greater than USA

America may be the largest democracy. India is the greatest democracy in the world. The writer need not have any doubts about it.

Let India rise above India
by c s krishnamurti on Mar 25, 2006 12:41 PM  Permalink

The author's approach spells of idealism than facing thestarkreality.Beitpolitics, governance, education, the arts, sports, the vested interests resort to the media, the courts, the legislature, and even the exalted office of the Executive , as a vehicle to achieve their ends. In its struggle to survive competition the Media crosses its code of ethics and thrives to corrupt peoples mind.As a nation we need to exercise high discretion and restraint, rather than making ourselves a spectacle to the world around watching us.Wecannottrampleonpublicfigures,Institutions, exalted personages in the nameof news coverages and get away with it.Permissiveness in any form is a crime.
Regards,
C.S.Krishnamurti

petty thoughts in garb of universal ideas
by a on Mar 17, 2006 11:38 AM  Permalink

Another addition to the rising number of articles on rediff that spit upon and can't bear to see Indian progress.
The statement"Can we not cast aside the shackles of this narrow-minded nationalism and be great once again?" tells a lot about the intelligence, motive and driving ideas of the author.

Redifining India
by Ravi on Mar 17, 2006 10:16 AM  Permalink

The thoughts expressed in the essay are so lofty that they would seem relevent for a borderless world of the future. It is as if India as a concept is this borderless world itself. How very nice to think so to ourselves!. But, does the rest of the world think so. Sadly, we would be deluding ourselves if we continue to believe in this ideal for our daily sustenance.
If the past is any indication; simply look at our earlier policy of Non Allignment and the lofty principles of Panchsheel propounded by us to set a meaningful discourse with other nations of this world. These have not got us anywhere, confounded us in the ruthless logic of national self interest and earned us the odium of being a sly, self seeking and opportunistic country- a country that only preaches but practises the opposite.
It is time that we as a country stopped preaching and instead practised truthfulness. Yes the time has indeed come to define what we want to be in this world.

India above India
by Vijay on Mar 17, 2006 06:53 AM  Permalink

Nice article. Everytime one listens to the TV news in India or read Indian newspapers one cringes at the absolute depths to which the media has fallen. I mean should an actor's second marriage be a 'breaking news'? This state of affairs will no doubt help create a shallow public, like majority of the Americans, who, having been fed on inane domestic and local news for years together, now are unable to attach value to any real news.

Pragmatism and idealism
by Praveen on Mar 17, 2006 02:19 AM  Permalink

Your idealistic view is great to read. I really wish every Indian regardless of faith or belief system he/she follows would have such ideal India in mind. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. India has been conquered before and Indians have been punished for the passive attitude. The invaders justified their brutal assaults and suppression of India by saying, "these Indians are meant to be ruled, slaved and brutalized." It is true that India and Hindusim embraced these people and allowed them to coexist despite the evil committed on them. But, modern India cannot remain passive and indifferent. It has to be pragmatic and base its policies on sound understanding of geo-political, socio-religious realities. The universal view, embrace of diversity has to go hand-in-hand with tough crackdown of divisive religious fanticism of dogmatic religions, who differentiate between believers and non-believers. Prosylitizing by exploitation of poverty to increase their numbers need to be put an end. We have seen this world marred by so many wars fought between these exclusivist belief systems. If we don't defend the liberal hindu dharma from such forces, there will be no India.
