there is nothing to be proud of for being able to spell a bunch of words correctly. now if some of these kids can find a solution to the riemann hypothesis then that would probably impress me a little.
I have read some of the comments saying that these kids are not Indian.
These Kids are very much Indian. In preparing for this bee, the kids of Indian origin raise money which goes out as scholarships to poor kids in India. www.northsouth.org through which almost all of Indian kids participate get trained and have given the money to over 1000 kids to go to college and complete college.
How many of you "Indians" have done something like that?
North South Foundation spelling bee competitions are the stepping stones for all Indians who enter into the Sripps Bee.
So Stop whining and encourage them. Believe me, they do more to India and people in India than any one who is complaining will ever do.

That is a good one Siva. It was a necessary information for the gentlemen who were questioning the significance of the event and the intergrity of indian kids. I always believed that it is partly, the LACK of information and statistical data that makes such folks post negative comments. To those who questioned about what these "Indians" do to India and their real "Indianism":-
First off, what is wrong in publishing an inspiring and informational news ? How many of you know the financial, cultural, medical and social contributions that these "Indian Americans" make to India ? Do you know the kids born and brought up here learn more Ramayana, Bhagavadgeetha and Mahabharatha than any kid in India? They might lack indian social and cultural exposures and they need help from a "strong accepting" India.
How many of you know the amount of aids flowing from Indian Americans during Tsunami, Earth quake? How many of you know, a huge population of Indian Americans react more strongly to those irregularities, corruption and those shameful events in India than the so called "Real Indians" ? Being outside India due to opprtnts and life needs do not throw them off from India.
Wake up rediff..they are not INDIAN KIDS,they are all born in US, and they are American. You ask the kid he is going to say he is American not Indian. Niran
I have been watching spelling bee for a long time now 'n according to what I have seen INDIAN kids have gained so much respect 'n fame in spelling bee championships. This might not be an INDIAN year but I have seen INDIAN kids winning it all 'n they have been acknowledged 'n recognised in USA bi time. Everyone has been asking me about our Indian Education system 'n they ask me "how come Indian kids r so intelligent?"

i saw the competition live and it made me so proud to see Indian kids as old as 10-13 yrs old spelling the words which most of us have heard first time in our lives .The achievement is making it there , in to the top 25 and top 12. And i think for sure it deserves to be on the news.
I too fail to see the signifance of this article in this daily. As for all the hype and hoopla surrounding the 'four Indians" winning the spelling bee - go get a life! What about the lalu's Fodder-Scam case or Jayalitha's case of disproportional wealth or Maya's or the cops who beat up, rape and terrorized an entire village because they would not give them checken - go do follow ups on real important stuff that matters, not feel-good no-consequence crap.
I really do not why the media is giving coverage to such as contest in first place and secondly why does the title say "Indians fail to win Spelling Bee". For the kind information to the editor of this atricle, the contestants were not "indians" but were of indian origin and that do not make them indians. Please stop sucking up like this. Also i read so many articles portraying "Bobby Jindal" as an indian though he is not...this makes me wonder if we indians lack self pride??? Come on folks!!
