I followed the debate leading up to the vote very closey. I was really shocked when Representative Markey (D) tried to get a recommittal of the Bill with the addition of a clause that said US should supply India with the technology only after making sure that India is on its side when it comes to the Iran Nuclear program. I was sure that would have been a deal killer, as Dr. Signh surely couldnt have sold it to our Parliament. However Markey's proposal was defeated by more than 50 votes. But the very thought of proposing such a clause, which aims to control the independent decision making ability of another major sovereign nation in a strategic part of the globe, sent shivers down my spine. Also another important statement I heard all through the debate was "India has negotiated a better deal than what it wants, and it expects us, the Congress to set it right" .. Well no comments on that... (sniggers)
