I think it is clear to every single Indian that the caste system is going to be there for another 2500 years. No one believes it is going away. The root cause of most problems in India is the vast growth of the population, tripling in 60 years during which reservations were present.
I think the best solution would be to partition India into 2-3 different countries, then no one will have to offer justitications for reservations and percentages, nor feel merit is being compromised etc. Every group will have 100% reservations in their own countries and will worry about progressing in life rather than hating each other. And everyone will be much happier.
Otherwise I can predict what will happen, as some classes diminish in stature, they will realise that population growth is key to demand benefits, and will start having 10 kids to boost their percentage and become majority. Seeing this, other groups will also up their number of kids. One can imagine the results: massive overpopulation and land degradation, food and water riots, famine, instability as hatred and counter hatred increases and everyone will suffer.
Why doesn't anyone support this? It is the best solution.

I fully agree and India should be divided into country for General category, SCST and OBC. Strange it seems to me that OBC means OB class and not caste and yet the reservation is caste based. Backward class also includes poor upper caste so why not to give them reservations. Corrupt communists in India who shout from their rooftops about class are actually putting this drama while supporting the caste based society division all the time. May God help us.

The interview nowhere discusses the main issue in the title. When did reservations start in India?
It is wrong to say the reservation was first started by the British. In fact it is part and parcel of Hindu society since time immemorial. The Hindu society is divided into watertight compartments as far as professions or means of earning livelihood are concerned. It is certainly not based on merit. It is the western education and thinking/ideas which has softened the division. Any way what is the basis of untouchability? Certainly merit is not the answer. The death of meritocracy?
The very basis of division,casteism, in Hindu society is the death of meritocracy. It is certainly not based on merit or economic condition. At that time, why didn't they think of economic factors as the criterion for backwardness? It was simply that the people were not denied their legitimate rights on the basis of their economic condition.
The original idea was to continue this reservation for just ten years. They thought things would change in that period. Reservation which was meant for just ten years has been going on for nearly 60 years.

I find it interesting that Dr Radhakrishnan uses the term "oppressed classes" here. By using such a term one 's attention is diverted from the true nature of India's so-called "oppressed classes" - that they are the victims of a caste-bases system. In India what is required in terms of a revolution is a "caste war" that will turn the tables on a Brahmin-dominated society. Such a war is inevitable. Ambedkar understoof the logic of such a war - it can be waged on many fronts - the economic, the religious (through conversions0, the military (what would then be dubbed as "terrorism", the social (through some form of education), etc. But what happens usually is that the upper caste intellecutals be they Marxist or otherwise who generally speak "on behalf" of the "oppressed classes" still try to make us believe that these are "classes" that are oppressed and not "castes", particularly lower castes. This is a means of pulling the semantic wool over everyone's eyes. It is good to be able to see through this strategic approach. Avy
Firstly, all rich dalits are taking advantage of reservations.
Secondly, all dalits and OBC from reserved category have no love for India, they take advantage of reservations and all leave the country and migrate to USA or UK or Australia and make those countries richer.
Shame on them.
Not a single ST/SC/OBC candidate has gone back to his or her village and set up clinics to help the people of their village.
All reservations should be stopped immediately and if reservations are to be given, it should be given to economically back-ward ST/SC/OBC candidates with these students signing a bond that they will continue to serve in their state of origin for 5 years after they graduate from medic/engineering college, after all it is hard-earned Indians tax-payers money and not Arjun Singh's personal funds or Italian lady - Sonia Gandhi's money or Prime Minister's salary which is going to fund SC/ST/OBC candidates.
Stop this nonsense or Congress - get out and go back to Italy
Take an example from Ambedkar, who converted hindus to Buddhism - All upper caste hindus must have mass conversions to Islam to take benefit of Arjun Singh's "27% reservations for OBC which consists only of Muslims in this category".
