Lord Ayyappa and Women
by bhattathiri on Aug 01, 2006 08:12 PM  Permalink

Lord Ayyappan love all devoteess irrespective of caste creed and relgion.
I may humbly rquest to publish the following letter in the "letters to the editor" column after necessary editing.

I am writng this not to just add fire to the controversy now prevailing. Let wisdom overtake emotions among devotees at this time.

This is the only temple in India where religiuos harmony is prevaling.

It is most unfortunate that cinema actress Jayamala's reported revelation that she had touched the idol of Lord Ayyappa at the Sabarimala temple when she was 27, has sparked a controversy al over India. All medias are giving due importance to this. It is customary that women between the age-group of 10-50 are not allowed inside the Sabarimala temple. This custom is being practiced considering the celibacy of the God Ayyappa.

This Sabarimala temple is situated atop a hill in Kerala and houses a bachelor God called Ayyappa. It is purported that around the 14th of January, every year, a celestial fire - a Jyothi with healing powers - glows in the sky near the Sabarimala shrine. A controversy exists for this also.

What is the

Arent women human being?
by Wonder on Jul 21, 2006 06:02 PM  Permalink

Women has definetely some higher spiritual powers within themsalves. Men always feel unarguable against oppsite sex person whether she is grandmother, mother or sister.
He simply follows a way for his girlfriend or wife, like a dog following owner, though men is more stronger and provides no resistance agianst his dear one.
In ads on TV also we are watching more female models to promote the products as it is prooved that after watching beautiful women, men's decision power derates almost 30%, which leads him to even wrong decision manytimes.
One can say all this are the charracteristics of normal man.
So as God is at higher level than anyother normal human being and having magical characteristics and also power to control their mind over any dam issue, it is foolish reply that God will feal "disturb" by watching young lady.
Another argument is their menses as they are having between age of 10 and 50. But now a days it is so usual that girls are having menses at the age of 8 and also became mother at the age of 62 yrs.

So all the arguments are foolish & leading to only darkness.

Jayamala's claim!!
by S.P on Jul 10, 2006 09:38 PM  Permalink

What is this hue and cry for, just because a woman accidentally stepped into the shrine. If you have true faith in god and believe in him and what is this issue all about. After 19 years why did she even have to mention about entering the shrine. Why does she have to confess to some one about this. I believe Jayamala and temple authorities are making an issue out of nothing.
God's powers won't be reduced just by a woman entering the shrine or by a deity who did not perform the rituals according to the scriptures or books. If his powers are reduced by the above, then he is not almighty. It is people's mind set that has to change.

Regards,
S.P

Aren't woman human beings.
by Raghavan on Jul 10, 2006 08:01 PM  Permalink

People seem to have lost sight of the real issue in this controvercy.
Tradition is the transmission orally of some practices , beliefs , doctrines, customs etc thus handed down. The ban on woman into temples of age susceptible to period is not religious. It is custommery for the Hindus. All people respect it.woman do it voluntarily. It is hygenic. The discussions raging now regrding Jayamala exposes a lot of ignorance about religion ,custom, false beliefs etc and it is taking turns that are rather irrelevant to this issue,MORE BECAUSE OF THE TEMPLE PEOPLE ONLY who are confusing religion with custom, based on hygeine.
Jayamala is to be congratulated for setting in motion these arguments that shed light on so many things.
The custom is hygeinic and woman themselves accept it . It is not misogynic or religious . It is an insult to woman, the Hindu religion etc,to hold it as a religious ban. Since there is no proof that jaymala was in periods at the time of entry into the temople , there is no need for any ceremony in the temple . It is just a contivance to drain the temple funds by vested interests. That sspect puts the religion in bad light and denigrates the presiding deity.

sabarimala customs
by das on Jul 09, 2006 06:53 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

To all those who are trying to argue about this, please try to understand the reason for visiting sabarimala.
One is supposed to go through a 41 day vow to have a ascetic's life, giving up the daily comforts of family life(that includes sexual interest too).
People are supposed to wear only black, are not supposed to shave, not to eat non-veg,supposed to have bath and pray both in the morning and evening before any food is partaken etc.
Not allowing women is part of this as this will destroy the ascetic life thay are trying to achieve.
Now can any of you honestly tell me that they will not be excited if a young female touches them. Even the great vishwamitra was tempted.
Please note that this temple is there to allow this pratice(which iam sure many doctors would agree is a good thing to practice to spice up your married life).
If at all anybody needs to do anything, it is to ensure that only those who had completed the 41 days vows should enter the temple.
Do you know that this is one of the few temples in India that allows people of all faith to visit it.

RE:sabarimala customs
by Kiran G Parihar on Jul 15, 2006 04:01 AM  Permalink
Mr. Das,
How should I tell people like you again & again. You all are like "Ulta Matkaas" in which no water can flow.
Understand the real meaning of why these traditions & dont just vomit out the things that you have mugged up.
Parrots can also mug up the shastras. But understanding it is not the job of Popats like you. You will just keep on screaming traditions, customs, ascetic life & what not. Remember Sant Kabirs famous Dohas.
& Oh, can you explain how by wearing black or not shaving for 41 days bring me more near to GOD.!!!!. I await your reply on this post.

Respect beliefs and custom.
by Sunil Agrawal on Jul 07, 2006 10:27 AM  Permalink

We need to take bath before entering into temple. Why is that? Every temple, masque, and religious spots have their own rights and belief system. Jayamala is converted Christian. She is part of greater conspiracy to malign Hindu beliefs and Hinduism. Learn to respect others beliefs madam. Not every temple has the same rule.

Why Convent school's students need to wear tie? Why they need to speak in English only? Why nuns need to wear burqa style cloths? Why they sacrifice turkey on Thanks giving? Obviously these are their customs and beliefs.
