I am surprised to know that the 'patriotic' and 'very much Indian' Mr.Srinivasan is staying not in his home country but in the US earning big time dollars!! Please come back to India and help to continue its traditional and cultural heritage instead of blaming all the different foreign invasions for India's backwardness!! People will respect your words then though personally I think its a lot of hogwash which may be due to some inherent inferiority complex attained as a result of staying among all those whites!!
As a south Indian, I personally believe that the south is more advanced because of our tolerability to assimilate all religions into our culture and live peacefully with one another. If we have views like Mr.Srinivasan has, South India will only become like Gujarat with zero percent tolerance for other religions.

What a dumb article
by Moresh on Nov 25, 2006 11:15 PM  Permalink

South is ahead that too only marginally because its people are aware of the value of education

South embraced Englilsh over Hindi , which has contributed to its success . As far as Banglore and Mumbai competing , its like a race bettween two limps . Both cities are just hobbling along with their infrastructure bursting at its seams under the weight of an unweildy population and mismanagement of the authorities

One of the most stupid things to say about a state which is doing quite well, in terms of education, IT sector, and industrial sectors. Do you read newspapers? Bill Clinton has commented about a small district in Tamilnadu - Karur... which was completely devastated during Tsunami.. how well the town has come up again in terms of rehabilitation, early warning signal setup etc... He says Florida could not respond this way after Katherina....
I think you do not know anything to talk about Tamil nadu or its people except for some dirty politics which appears in newspapers!

Wonderful! It is only Gazni,Ghori etc.are responsible for the status of BIMARU states today! When you people will be freed from the Central Asian hangovers? When people like you can be broght from the age of barbarous hordes to Nanotechnology era?
You want to throw the Tamils into the sea,but understand who has been disbursed from TN to Delhi,Mumbai, etc.and to the Western World.

Dear Yadav,
I never accept the author's contention that south is doing well because of its tradition but, reading your comments make me to doubt whether i am wrong.
Gazni, ghori etc. have ever used your stuff inside the head(i am sure it is only space )to think why rulers from tiny Afghanistan,Uzbekstan etc could overrun and plunder this country at will?Do Know that Rajendra Chola from Tamilnadu was raiding upto Ganges at the same time when Ghazni was plundering the North? Can you quote one example from North or from the entire country similar to the feat of Cholas capturing the Java,Sumatra and present Malaysia? I know it is too much to ask from you to find answers for these.Anyway i don't intend to answer to someone whose thought process is set to 2500 years backwards with a nomadic background.
If the South and Maharashtra have n't contributed to the Technology in this country, probably you people would be fighting with Pakistan with bows and arrows(like Ram did),not Agni,Prithvi,BraMos etc.
For your comments on Tamils,it is suffice to quote this. An Elephant keeps away from the path of a dirty Pig,not out of fear but out of sheer contempt.

reg: British also did a great job.
by michael joseph on Nov 24, 2006 11:55 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

sir,

The author in his hurry to appease his pseudo nationalism has forgotten an important part in this article. that the british have imparted english education in south. because of this education, and only because of this, that today we have many jobs in ITes sector, where english is the mother tongue.
Even the chinese, recently have acknowledged the fact that its only the english education system that is propelling India into its newly acquired IT super status otherwise China would have outrun India long time back.thanks to english again.

But the british hav't opened as many schools in the north and the people there were also sceptical of their presence. The people of the south embraced englsih religion as they have embraced Aryan speaking invading tribes that have conquered their land, thousands of years back(proof of indus valley civilization)and sending southerners ro peninsular region.

Instead of saying to read his articles, Mr.Srinivasan must brush up his history as well.

Hi Bhara,
We all know that Britain exploited india to further its imperialistic goals during colonisation. This was done in other countries by French,Dutch,Portugese,Spain etc.But to say that India was very rich before the advent of British and we became poorer because of that is far fetched.
A country is not a non living thing,it means its people.Again being rich does n't mean rich temples and extravagant maharajas, but it stands for the welfare of the people. It also represents richness of the ideas.I would like to remind you that even now millions of people in the country are in abject poverty.Whom do you blame?British?
Let us not waste our time on culture vulture discussions. You seem to have wrong notions about India as well.We all cherish our democratic values and unity in diversity. The founders of this nation didn't visualize India as a monocrop of one religion, one language etc.A garden with varieties of flowers looks more beautiful than another with just a single variety. If this is kept in mind always, then we can march ahead in the global arena, otherwise we will be reduced to fighting over silly things.

India and CV
by Ramdas Iyer on Nov 24, 2006 10:42 PM  Permalink

India for that matter was never a single country naturally. It is a loose conglomeration that was united by the British. Matter of fact I spent the first 26 years of my life in North Karnataka. The Achars and the murthys of south karnataka and the lingappas and bassammas of north karnataka are as different as chalk and cheese. The hindi we spoke in gulbarga wasnt anything like the one spoken in delhi or bombay or even hyderabad. In fact the hindi spoken in wadi or shahabad was rather different from that spoken in gulbarga or jewargi or sedam. People in Gulbarga call people from shahabad and wadi and raichur madrasis while those from solapur call those from gulbarga madrasis and so on. North Karnataka isnt really a sanskrit haven. It is as much a city of Khwaja Bande Nawaz as it is of Sharanabasaveshwara (who himself was no great fan of sanskrit). CV mentions Hakka, Bukka and Vijayanagara often. It is not known if he has considered places like Hampi part of north karnataka. They are not. I have lived in Tamil nadu for several years and own a house there inspite of dravidians. Coming to north India I have lived the rest of my life there. They are no saints either.

This is one of most illogical articles ever written
by Vaibhav on Nov 24, 2006 06:17 PM  Permalink

Dear Sir,
I completely appreciate the effort you have take to think out of the box to analyse the success of the south and I also appreciate the effort taken by you collect so many numbers and quotes. But the funny part is none of them are related to your theme.

You got to be kidding to state that the events of the medieval India is helping the South India grow!!! then how do you associate the immigratnt population (who r not even a decade old to south) also contributing to the growth.

You have missed the major point here, except for few urban centres many parts of the south are still worrying about survival. I think except for Tamil nadu almost all the other southern states have a serious crisis handling the urban rural divide in Kar and AP there are bigger regional imbalances. Totally the factors you included are marginal and mostly irrelevant.

There is a certain amount of fact that South is progressing faster but the factors are because of competencies that these states have developed from 1900's onwards, which includes major stress on Education and development of skill base, which attract industries.

Your article is totally irrelevant
