Whats the big deal
by Bhargav on Dec 22, 2006 10:52 PM  Permalink

So what's the big deal if the chief justice a DALIT? Why does media like rediff.com have to use this D-word in order to offend the actual person. I think its high time that Indians should stop using such kind of words which will be offensive to the actual people. I don't even know why such news make HEADLINES. Can't they just say, "NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA APPOINTED" instead of using the D-word. I don't even think that rediff.com should use such words that will start another hype with the controversial stuff that is going on in India right now. Is there a way to contact rediff.com about and complain???

Justice Balakrishnan new CJI
by Kunuthur Srinivasa Reddy on Dec 22, 2006 10:34 PM  Permalink

It is a criminal act to divide Indians. Is the post of 'Chief Justice of India' reserved for dalit due to which Justice Balakrishnan has been appointed to the post and his name is prefixed as Dalit by the reporter? Are you not reminding Justice Balakrishnan about his caste? Are you not polarizing people on the basis of caste, religion, region? Do you find such statements in advanced countries of the world when positions are filled? Dividers of India on caste, religion, region, sex, race considerations constitute the potential danger to the country's independence and solidarity but not the so called extremist elements who only helplessly and frustratingly kill people by their animal instinct with the false hope that they could eradicate bad elements of the society, though in reality is not possible.

NEW CJI
by pushpendra singh on Dec 22, 2006 10:27 PM  Permalink

we should recognise the fact that merit is not the monopoly of any particular community.people should be judged by their calibre irrespective of their caste, which is still an indication of parochial outlook of indian society. An egalitarian social order is possible only when each one gets equal opportunity for his/her development which should be democratic in nature.

Justice Balakrisnan, the new CJI
by VK Sharma on Dec 22, 2006 10:27 PM  Permalink

He is there because of his merits, not because he is a dalit.I would request the media to pl shun this habit of highlighting the caste of a person if he happens to hold an office of eminence; they ought only to highlight his deeds & achievements, not the caste.
Thanks
VK Sharma

CJI and Caste
by Suman Nanda on Dec 22, 2006 09:35 PM  Permalink

It is heartening that the gandhian dream of democracy is happening, with people from all sections of society are reaching the pinacle of success due to their calibre, diligence and determination. However, when Balakrishnan's appointment makes more news because of his caste and not caliber, this questions our own perverse way of observation. I am sure a pre-perverse generation(VP Singh, Ram Vilas Paswan, Sharad Ydav and Arjun Singh) India wont have noticed that element in the CJI's CV, but then after Mandal, life was never the same again.
I was defeated and let down by my own generation, when the Rahul Gandhi, Jyoti Scindhia, Sachin Pilot and Omar Abdullas are silent observers of the act. VJP's hindutva is merely an anti-others propaganda and not a self cleansing motto. The harvards, the IITians and the educated of my generation are incapable impotents.
Fair enough, at least the judiciary still breaths the air of calibre. Media is learning to get its spine back. Jessica Lall and Priyadarshini Matoo's have gotten their justice.
We will survive this holocaust of caste based hatred as well, may be in 100 years.

New Justice of India should bring in new betterment in the judiciary system
by Shobha Nair on Dec 22, 2006 09:32 PM  Permalink

Respected Sir,Congragulations, and wish you good luck in improving the judicial system of India which is totally ruled by the evidence which is sometimes vanishing or get bend due to the delay in the cases.Fast desposal of cases would be welcome as that saves time and money.A society and country is the reflection of its judicial system so here we would welcome a lot of change for the betterment of the poor and the nation on whole.Shobha Nair.

A Phenomenal Achievement
by jerome on Dec 22, 2006 09:28 PM  Permalink

It is a great acheivement to have become the Cheif Justice of India. These days it becomes very imperative for the media that they never fail to write the caste in the case of Dalits. The writer would have communicated effectively if he/she had listed the Cheif Justices that India had since independence with their respective castes. Unfortunately the media always fail to do that in case if those are Brahmins or non-Dalits.

For the journalist who wrote it
by Vishleshak on Dec 22, 2006 09:23 PM  Permalink

I dont think it serves any purpose mentioning he is Dalit. It appears as if you are trying to convey that though he is Dalit still he could become CJI. As if it is a different thing for Dalit and non Dalit. Please restrain from highlighting such things. We were never told cast of previous CJI, same should have been here.
Any way I am confident that the confidence the common people have in judiciary will continue.
