mr. srinivasan again prove his intellectual insolvency by finding the source of southeren progress are existence of vijayanagar empires and so on. as a keralite the basic reason for keralas progress is made by 1. the land reform made by marxist government 2. eductional development leaded by christian minority 3. the teachings of shree narayan gurudev and 4. progressive thinking people of high class society. really these are the basic reason for the development of keral. and the reason that mr. srinivasan indicates. if that is so why america become a most developed state? it has just very short period of history!!!!

Please Mr. Geaorge. Keep the Christian education away..Kerala School of Mathematics founded by Madhava of Sangamangrama invented Calculus, which Jesuits copied to Europe. I guess there is no engineering without calculus.
When Gama came to India, the only technology he had was guns! prove me wrong please. And Columbus was looking for India and hit American land mass and called it Indians! I thought he was looking for that India that is well known in Trade and knowledge base etc..
Marxist party also made education al reforms, Nair Service Society also has hundreds of educational schools for people, unlike the Christians that charge thousands every month, so I guess it can be called business for the rich..gimme a break!

The idea of minority is instituted by cunning christians of Kerala. About 50 years ago all schools in India were Christian ones, donated by British to Christian for their faithfullness. But after independence many Hindu Organisations such as RSS,Chinmaya Mission, etc started their schools challenging the hold of Christian Missionaries in education. The cunning christians then resorted to Minority bandwagon to establish their supremacy in education inorder to train pro christian Hindus. So they cried for consessions, aid from goverment. The Minority-Congress-Secular Alliance brought and passed a bill to free Minority Institution from State or Central Govt control. They can sell their seats as much as required. In a place like Kerela most of the schools,Enginneering,Medical Colleges are under control of Fathers ,Sisters .This was obtained through continuous lobbying.A scenario is reached where the newly introduced bill would give complete control of education under Christian Missionaries,Muslim Mullahs. Thus hindu students have to wait from order of Fathers,Sisters,Mullahs to get Education.
I will say rather South India is relatively performing better recently due to its large pool of technical and higher educated skilled human resource and its nothing to do with its retention of historical Indian civilization. Investment in private engineering colleges and higher studies started in South India roughly three decades ago and it is paying back now. This time was quite earlier than many other states in India invested in this area. The only non-south Indian state which started investing in private engineering college and higher studies at point of time was Maharastra and which is equally competitive with other South Indian states. In commerce and business Maharastra is still ahead of all South Indian states and three of its cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune are equally competitive with Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai for IT and biotech industries. So, correlation between investment in human resource (in higher education, engineering, management and science by generating higher number of skilled man power at low wages) and recent success story of South India would hold better both logically and practically. This is evident from the case of Malaysia and Philippine.

Hi Ramesh, Thanks for your compliment. Surely, Pune does not equal to the level of Banaglore, Chennai or Hyderabad, but is considered next to it. Pune still offers a higher oppertunity for IT, BT and auto industries than many other cities in India, one can find it with the govt statistics and investment proposals in last one decade. Mumbai is still the leader and much ahead of Chennai, Hyderabad and even Bangalore when is comes to commerce other than IT and BT based industries. IT/ITES based industries in Hyderabad is eight fold smaller than that of Bangalore. So for comparison sake, when one levels Bangalore (IT export @ ~85000 crore) with Hyderbad (IT export @ ~10000 crore), Pune (IT export @ ~9000 crore)is defintely in edge with Hyderabad though someone may not like it as a city. In BT and Auto industries also the figure would be similar or may be a larger figure for Pune in auto industries.

