India needs to pound downtown Islamabad with bombs for evey terrorist attack carried out by pak based terrorists. Call it policy of reciprocity. Get POTA back in full force, do not jail terrorist ,just kill them (so they do not hijack planes to release them).
This is a very balanced analysis on terrorism per se. The author didn't beat around the Bush but took a true clinical look at the scenario. More and more people around the world are asking why Osama bin Laden has not been caught till now, and why the so-called "War on Terrorism" was shifted to the Middle East. Bush and his league seem to be playing on the paranoia created post-9/11 among the good citizens of a democracy. A pity that the world at large is held hostage as a result of such short-sight and lack of vision. Vision cannot be expected from cloistered minds or through blinkered eyes. Mercifully, there are millions of cleared-visioned folk among ordinary citizens of all countries in this world.
I don't understand the logic of bringing US into the picture. If the US is ambivalent, so be it. Why should we depend on it for everything? Whenever a terrorist attack happens in India, it has become a fashion to bring US and claim that it is not doing anything about Musharaf. For God's sake, what has Indian govt done until now? Open the borders and increase the no of buses and trains to pakistan?? And openly support the terrorist for the vote bank? And passing the same old comments like "India will never kneel" etc which are in no way useful. Unless we show some spine and take some tough measures to build up internal security no country can help us.
Did the US tell us to repeal POTA? Does the US object or nuke us if the police and IB is empowered to deal strictly with the troublemakers in India? Does the US stop us if we dismantle the madarasas which are the harbingers of terrorism in India?
Unless the state of India takes tough stand i don't see how a country being ambivalent will harm us.
It is very convenient to assume that India shall use force against terrorists just as Israel is doing, hoping that it will get support from the international community, and most importantly from USA. But for this to happen we have to be speaking in one political voice since it calls for decisive action assuming that a full-fledged war( including a nuclear one ) would become inevitable. Are the people of this country one in arriving at this decision? This will mean all people forget internal differences esp. religious,caste-based etc, insurgencies are under control of the police so that the para-militaries are spared to perform duties at border, etc, etc. Pakistan's importance to USA will never be over, even if it meets its own end vis-a-vis terrorism because of the larger central asian game plan in the wake of resurgent Russia. China has always been a sworn supporter of Pakistan. Nepal and Bangladesh also don't have soft corner for our problems. So, are we politically and diplomatically strong enough to root out terrorism from the Pakistani soil cionsidering that a full-fledged war between the two will become inevitable.
The answer in short is: 'BE INTERNALLY STRONG FIRST'
these AMERICANS...up to 9/11 they did not even know terror..... after which they bombed AFGHAN FAST....while asking INDIA to hold on, to excercise restraint (1993 blasts, kargill).....and even now follow the same . These guys are not interested in solving our problems. how else can u explain them ratifying israel on THU that 'Israel has a right to defend its borders'?...what of us? and look at israel 2 of their countrymen are kidnapped and they bomb lebanon...and there 200 are dead and we look at diplomatic solutions from US and ask them if we could be allowed to hit back at the ISI or pak?....i think if ONE prmimnet figure a POLITICAN had perished in the blasts then our actions would have been much more fast...look at what happened to the punjab and Ltte ISSUES after indira/rajiv got assassinated...similary for this issue to be resolved i think a POLITICAL figures death only will put our machinery toa ction.
Why at all blame America for our plight when we have not hanged those 1993 bombers uptill today. It is not due to American pressure that our country still feed them. Those 1993 Bombay bombers not only still keep their heads but also their family members are living in Mumbai and continuing their neferous work. Let us eliminate all terrorists and their cohorts within our country and then we can nag Americans to help us eliminate the fountain head of world terrorism accross our border. Blaming America before doing our home work is unbecoming.
It has been rather succintly put across, but the US state dept.is yet to remove it's blinkers to the new realities on the ground. If Pakistan is an ally on it's war on terrorism, then N.Korea cannot be but it's bosom pal,for it has been supplying Chinese designed missiles to countries who are doing everything except bringing peace. This has surely not escaped their notice but then the blinkers are firmly in place. If the proxy war in Kashmir is not terrorism, then the US must publicly define it.Reams have been written & will be written on the US policies which are nothing short of being of so called 'national interests'then why all this hoo haa about fighting global terror; which did not exist until 9/11 ? Surely a super power can ill afford this.
The ambivalence is very nice term in the american contest! They (Government personnel) are all snobbish and adopt double standards. Else how they could sell their weapons through the world to small groups in every nook and corner of the world to dislodege, the local peaceful governments and enforce their policies thru their private enterprise. American interferance is causing problems in africa, middle east and in so many places and people of India and Asian nations are paying dearly for this.. OIL price rise is an example.
There is no ambivalence in America's stand...it is totally self centered as it always was..it knows it needs Pakistan support to get Osama and that's why it humors it. What if a few indians are collateral damage to Pakistan's desires as long as it keeps mum even if US bombs Pakistan's villagers! And London...when did they have another opinion besides Bush's !
