Mumbai immigration deports Kids
by Manmadhan Pillai on Dec 21, 2006 12:06 PM  Permalink

This immigration official does not deserve to be in that seat.He should be stripped off his duties immediately, never to return. Let him do some sweeping job till he realised his mistake.

Get well soon - Applies to both Immigration officer and Vijay
by Ganesh on Dec 21, 2006 11:37 AM  Permalink

I feel that Vijay and Vaishali learn their basics first. If they have not leartn about discipline in life in spite of living in US for 9 years, I think they deserve this.

On humanitarian grounds deporting the kids without letting them wait for an hour is ridiculous.

I can only say that "Get well soon" Immigration officer!

well done officer
by jguyy on Dec 21, 2006 11:24 AM  Permalink

The officer has acted according to rules, that should be praised.

If any indian citizen enter any other country without visa, will they allow.

The person should have a basic common sense to have a visa, that too while you carry kids with you and family.

This person might hav thought, India will allow any one and everyone, but all those are old story

I would ask rediff the post the version of the officials, instead of posting this one sided story

officials are wrong, but so does the family
by Dinesh Madne on Dec 21, 2006 10:02 AM  Permalink

Wait. What are we talking about.

First the family forgets Visa and all imp travel docs. A family who is staying in US for long and travels to India freq will certainly keep all travel docs together. Every Indian in US knows, if you are travelling to India, since the day you book your tickets, you keep all your tickets, passports and visas in ONE PLACE. So wasn't it the mistake of these people who forgot their visa.

Second, Immigration officers did not allow a transit visa. Well, they did a mistake on the Humanity Grounds. But did they do anything wrong legally? Did the family have all docs to make sure that the officials provide a visa. I know, Indian Immigration officers go crazy when they see NRIs. But this story is not a proof of that.

Third, the family says they were allowed 45 mins only to get the fax. I think that is sufficient time. BUT wait, the article also says they were back on the flight within 2 hrs of landing in India. So what was it ... 45 mins or 2 hrs?

And Fourth, if mr Vijay feels ashamed of being an Indian for some stupid mistake of immigration officers, then I would say he doesnt deserve to be an Indian.

Great job by Mumbai Immigration
by Shankar on Dec 21, 2006 09:38 AM  Permalink

Mumbai Immigration has done their job to the best of their abilities.
It is the carlessness of the parents to have not travelled with the correct documents of their own children.
Would the parents have reatcted the same way if they would have faced a similar situation with the US immigration officials at New York?
Would this complaining be published on rediff.com had the incident happened at New York's JFK airport?
Start owning up to your mistake and stop blaming others for your mistake.
It is of no use comparing yourself with a French citizen and saying he was "white" and all that.
If you would have cared for your children, the problem would not have occured.
Equality for all

Story is one sided clearly to create useless debate
by Narendra on Dec 21, 2006 09:31 AM  Permalink

Normally, everyone carries photo copies of documents. There are many families who take Indian officials for granted. If you have travelled so many times, this cannot be counted as mistake but experiment and may be arrogance. If you are particular about GC why not respect Indian documents? Well all NRIs take the lesson.

Visas
by sun prince on Dec 21, 2006 09:28 AM  Permalink

Definitely, double standards on the part of the Mumbai Immigration Officials....they should have deported the French guy as well....

Nevertheles, a BIG BIG BIG mistake on Mr. Vijay's part....how can he NOT take his kids' visas with him....the two things MOST important to carry with you are Passports and Visas while traveling abroad...i'm just unable to fathom how one can forget their visas....even more dumber are the officials who let him out of Boston with out visas....

Immigration problems
by Kathir on Dec 21, 2006 09:18 AM  Permalink

1. Both Vjay and Vaishali is educated and they are living in US. Now a days lot of airport threaten happened all over the world. Forget the visa is a very big mistake.

2. Both are accepted that the problem is their side. It is genuine. Normally in our India Mumbai Immigration is very tough. So that they behave like this. Anyway both are children they have to thing about and give a chance... It is absolutely wrong..

3. In your letter you stated I feel ashamed of being an Indian... Remember our Indians only not plan properly (You planned this trip 3 or 4 months before itself but u forget to the visas)

Any way as a human tentancy Mumbai immigrations people should allow them...

absent minded parents
by Pb on Dec 21, 2006 08:58 AM  Permalink

Its highly the irresponsibility on part of parent, if you don't have passport all other arguments don't even apply.

passports / travel docs are the first thing that come to mind when planning international trip, I wonder how can one be so absent minded

Thx

Pradeep