You seemed to be a learned man and i respect your views.
however your claim that navi mumbai and pune are competitive with places like bangalore and chennai is hyperbole.I have worked in Pune and pretty much know the scene in the city.I really can't see how.
Dear Mr Rajiv Srinivasan, Your article unnecessarily drags a correlation between present success of South India in engineering sectors with retention of its distinctive cultures, language and cuisines by totally ignoring scientific justification. Every Indian is proud of South India for its distinct culture, heritage, language and cuisine in social point of view; however, there is no justification of your theory to its recent success in engineering and science based industrial boom. Your theory can not explain about the historical success of USA, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Norway, etc. In Indian context it also totally fails to explain industrial boom of West Bengal in 1950s, that of Maharastra and Gujrat in 1980s & 1990s. In business and commerce, Maharsatra and Gujrat are still ahead of many South Indian states. Even you have ignored other social index by just focusing on going industrialization in engineering sectors, mainly fueled by IT & BT. Northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat are quite ahead of AP, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu (except Kerala) in many social index .....(continue innext posting)
I agree with only one point mentioned in the article.North India always suffered the brunt of invaders. They faught with various invaders and hence lost its cultural and financial property. You can say that South now is little better than North as North have been saving and protecting the whole country by fighting foreigners. If you look at the history of Indian civilization I dont come across any incidence of Southern stated doing anything for India .They always remained in their kingdom peacefully. Forgot Nalanda university ( the rich collection of Indian scriptures and knowledge)? , it was burned by Mohameddans when they invaded.
But I have one question to Rajeev, why do you think that preserving Indian culture ( as happened in South) helps in the growth ??

you know nothing about indias freedom sturggle!!!!!!!! try to read some articles abt india's freedom struggle.
The only reason India is existing as a single entity is because of people from north India. Give me names 5 freedom fighters from south and I'll give you kudos. South India is developing because people from North India protected south India throghout its history. People from south India do not have the balls to fight. The only thing which comes to my mind is Tipu sultan and he was the mohamddein according to author who was responsible for under-development. Pity on the way you think. Just Rubbish!
I strongly belive south has more values and culture than north..which is helping south grow at a much faster rate..All the four state of the south are better developed than the rest of india together...All south indian have a history and identy ..ppl are proud to be Tamilian or mallu or a telugu..whereas north most of the ppl have forgotten their roots and trying to imitate the west...
I completely agree with the writer. There is nothing wrong in saying that North and South are divided today by cultural difference. South has grown and not only developed into very rich land of knowledge and culture but also it has well adapted and accepted the changes that has come accross. How many people knew about Bangalore in its old days when it was just city to visit as a holiday destination but today it has changed the face of India by contributing largest Income tax collected anually. Though there is corruption and political mess allover India but there is always and will be difference between North and SOuth in the way they developed and changed themselves. Just check out the number of opportunites in SOuth and how many people migrate from North to South in search of work. And if still you are not satisfied with the writer visit any temple in North and see yourself how you can get dirtiest place for worship as compared to South or travel in reserved compartment in Northern and Southern trains and you will have your doubts cleared. Do not get emotional if you are staying in North try to understand what the writer is trying to say.
Well Rediff for sure has shown how divided our country is, and how much people hate eah other. In this blog, we can see how northie n southies hate each other, within southie karnataka ppl dont like tamilians n vice versa, within north indians, biharis are not liked much. Then we have Hindu muslim division, you can see that in another blog related to sania mirza!! Dont know if rediff is doing the right thing by trying to show how much our country people hate each other, but it seems to be a fact!
Preference to English & centuries old inclination towards maths are in Souths favor. Another factor is the sheer absence of a driving economy in the south unlike Mumbai(West), Delhi(North) & Calcutta(East), encouraging everyone to jump on the IT band wagon.
IT firms set up in South really haven't shown their spirit yet by embarking on a mission of their own. It has been the age old slavery in the manner of rendering IT services to fortune companies.
Two factors that help some one attain new height are 1) Freedom of expression 2) Being away from home land. Relate this to the success of USA with immigrants coming in, in search of new life. The continued culture of Native Indians has been suppressed to the core, having no influence on its global dominance. North Indian employees have fair share in the success of IT firms down South.
About Mogul atrocities in the north - AP had seen the same even until the end of British Raj. Then why are the Andhrites doing good ? They should be down with their spirit, especially in Hyderabad. Answer is simple, it is whether you have contemporary freedom for expression and the inherent talent to express !
