Your article was quit good but there are some more factors which actully effect the analysis presented by you.
During the stay of my two years in south i saw that the ground level working people of government like police official(traffic and general both), RTO, Pollution control officials (even industrial) supervisors etc are more honest towards there work. There is high level of education awarness and education which makes people more knowledgeable for rules and regulation of the state. This creats a fear in the minds of corrupt people and hence the corruption level drastically reduces. Also we will find that there is traditional money present in the families in south and hence the craze of money is less making it even less corrupt region. The discipline level of people is also hig and hence the justice works and is not delayed. I think these factor contributes to better development of south india as compared to many states of india. Thehigh corrupt regions like Bihar, UP etc happenes to be far more worst in their condition. Else you will find region in north like punjab, rajasthan etc are equally doing well
Do you think there's any need to discuss such an issueless topic. Remember its the Indian history & Culture that is rich, not the southern culture. And the dances which are mentioned are Indian dances...
Comparison of chinese history with Indian is acceptable but what is this whole issue about north and south.
It has more to do with politics than culture!!!! The leaders in the south r interested in uplifting their states while those in north r busy filling their pockets.
I am a north indian living in South for last 20 yrs or so. I have been going to North to my place and to meet my relatives. The contrast in North and South developement was so glaring and hitting me forcefully.I want to settle in the North along with my relatives. But I find North very much Backward in every sence of the term. It is intelectually and socially backward. The prograss South has done because of its simple people who are God fearing in real terms. They are selfish to a limited extent. They know also that if society flourishes they will also flourish. They want to create an environment- a happy environment around them. There leaders are much more general development oriented rather than their own selfish aims.Southern leaders who are in central government are helping their states to a very great extent. Unfortunately it is not so with Northern Leaders. They are bogged down in self enrichment and petty politiccs to retain their influence.Their thinking is low. They are not able to raise themselves above self. Unfortunately the Northern population was dominated by Rajas and rulers. Their mindset is that except their homes nothing belongs to them. and so do not bother to dev
"There is a simple question: Why? What is the reason behind the South's ascendance? An equally simple answer would be: tradition. Or cultural continuity. The South has generally hewed to its ethnic, linguistic, and cultural patrimony, without necessarily being insular. This is the very reason -- rootedness -- behind the South's current growth." This quotes is totally incorrect and miss guiding to the people. The reality is that comunism is adapated in south more & more. The English is the favourite than national language for south. More educated unemployed are in the south. More IAS officers from after indepedent of India are working at higher position in the central governments but due to their self goals whole system developed such manner that red tapped bureaucratic procedures which make our nation too too much much behind the other countries like Japan, Germany etc. (who have started from like nothing)

There is no denying the fact, that South is doing well. many of my friends & colleagues, gape the development., when they see the roads, connectivity, buildings, educational facilities etc, at Hyderabad, & Bangalore, Chennai & Kochi.. catching up fast..
But all this happened from past 15-20 years only. We dont have to think/go back discussing 100 of years.
The invest ment on education past 20 years, and enormous faith of parents, in good education for their children has resulted, in better careers, better facilities, large projects and thinking minds, who can demand local politicians, what is required for better living conditions and get it.
Education brings in development and higher levels of productivity, prosperity etc..
Well, first india devided into India-Pakistan, then now Kashmir issue and then LLTE and some feeling percolating inside the hearts of indians as if there are two different india- North and South India. I feel hurt when I think this. I have heard from south indians and found that they think in terms of South and North India and I feel that they less think about whole India. During one conference, a guy from Pakistan told me that your south indian people do not speak hindi and they do not accept it as national language, etc. I, naturally, did not like it when he pointed out it to me and was interested to know more. I replied him that we have variety of people as India is very large, long and wide, and so we have difference of opinon. I will really be happy to know if there is no such feeling percolating in hearts of indians in North and South parts ofindia. I hope people feel happy to think about whole india without further dividing it in different regions, otherwise our own strength decreases as a nation. Although my message is not relevant/ less relevant to the article but I just thought it to share with the other readers, specially those who think in terms of South/North india.
This message is for people like CV and all others who don't believe in United India.
People in India think the first war for Independence was fought in Meerut in 1857. The truth is it was fought in 1806 in Vellore, a town in Tamilnadu. Please follow the link for more details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vellore_Mutiny
However, there need not be any fight as to who fought first. (The answer is "WE the people of India"). It is disgusting to see religious, linguistic and communally inclined people very active in this message board. Let me tell you that Netaji wasn't a racist. His aim was to liberate India. He joined hands with whoever who was strong enough to take on Britain.
We do have cultural difference and difference in opinion. Let us not talk about past (good or bad) and concentrate on present to make India, a country which can help the entire mankind to grow and prosper. It is not knowing English or Hindi or South Indian languages or being Hindu or Muslim or Parsi or Christian a passport to live in India. Never forget that you are an Indian irrespective of who, how, where you were born. Jai Hind.
the south is doing well alright, but this article very conveniently twists facts to suit its own ends. china is a far from being a continuous civilization - people who live in china clearly realise the major disconnect that the cultural revolution had caused with the past kerala in the south has one of the largest christian populations which has been overlooked by srinivasan. kerala also has a history of islamic influence that predates the northern invasions. the south probably did well because it was the first to move away from reactionary protectionism of age old religious superstitions and embraced education and contact with the outside world. the south's relative rejection of the hindutva brigade demonstrates its rejection of narrow interpretations of hindu culture which is probably another strong reason for success. lets stop looking for people to blame for the failure of the north. we are to blame - accepting that is the first step to setting it right
