Its not GOOD
by vinayak on Aug 14, 2006 03:50 PM  Permalink

This Bill is NOT meeting the agreement signed between Indian PM & US President. Its much different. This Bill is going to curtail india's sovereinity of its own security and carrying R & D in the field of nuclear science.

This is insane, India must safeguard its own independence asap before its too late.

Vinayak

A tie up with Iran
by Preetham on Jul 27, 2006 07:48 PM  Permalink

I followed the debate leading up to the vote very closey. I was really shocked when Representative Markey (D) tried to get a recommittal of the Bill with the addition of a clause that said US should supply India with the technology only after making sure that India is on its side when it comes to the Iran Nuclear program. I was sure that would have been a deal killer, as Dr. Signh surely couldnt have sold it to our Parliament. However Markey's proposal was defeated by more than 50 votes. But the very thought of proposing such a clause, which aims to control the independent decision making ability of another major sovereign nation in a strategic part of the globe, sent shivers down my spine. Also another important statement I heard all through the debate was "India has negotiated a better deal than what it wants, and it expects us, the Congress to set it right" .. Well no comments on that... (sniggers)

This is the problem with most of us. We have got stuck with the numbers while trying to find FAULT in the article. Does this oversight prevent the deal from going through? Wasn't there anything better to comment upon on this news ??

Totally agree with you. Every one makes mistakes. The article is otherwise concise and neatly written.

Number Mismatch
by Anakin Skywalker on Jul 27, 2006 12:47 PM  Permalink

"219 Republicans voted in favor of the bill and just nine against; on the other side of the aisle, 58 Democrats voted in favour of the bill and a thumping 140 against (an Independent Congressman voted in favour)." - Numbers donot match

IS IT THIS WAY ?

"219 Republicans voted in favor of the bill and just nine against; on the other side of the aisle, 158 Democrats voted in favour of the bill and a thumping 40 against (an Independent Congressman voted in favour)."

US Vote on N-Deal with India
by R.N.MOHILEr on Jul 27, 2006 12:28 PM  Permalink

Voting Figures indicated in the article "House Representatives pass N.Deal 369-68" seem to be read as "-----------------a thumping 140 Democrats voted in favour of the bill and 58 Democrats voted against the bill" instead of "58 Democrats voted in favour and a thumping 140 Democrats voted against the bill" as metioned in the article.

We need electricity
by Junned Khan on Jul 27, 2006 10:44 AM  Permalink

Last night I was on my PC for some urgent work. Suddenly the electricity went off and my comp shut down, leaving me in high tension. It came at 2 in the night.

The irony is that it is happening in DLF, Gurgaon, which is suppsed to be the most luxurious places in the country. And, its not happening for the first time. Infact, in the last whole year the situation has been like this. Very often, we all residents spend sleepless nights outside or on the terrace in the absence of electricity.

Power shortage is not only a big humanitarian problem these days but also a blocking element in our developmental pusuits. The moment power go off, people are left such high and dry condition as though they were living in the 16th Century. Nothing is left to do and the suffering due to extreme whethers here.

Its constant throughout the country and in Northern Indian States, the problem is very acute?

India's electricity needs are the third largest in the world, it cannot afford this shortage of MWs which is contantly threatening for the last few decades.

In this scenario, Indo-US nuclear agreement sirens sound good in our ears. Hope that it will solve my power woes.
