Nothing will change
by Mushtaq patel on Nov 08, 2006 07:49 PM  Permalink

U.S. like India is a democratic country, the foreign policies of which DO NOT change with the change of guard... As was the case with the change of power from NDA to UPA...in terms of foreign policy nothing has really changed... So the media should not go overboard over this issue.. Wait and watch is the best thing to do... During the lame-duck session there is very high probabilty that the deal with get through. The stakes for the two great democracies in this world are just too high.

Indo-US relation after US mid term vote result
by Dr S Banerjee on Nov 08, 2006 05:44 PM  Permalink

It must be realised by all in India more so by the media that US foreign policy is by and large based on national interest and not on party basis. No politician
in USA ingonres the importance of emerging economic and political strength of India. One must also have to
take in to account of the lame duck two year period where both the parties in US need to grow in strength
in geo politic to face the greater battle in 2008 election.Under this background India need not worry at
all and should negotiate from the point of strength.
It shall also be noted in India thet the Indian-Ameri-can group are second strongest to Jew group and have
plenty to add in US policy.Neither Democrat nor Republican can ignore this strength and that is fact of life in US politic.India has nothing to fear.

Honeymooning over a deal gone sore!
by CS Muralidhar on Nov 08, 2006 05:38 PM  Permalink

Yes, the US-India nuclear deal has definitely gone cold, stale, sore and if you like it, quite dead with no mourners in the US establishment, to be honest. No point crying over it. It was never destined to see the light of the day. It is good that it has gone the way it has! In the long run it is better for India to take the tough and uphill route to energy through Fast Breeder Reactor. At least we will reach there in 10-15 years independently with no back up from any foriegn source. What Manmohan and his so called experts want is to source nuclear fuel for the conventional reactors easily without sweating it out and in return subject our nuclear programme to inspection, surveillance and the much touted technological support. They don't want our scientists and engineers to remain independent and develop the revolutionary FBR technology with no strings attached. In this the political establishment has everything to gain as most of our politicians have their cosy nests and sanctuaries abroad in the West! They even have one foot ever planted abroad in the form of some of their kith and kin having become naturalised citizens over there!!

Nuclear Deal
by Pranay Pradhan on Nov 08, 2006 05:38 PM  Permalink

There will be no threat to nuclear deal even if there is a change in political scenario in US. Above all the deal is a focal point of changes in the political situation in US-Indo relation. Whether Democrat or republic , need of hour for USA is long lasting relation with economically stronger new India.

Democrats? Republicans? Who Cares!!!!!
by Himalay Oza on Nov 08, 2006 05:36 PM  Permalink

The history of last 2 decades shows that whether it is Democrats or Republicans they have always looked at India as a 'Huge Market'. We can be their biggest market in nuclear fuel / energy sector. Its the Business that drives US politics and as long as this is the case it does not matter whether Democrats rules the US or Republicans.

Focus on EU!!!
by Vishwanath G on Nov 08, 2006 05:29 PM  Permalink

U.S.A is a military superpower so maintaining good bilateral relations with U.S is of strategic significance...
But it is important for us to understand tht. India and U.S are competitors in the global field...Both India and U.S r endowed with skilled humann resources as well as a wealth of natural resources...
Just look at the situation in Eu..both r vying hard to become europe's Biggest trade partner....

It is v.important to understand hat it is the Europen Union which is gonna b a lot dependant on us in the future...Coz..they lack human resources:quantitatively and qualitatively too...Their demands for skilled resources is gonna exceed supply over the next 3 decades and only india can satisfy the demand...

So wake up and Focus on Eu..Make EU our biggest global partner and give U.S the goosebumps..coz...the U.S requires our help in the political humdrum aand we can bargain with both EU and US and rise in political adn economic stature....
Its necessary to show the U.S tht. we have an alternative strategy...which is better than the current one..so tht. U.S can toe our line

It's back to basics for both US & India
by Manoj on Nov 08, 2006 05:17 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Hi,
The win of the Democrats, who have traditionally been hostile towards India, would take US down the beaten path of supporting Pakistan & berating India. Be prepared for more bomb-blasts, etc. Similarly, even the Congress party seems keen to return to do what it knows best; tilt at windmills like NAM & foreign investment, etc. The appointment of Pranab Mukherjee as FM is the clearest indication of this.
