This is true that we cannot grow and become superpower untill we return to our roots.Thumbs up for South. But North has ability and can lead this growth from front. But first these pseudo secularists like Marxists and Congress people should be voted out by the northern people. They will never let Hindu society grow and lead due to their political will. Think about Arjun singh who simply wants reservation in all those instutions which are best in develpoing knowledge so far.I hate young north indian community for negelecting their roots too. They find Useless craps of Karan johar as their idol simply becasue it ha something to do with USA!!!!!!!!They hate studying sanskrit just because people will laugh. Arjun singh even attempted lately to close Saraswati vidya mandirs because they teach sanskrit.I challange him and other likeminded people to say something about growing small MADARASAS IN north india!!! Mr.Arjun singh , kindly answer this.....Do they teach patriotism in Madarasas???
Article definitely lacks true reflection of the reality. By mere reading the article and knowing the name of the author, anyone can guess the origin of the writer and what he can say on this topic. It's stupidity to compare Bangalore in terms of development with the rest of south. Inclusion of history to justify is wrong. Yes, cities are booming....
Rajeev's article is very interesting. 1. Makes us think what REALLY is the cause of the development of southern Indian states. 2. Are the southern states REALLY developing faster than rest of India. 3. Is cultural continuity (& education) the root 4 the development visible in the age of globalisation.
The reviews (& replies to reviews) are also interesting. 1. A LOT of us are very interested in the development of our country. 2. A LOT of us like & love our country (& state/language) 3. A good number of reviewers strayed away from focus on development & the probable reasons 4 the development.
My thoughts: We had achieved a lot till 1750, but lost it all (almost). We should acknowledge the past, learn from our own earlier mistakes, go forward. We can do a LOT more when we work together. The story of a group of pegions flying away WITH the hunter's net is not 4 story's sake. It is 4 us to understand & implement.
In entirely acknowledge the diversity we have in our country & in the reviews. And happy that so many are interested in not just self growth, but also in the grouth of our country. If we work together we surely can develop together.
I have lived in bangalore between 1970-1999.I have seen ,understood s.india.I have seen the change which has occured when in 1970 all s. indians used to look up to north indians.Mr Srinivasan ,perhaps wants to talk about the great dravidian intelligence and oneupmanshipship vs northern dimwit. The impression that we are great intelligent ,innovative, people is all crap.I can only say that south is ahead of north because you scrub my back i will scrub your back ,be it when they come to delhi looking for a job or getting onein usa/europe for another SOUTH INDIAN.The north indian is very broad minded, openly liberal he may joke but he feels the south indians are quiet and don't create problems. The only reason south india is progressing is because of NRI remittances to karnataka, kerala,ap and tn.Their is nothing big about getting back office IT jobs from USA .The effect of christian education and importance to english in s.india hence their easy employability abroad. The north indian is enterprising, bold risktaker ,broadminded, vivacious, fun loving and more interested in staying back in India. I have not tried to spellcheck my letter .IELTS band 8.5 er no TIME
i feel it is the discipline and the moral and ethical and peaceloving values inculcated in the society in the south. violence is not seen as the only solution to problems. aggression is not considered a virtue. sincerity and truthfulness are valued. with natural resources to match, there is an atmosphere where a person can think beyond the bare necessities, and delve into intellectual stuff.
It is the work ethics and discipline of most South Indians that contributes to their rise. It is also their abilty to preserve their culture while embracing the good aspects of a new culture and making it their own that contributes to their growth. I have always been amused when some of my Tamilian friends argue with me that "Paadushah" (In Tamil B becomes a P)is an authentic Tamilian sweet when it is obvious that it is the same as Balushahi of North India which infact is a sweet of the Moghul cuisine! Or Andhras claiming "Kaja" is an authentic Andhra sweet when infact the same "Khajas" have been made from centuries before all over Bihar and Orissa etc. The flow of culture has been from North India to South India but it is in South India where it was preserved. So much so that Balushahi and Khaja are hardly popular in North India but they are very popular in South India and when south Indians claim that these are authentic south Indian delicacies Northies will be forced to believe them!
Partly because there is a conscious decision to stick to its roots, and Vedic ideals, the south still has a soul and one can actually feel a palpable difference between the south and the north. Incidentally, a recent study has established that even monkeys from the south are more cultured and civilized than those from the north ! The energy levels are different and this important difference can be felt almost immediately after crossing the Vindhyas. Amongst other positives , it is very obvious that people in the south have a much stronger value system than those in the north. Besides, southerners are generally gentler, more caring, more at peace, less corrupt and yet remarkably open to favourable new influences and trends. In fact, they seem to possess a very good radar system which allows them to assimilate the best from changes rapid or otherwise -- taking place both locally and globally and thus stay in the forefront of knowledge frontiers while rejecting systems or short term value ideas that could develop into a threat to the continuity you mention. And on this count and other counts, successive invasions and foreign domination or elements alone cannot be held responsible for the erosion and corrosion that has taken place and is continuing in the north, but thats another subject.

I liked the monkey facts, hope you werent kidding. The next time I go to a zoo, will make sure the southern monkeys get more attention.
For the North Indians ,if the South Indians say they dont want to learn Hindi why do you want to make that a big issue and why this comes up in every forum? Why do you think that a villager in southern Andhra ,whose forefathers never spoke a word other than Telugu should learn Hindi? so that a passing traveller can ask directions in Hindi ?
For South Indians, lets face these accusations of forming cliques by interacting with our brothers more frequently . Lets break the chains that hold us from sharing the joys and pains of our brothers .
For some one to claim that they are superior in Indianness to another is completely illogical . I am not sure whether we have arrived at a single definition for what Indianness is . And I pray to God that nobody gets a chance to force their version of Indianness on others .
We have not developed in infrastructure that much compared to Western countries,China and Japan and when we start to fight each other at the first hint of development we are sowing the seeds of discontent which will take its toll on future generations .
We will always be a plural, multicultural, multilingual country ,there should never be any attempt to destroy it
When me and my 5 room mates in Minneapolis working for an Indian software company talk about the language issue we always get into fights .But we always agree to disagree . To expand we have six people from six different states in my room happiily living together. A tamilian,a telugu,a maharashtrian, a Kannadiga, one from Jharkhand and one from Gujarat. Four of us are Hindus and one is a muslim and one is christian . I am not going to say who is who.
We are a country with diverse cultures and there is no denying the fact about it . We have our share of differences of language and religion and Physical features and nothing is going to change that . Why dont we stop talking bad about each other . A simple article for praising development by an author has become a bitter dispute betweeen all Indians and we denigrate ourselves at the first opportunity by classifying us into Northies and Southies .
When my grandfather joined INA in Singapore and was wounded at shillong, he did not think about liberating his own small town in Tamil Nadu nor did my uncle who died in Kashmir at the hand of terrorists think about protecting only the south Indians .
