Bangalored!
by Sumit Jeloka on Nov 01, 2006 05:05 PM

Hi!
Many people like me are not exactly thrilled that the city is being rechristened as Bengalooru. But then there are people who are happy as well. The name, Bengalooru, supposedly reaffirms the original identity of the place. Nothing can be further away from the truth.
The identity of Bangalore lies in it's multiculturalism. Bangalore is a city where you have auto wallahs trying to speak in English, and passengers trying to string together sentences in Kannada. That is Bangalore. Not what the politicians will like you to believe.
Many a North Indian has been enriched by the Kannada language and Kannadiga culture. Bangalore has been enriched in turn, by people from all across the country, and the World. It has truly attained a global identity and brand name. The city welcomes outsiders with open arms. These outsiders then adopt the city as their own. Both benefit in the process.
Rename the city, if you must, but don't make it mandatory for people to use it. Have it as the official name, by all means, in your records. But allow the people of the city to express their identities using the name of their choice. Please, do not impose it on us.
