''Kalinga Nagar was a shock''
by labrea on Jan 20, 2006 09:31 PM  Permalink

Why a shock? It's common knowledge that the tribals have always been treated like wild animals and the cops have a long history of atrocities against them. Mr Jay is still touting the old socialist line, where govt is the answer to everything. In almost all developed nations, it's private enterprise which has developed tourism sector not govt owned businesses like ITC which has been a total failure - ever heard of Las Vegas?. If private business were free to go about their business without the strangling, inhibiting interference from power-hungry netas then India would have already been a developed nation. As it stands, it may take yet another century for India to just reach the stage of development presently existing in developed countries.

by Chitta Baral on Jan 20, 2006 06:46 PM  Permalink

Dear Editor:

This is related to MP Jay Panda's interview with Archana Masih where he talks about Orissa turning a corner with respect to education.

The central government spends Rs 4.07 on HRD-NH (institutes funded by the HRD ministry and inst of national importance) per person in Orissa, while it spends Rs 177.12 in Delhi, Rs 28.10 in West Bengal, Rs 25.12 in Karnataka, Rs 17.79 in Tamil Nadu, Rs 17.09 in Maharastra, Rs 17.08 in UP, Rs 16.2 in Jharkhand, Rs 16.05 in Andhra, Rs 14.5 in J & K, Rs 13.38 in Punjab, Rs 8.52 in Haryana, Rs 7.9 in Kerala, Rs 7.39 in Chhattisgarh, Rs 7.2 in MP, Rs 4.87 in Gujurat, Rs 2.59 in Rajasthan, and Rs 1.87 in Bihar.

I.e., GOIs spending per person with respect to HRD-NHs, in comparison to Orissa, is 43.52 times in Delhi, 6.9 times in West Bengal, 6.17 times in Karnataka, 4.37 times in Tamil Nadu, 4.2 times in UP, 4.2 times in Maharashtra, 3.94 times in AP, 3.56 times in J&K, 3.29 times in Punjab, 2.09 times in Haryana, 1.94 times in Kerala.

Educational opportunities in Orissa
by Chitta Baral on Jan 20, 2006 06:36 PM  Permalink

MP Mr. Jay Panda is partially right about the educational opportunities in India. While the state government and private organizations have helped in bringing up the educational opportunities of Orissa. the central government has neglected Orissa with respect to central institutes. Orissa has no IIT, IISc, IIN, central university, Institute of National importance, etc,; and recently a proposed National Institute of Sciences by the earlier government has been ignored by the new government.
