Bangalored!
by Sumit Jeloka on Nov 01, 2006 05:05 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Hi!
Many people like me are not exactly thrilled that the city is being rechristened as Bengalooru. But then there are people who are happy as well. The name, Bengalooru, supposedly reaffirms the original identity of the place. Nothing can be further away from the truth.
The identity of Bangalore lies in it's multiculturalism. Bangalore is a city where you have auto wallahs trying to speak in English, and passengers trying to string together sentences in Kannada. That is Bangalore. Not what the politicians will like you to believe.
Many a North Indian has been enriched by the Kannada language and Kannadiga culture. Bangalore has been enriched in turn, by people from all across the country, and the World. It has truly attained a global identity and brand name. The city welcomes outsiders with open arms. These outsiders then adopt the city as their own. Both benefit in the process.
Rename the city, if you must, but don't make it mandatory for people to use it. Have it as the official name, by all means, in your records. But allow the people of the city to express their identities using the name of their choice. Please, do not impose it on us.

why we are somuch intrested for a change of name of a City. Mumbai, Kolkatta, Chennai, their names changed

hardly had any impact on development of a city.

The hour demands proper infrastructure, please take up those issues to address.

total waste of money
by Sriram on Nov 01, 2006 05:04 PM  Permalink

the govt can do something abt the bad roads and pathetic infrastructure rather than go and change names of cities. think abt the expense involved in changing names on all the boards of organizations, visiting cards! What is needed is not a change of name, but a change of attitude

It sounds conventional !!!
by Manish Batra on Nov 01, 2006 05:04 PM  Permalink

Frankly speaking,Bangalooru sounds rather conventional as against a very techy BANGALORE.

I think they should not disturb it.World knows BANGALORE as the technology hub of India,so why to play with its name.

The name Bangalore has a Brand value. And its recognized through out the world as IT hub. Its not going to change, but it will take time for the world to accept it. Karanataka is just following the path which other states has shown.

Do you agree with the state government's decision to rename Bangalore and other places? Would it make any difference
by sudhish kumar on Nov 01, 2006 05:00 PM  Permalink

It is absurd to rename bangalore. i was a bangalorean for many years though not living in bangalore now. old bangaloreans like us cannot think of such foolish ideas that will loose a city's identity. why do you want to follow maharashtra, TN, WB in changing names. bangalore has seen so much growth that internationally it is identified by a name. changing it to the liking of some people OR for the sake of kannada is unwarranted. i thought kannadigas are slightly different from their neighbouring states. but they have fallen to the likes of the ananthamurthy's.

We reap what we sow
by Vijay on Nov 01, 2006 04:59 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

From my personal standpoint, I am not opposed to "renaming" a city. But, what is more important is the purpose and the perceived benefits of renaming. Will Bangalore change in anyway if it is renamed to Bengaluru? No! Will it make a difference to the day to day life of any Bangalorean? No! Will it attract any new development options, or improve civic services, or make government and civic bodies function better? No! Then, why the hell is the government wasting the taxpayers' money? Change of name means a lot of expenditure: new name posts all across the city, legal documentations need to reflect the change, etc, etc. Why can't the government use that money to improve our roads, clean up the sand that covers up roads, improve drain facilities, etc instead of wasting it on a stupid name-change. With or without the name change, Bangalore/Bengaluru is the same. When will our country and society rise up beyond these petty language/regional politics? I would like to know from other readers if we citizens can actually take the Government to court on this matter: "no perceived benefits of name change, hence improper utilization of public funds" Please help me with info...

Renaming the state name who is going to GAIN.

only these politicians only. they just fool the people and make agenda in their election campaign.

Changing the name of State like Madras to Chennai, Bombay to Mumbai, Calcutta to Kolkotta and now Banglore to Bangalooru. doesnt make any difference. Simply people tax money being wasted. I dont know what gain people is going to get. Who ever says like this those people's thick and thins doesn't know the state languge properly.

Whatever idiotic thing done by West Bengal,Maharastra, Tamilnadu and Kerla government has done , now Kartanaka falls in this TRAP and joined as new member. So this will go on to other states on.

If a State name is Changed one should analysis how people money is wasted.

1. All the govt. related forms, govt. bus tickets and other related govt documents, govt seals will have include new city name. then what will happen to the old form it will b simply wasted.

Better V can utilise this money to uplift the people who where in the remote Villages still in need of basic things. I think The Hon President should take action regd. this
