India-baiter
by sbk on Jan 27, 2006 04:46 AM  Permalink

The Guardian is a typical India/Hindu-baiting newspaper of the west. It never misses an oppurtunity to lament about how underdeveloped and miserable India is, how all its Hindus are fundementalists and how right Pakistan is with regard to India. No wonder Rusbridger was invited by The Hindu.

PS: Why is the newspaper called "The Hindu"? Doesn't it appear ironical to anyone?

Newspaper going extinct IMPOSSIBLE !!!
by VINOD on Jan 20, 2006 06:58 PM  Permalink

After a hard week's work, when I get up on sunday morning after 8 am, I want a thick, bulging, newspaper alongwith my cup of filter coffee. Not a computer or the TV to know the latest news. A newspaper is my 74 year old dad's best friend, not the TV or computer.Newspapers are newspapers. They can NEVER be replaced.
VINOD,
Chennai.

Re: Are newspapers going extinct?

Of course not! Whatever said and done, newspapers are here to stay albeit with lesser mortals reading them.
In this age of electronic media and internet (I myself am an IT guy), I agree that the faster news travels, more is the advantage for both deliverer and reader.
However, if one sees the quality of reporting that online reports have compared to the print media, it can easily be seen that good old newspapers beat them all.
Moreover, in a country like India, where more people are illiterate and below poverty line than the elite, affording even a TV is a life-time dream for the masses, let alone computers, hand-helds and what-not.
The stark reality has to be understood by the authors and ground conditions better studied.
What is relevant in the western world may entirely be opposite in the sub-continent and vise-versa.
Other advantages offered by newspapers are timely editorials, research-based articles, etc and interactive pages (like crossword, Jumble, scrabble etc) to name only a few.
On the lightr side, I can even take it to the toilet while waiting for u-know-what. Try and take a laptop and let anyone tell me it was an enjoyable time!
Long live newspapers!

Newspapers going extinct? No way !
by Sudeep Pradhan on Jan 19, 2006 04:18 PM  Permalink

I think we are all missing a very important fact here, the editor of Guardian represents a very myopic view which extends only from america to europe. He is forgetting there are large parts of the globe which are still do not have phone access let alone internet access.
Perhaps he has not met people like me , who collect newspapers articles as a hobby. Newspapers are tangible pieces of information in this virtual world. Do not forget they are pieces of historic relevance, something which we can refer to whenever we want and there is no fear of a loss of data ! What will happen to the information if we have a large scale computer network breakdown or computer crashes ?
Information is vital in today\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s world it will be very risky to put it all online .Has no one heard of cyber terrorism ? Government websites being hacked? How can we assure the same amount of security to online media when we are so prone to hacking and deadly viruses?

We talk of blogs, but how many of us are regular readers of other peoples blogs unless ofcourse, they are being written by known personalities?
These are just some of the question swhich pop up into my mind when i think of this issue.
