Bangalore
by Wasim on Nov 01, 2006 08:53 PM  Permalink

It doesn't matter to change the name of a city. Its just a waste of time and money. People have elected them to do some good work not just to change the name of cities.

The price of branding
by Mahesh on Nov 01, 2006 08:52 PM  Permalink

Ive never learnt how to evaluate a brand's value. So whats wrong if our political class is as ignorant as I am. How does it matter if Bangalore is renamed Honululu, sorry, Bangaluru? No, surely, I will fully relate with World's IT hub as before and I will neither laugh nor crib over whatever its called. It will never matter to me if tommorow Infy is forced to rename as Nirma washing powder. Im an ignorant fool about these names and of course I do understand the compulsions of local politics, you see?!

Rename to retain identity.
by Nid on Nov 01, 2006 08:41 PM  Permalink

Bengaluru is its name, why call it Bangalore the way British pronounce it?

Isn't Delhi, dhilli?

It is time we go back to our roots, stop calling our cities the way Britishers pronounced.

Change India to Bharath too!

Put the bang back in Bangalore ???
by Abhishek on Nov 01, 2006 08:00 PM  Permalink

Is this how politicians are bringing back in Bangalore??? Renaming the city will only help to waste the taxpayers money and will help politicians to use that money for their personal benifits. Also, Bangalore is the name recognized all over the world so i think changing it is not a wise idea. Although i agree with a post on this site that the name should have been changed at the time of independence if decolonization is the only purpose to change it...

bangalore to BengaLooru
by lakshman on Nov 01, 2006 07:44 PM  Permalink

Hi,
The state government has taken the right decision to rename Bangalore to Bengalooru. It is nice to get back to original name which has Kannada flavour. When all other cities changed their names there was no problem. This question has cropped up now just because Kannadigas are ever accomodative? Did you all raise such a hue and cry when Madras was changed to Chennai or Bombay to Mumbai?
The argument of many is abt the brand Bangalore taking a beating. This new name would be accepted by all and the brand would become brand BengaLooru.
I also see that most of the Kannadigas would want the name change. But only the migrated population who do not have any idea abt the kannada culture, language, heritage, history would want it to remain as Bangalore.
I request the migrated population to respect the local sentiments and get into the mainstream of the local culture. And the name change is also a step to induce the kannadiga pride into all the kannadigas in Karnataka.
Sirigannadam Gelge Sirigannadam Balge.

regards,
Lakshman

it is bengalooru and not bangalooru
by sharath on Nov 01, 2006 07:42 PM  Permalink

Rediff,

Before asking these kind of questions in a public forum like this, be sure of what you are posting. The proposed change is not Bangalooru, but bengalooru.

It is a very good decision on part of government of Karnataka to implement this change. As many readers pointed out here, compared to changes that happened in case of Chennai, Mumbai or Kolkatta, bangalore to 'bengalooru' is not a big change.

Like wise, mangalore to mangalooru, mysore to mysooru, belgaum to belagaavi....

Useless exercise...
by Hari on Nov 01, 2006 07:35 PM  Permalink

Renaming of the city's name, a useless exercise causing confusion, reminds me of the kannada proverb

Kelasavillada kumbara makaLa ...
