Top Priority Wipe out terrorism - Part 2
by Giri Girishankar on Mar 16, 2006 07:28 PM  Permalink

Continued from Part 1:

The terrorist acts that we are increasingly seeing in India are, in fact, a trend that is rapidly spreading across the world. The Government of India must make it a top priority to wipe out terrorism from the country, deal severe punishment to the perpetrators, inform the public of the dangerous spread of terrorism and advise them of how they can be helpful in exposing terrorist activities. Most importantly, it is necessary to eliminate all weak spots in the society that can provide an opportunity for destabilizing activities; for example, the politicization of secularism that only creates divisions in the society.

Top Priority Wipe out terrorism - Part 1

It is hard to believe that the Indian security officials are not aware of the terrorist networks and cells, the local supporters of these cells and networks, and their sources of funds. But it is not hard to believe that certain state governments, which loudly swear by secularism as one of their main policy planks, turn a blind eye to terrorist activities in the minority community for fear of losing political influence. These governments have at best attempted to solve these situations by appeasing the minority community with special treatment in educational institutions, places of work and even in the armed forces. Apparently, a small number of people among the minority population, who are motivated by hatred and ill will for India, are exploiting this misplaced sense of fairness to destabilize India and destroy its social fabric. It is not surprising that they are deriving considerable inspiration from across the countrys Western border.(Continued in Part 2)

Hi! Very Well thought out piece! To the best of my knowledge terrorism and communal violence is not new to India.... only in earlier times everything was not so politicised... i am not too sure how well the govt is going to stand up to it.
