for the sake of making a living for themselves. Karnataka education minister has often made his point clear that the action is being taken against those who took govt permission to teach in kannada medium and then started teaching in english. This is nothing but voilation of some agreement and those responsible should be punished. Govt should take care that punishment should not affect innocent kids.

Medium of instruction
by Vinod G.S on Sep 29, 2006 09:49 AM  Permalink

Politicians and their wisdom and ability to take destiny in their own hands.

All I can say is WOW!

The whole world is talking of becoming a global village and what unites is a common language. Thanks to the Kannidaga, his/her ability to learn and be proficient in English must be appreciated and further encoraged.

Bangalore is the undisputed leader in the IT and allied industries and a major contributing factor is our ability in this foreign language. The entire blah blah about kannada is by the politicians alone and they have roped in the literatuers.

If one listens there is a local lingo-Kanglish, which tells beyond doubt that English educated young and old alike mix with marvellous effect kannada and english as a spoken language.

Education is the process guided by the Wise and truly Educated. The politicians across the country have proved beyond doubt their genius. It was the forced economic liberilisation which projected Indians on the globe. How many times are we going to step back and on the verge of collapse, bring in the needed liberilisation.

Leave education to the educationists.

English Vs Kannada
by Kumar on Sep 29, 2006 09:36 AM  Permalink

I just want to highlight here that Media has misguided the people.
Karnataka government is repeatedly telling that they are not against English education. They just derecognized the schools which has permission to teach kannada and got diverted their attention to English. Its against the law of state.

Secondly we are in misconception that we can do wonders with English. English is a binding language in India, since Hindi was made as an alienation language by pretty politicians, So English has won the battle against the Hindi. Now its taking its toll on the regional language. If you can see an ordinary kannadiga speaking kannada, 50% of it will be English words.

Its the duty of government to protect its land, culture, religion and of course language. Kannada was existed long back to English.

There are many countries developed with out English like Japan, Germany.

Its a mighty excuse given by the educated people.

When Mr.Naraya Murthy of Infosys was backing up for english schools and reminding government that other wise its difficult to achieve the growth.

Mr.Basava Raj Horatti, who is the education ministers replied that its would be good if every kann

Issue is not ''No English''
by Sachin on Sep 29, 2006 09:32 AM  Permalink

Problem here is not on baning English..It had become issue when media projected it in wrong way. The real issue was school had taken license to teach in Kannada from 1-5 std.But they violated this and started English as medium. Its more of voilation of law rather than Kannada over English. So we are indeed supporting law violators. There is also a fault on politican side as they brought it up now when half of year is over.

Medium of instruction should be English
by Ravi on Sep 29, 2006 09:30 AM  Permalink

I feel the medium of instruction should be English as it helps us to compete at the global level. But kannada should be made compulsary and should be thought in such a way that, pupils are capable enough to appreciate the literature of the local language.

Localization vs Globalization
by Sanjay on Sep 29, 2006 09:29 AM  Permalink

This is an interesting topic to comment on but I think this does not relate only to Kannada but to all the States in India...English gained lot of popularity and became very essential language world wide...so there is no need to invest our thinking to support english and to shout "ENGLISH IS VERY IMPORTANT AND EVERYONE MUST KNOW ENGLISH"..lets think about our India now..and how we are going to support our languages and our community...if you look into other countries, everyone gives the top priority to their culture and promotes their culture and languages..in this context..what we Indians are doing to support or promote our tradition..even we are forcing our kids to call us "MOM & DAD" instead of "MAA and PAPA".. Learning foreign language is good and always encouraged but we must give equal priority to our local languages so that we are identified as nation which is a repository of traditions and values..

Where we are going?
by S. Balaji on Sep 29, 2006 09:28 AM  Permalink

Where we are Going? To the stone age.

Its hurting to see politician do this for their vote bank to fill, by pacifying some fundamentalists and cheating innocent people by their grace to their language.

Would their (Politicians) children study in those schools where English is banned. No not at all. They will go abroad and study English literature in Harvard Univ.

It is high time to the common people to realise that they are forfeited by the greedy & Silly politicians by the name of their Monter tounge.

This Should be stopped somewhere by taking a great mass moment in Karnataka.

by Krishna Kumar on Sep 29, 2006 09:25 AM  Permalink

In 2005,when i was in bangalore,I Could feel the discrimination of people based on language exists very much there in bangalore..Once they blocked Airport road for 4 hours demanding job preference for kannadigas causing nuisance to public. These are plans of kumaraswamy's Vote bank politics.
