Aren't woman human beings.
by Raghavan on Jul 10, 2006 08:01 PM

People seem to have lost sight of the real issue in this controvercy.
Tradition is the transmission orally of some practices , beliefs , doctrines, customs etc thus handed down. The ban on woman into temples of age susceptible to period is not religious. It is custommery for the Hindus. All people respect it.woman do it voluntarily. It is hygenic. The discussions raging now regrding Jayamala exposes a lot of ignorance about religion ,custom, false beliefs etc and it is taking turns that are rather irrelevant to this issue,MORE BECAUSE OF THE TEMPLE PEOPLE ONLY who are confusing religion with custom, based on hygeine.
Jayamala is to be congratulated for setting in motion these arguments that shed light on so many things.
The custom is hygeinic and woman themselves accept it . It is not misogynic or religious . It is an insult to woman, the Hindu religion etc,to hold it as a religious ban. Since there is no proof that jaymala was in periods at the time of entry into the temople , there is no need for any ceremony in the temple . It is just a contivance to drain the temple funds by vested interests. That sspect puts the religion in bad light and denigrates the presiding deity.
