People like Mr. Rajeev Srinivasan are allowed to write such articles on Rediff because of their good language(writing) skills even though their articles are full of arrogance, prejudice, etc. This is a problem throughout India. We value language skills more than the ideas.
dear fellow Indians The author has putforth his views. Let's use our filer to filter out unwanted comments that challenge our unity. Such articles are good to induce a debate. we have the this quality of pulling each others.

If you filter out things that do not add up to our Nations Unity and Glory - for a putrid columnist of Rajeev's standard there will be nothing left in the article to read. He writes pure braindead stuff.
The author tries to mislead the readers. Although continuity of culture and tradition may have contributed to some extent, other factors like Education and the flexibility of people to accept/adapt to other cultures have become more important for development. In fact, I think education is the number one factor - this contributed to the development of Chennai as a powerful center for quite some time, however, the inflexibility of people in the far southern states/cities in accepting other cultures/languages undermined their economic importance, and the rise of Hyderabad (which lagged in education but picked up fast) and Bangalore which happened to be more flexible in terms of acceptance and adaptation to new cultures/people.
Hello everybody....... I am a south Indian presently staying from past 7 years in the north..... I did not really feel any big difference between south and north inidna cities...... Yes there is difference in the villages of north and south.... I feel villeges in noorth shold be better developed......especially villages of UP and Bihar.....are neglected by Govt. Corruption is everyware in India..... May be you can say... in south it may 10% less when compared to north...... One thing I noticed in north...... frankly speaking.... people are less tolarent when compared to south.... I found most of the cultural customs in North part has little mixture of Islam..... dress..... dishes etc...
Thank u sir, for explaining the value of culture and language and its impact on human development.
I appreciate u for pointing out the success of Vijayanagara empire. In their time, all aspects of human welfare are taken care of.
People who forget their own culture, language and value systems and ape others blindly can not have a chance to have good society.
I have read some comments saying that South is not that good or that ur column creates North-South divide. It is more of fear from North Indians. They themselves made hell of a society in north and now cribbing that south is to be blamed. Condition of lower caste ppl is far far worse in north than in south.
If these educated 'IT coolies' go to north now, there r no jobs for them ! Hence need for them to crib. They want to thrust Hindi on South ppl. But Hindi is just one of the derived languages from Sanskrit. Hence for South ppl, it is Sanskrit + Mother tounge + English. No more bullshit Hindi and their bullshit Hindi movies (DON and VIVAH included !!) !
Ethics, Values, Education, Agriculture, Feeling of equality..these should continue to be the pillars for India in general.

Reply to Mr. Nitin:
If u see current scenario of India, Hindi ppl are the ones who wants to thrust their language when they come out of their native states. In Bangalore, sometime back (not any more!) shop-keepers had to tell the rate of goods in Hindi (Saade-Das, etc). No other Indian language ppl wud do this if they go to ohter states. Hence the defensive against Hindi. If this also is resisted, then it cud become offensive !!
My credentials on Hindi are damn good (Better than the modern IT coolies!). I am from Hyd and I worked in Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. Stragely, I found problems with some language-chavunistic crowd in Infosys !! For some weak ppl, Hindi is a strage way to feel superior !! That is what is being contested.
As regards Chennai, being a Telugu, I did not find any problem and I do not know Tamil. When I worked in Delhi, I did not find problem with either Hindi/Punjabi ppl. But something is wrong with Hindi 'IT Coolies' in Southern states.
P.S: Bullshit is relative. Fact is less of a bullshit !!

Punjabi Gurumukhi is not dying, thats something uv made up again,, i live there, just because a person from a state with regional language does not direspect hindi, or other states' language does not mean that his state's language will die. If some non-punjabi comes to punjab, ppl talk to him in hindi, now if you think this way punjabi will die then i cant help you. I have been living in bangalore for sometime, i dint know kanada initially, now i knw a lil bit of it, the only language i could have talked in bangalore initially would be hindi or english, would it make sense for me to expect a bangalorean to speak punjabi?? no way, tht wd be stupid of me!!
So if it is ok for me (a person frm a state with regional language) to come to bangalore and expect to survive with hindi initially(and slowly learn kannada alongside),, then whats the problem if a guy frm UP or MP expects that?

well u call one of countries prominent languages "bullshit", and then u talk about ethics... huh,, how stupid of you! I dont know who forced u to speak hindi, but go to chennai once, ull see what forcing a language actually means when people refuse to talk to u if u dont talk in tamil, and this is not for northies, even for kanadigas n telugus like u.. Im a Punjabi, i have my state language too, but unlike u i dont have any issues with hindi. i have equal respect for punjabi, hindi, sanskrit!!
BTW Hindi, and none of the other languages is bullshit, ur mentality is..

Nitin, there are people who force Hindi. Aggression against hindi is essential defensive not offensive. You said tamils won't speak with others if we don't speak in tamil. Then do you think Hindis speak with us if we refuse to speak in hindi? You said that you have equal respect to hindi, punjabi, sanskrit. why not others? Please understand that no language should dominate the other. I wonder if you know that if Hindi takes over, the regional language dies - as it is happening to the regional language of Punjab - Gurumukhi.
What the writer says may or may not be true. But what the South badly needs is a backbone to stand up for its self respect. that somehow seems to be missing. I find this especially in Kerala, where the mallus are pathetically happy to camouflage themselves.
Bad analysis. He is truly biased. Why do I always read or hear a south indian trying to claim that they are better. Do they suffer from inferiority complex of some type? I have never read an article saying that Mumbai /puna/Delhi/ gurgaon is developing coz of northindians. Hyderabad has started developing only recently and fyi people from all over the country is working in the IT companies of Hyderabad. Also bangalore has population which consists people from other metropolitan cities of india.
Well the only field where south is doing well is IT field, and its not the entire south, its jus 3 cities Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai which are doing well. And chennai continues to be the most unfrindly city for an outsider, be it for some from Karnataka, or someone from north. South needs to pay more attention to other cities as well.
