the war that brought fame to indira gandhi as iron lady was nothing but pure sign of foolishness and that was in genes inhertited from tragically illogical and near ideot policies of her father. the legacy continued with rajiv gandhi and we see the same reflection in the congress president sonia gandhi (gang ho totally mindless - can't u see this blunder of reservation?) lets come to the point. all actions of indira and rajiv were logical and sequential extensions of nehru which started in kashmir and ended in china. and the nation is still suffering and will continue to suffer?
why bangladesh was liberated? wat was the strategic motive? people say it was to weaken pakistan.. wat steps were taken to ascertain indian supremacy? wat was the return or gain of war? (usa ensures the gain of war- oil control out of so called iraq liberation). nothing, shamefully nothing was bargained.
what we got in return? millions of bangladeshi illegal immegrants which are in turn vote banks of all border states .. direct boost to islamic fundamentlism and vandalism and of course terrorism. huge cost of border petrol and lots of killing. the list goes on and on.
You bet! That was the only alternative left to India. With millions of refugees pouring to W Bengal, Bengal's ecnomy was devasted and is yet to recover. No other state helped Bengal to share that gigantic economic burden! Had there not been a war half of Bangladesh's population would have migrated to W Bengal
Do you think it made any difference to India???certainly no... 1.the statistics say that from Tripura, Assam to Bombay there are millions of Bangladeshis illegally living in India and they are still infiltrating the borders. 2.Is Bangladesh a friendly country?answer is again no.Everyday we come across news of clash between Indian army and BDR. 3.Are the Bangladeshis have good feeling about India?no once again. India should have annexed it......atleast, through East Bengal we would have good transportation links to the eastern sister states and they would have economically benefited. As long as the creed of Islam dominates the religion of Bangladesh, it is never a friendly country to India...
I think the decision was right at that time and the Indian Army did well as it always has. What is wrong with the Indian way is its politics with no vision for the future and the way they should modify the present to get a better future for the country. All decisions even now in foreign policy are taken with a knee jerk reaction with no idea of whats going to happen in the future.
We should have maintained enough influence in Bangladeshi politics, development and economics...which is what would have helped the relation between the two countries. We are doing the same in Nepal and in Tibet....with no vision of future security or relation. I hope we realise it before its too late in all cases and we are surrounded all over with a very hostile neighbourhood.

There was no other way than to help Bangaladesh. But the mute point is that whatever our gallant army achieved on the battlefield was lost as usual by our so called Politicians on the Negotiation tables.Had our Politicians(rather Politician as it was Indira Gandhi and the only Indira Gandhi was a sole politician others surrounding were mere eunuch)shown the wisdom to take advantage of the situation and settled all perrinial problems with Pakistan and the erstwhile East Pakistan(like sharing of water,Farakka Barrage etc.)and asking B'desh to take every citizen of theirs back,we would not have been in such pathetic situation today. skj
Yes. India should've helped liberate Bangladesh for the simple reason that it is very much easier to have a small nation instead of East Pakistan.
True Misses Gandhi should have, then negotiated a settlement on Kashmir in return for the 93,000 Pakistani POWs captured after the war, but what is gone now is gone forever.
Of course we did! Withot that step, India would have faced many critical problems. Howevr, it could have been done in a better manner.
A neighbour is a neighbour and especially in South Asia, evryone is busy pulling others' leg. India could have guarded herself better in terms of boundary, stricter foreign policy and tit-for-tat principle.
Now that it is a very well known fact, terrrorism has got only one religion, and it is high time not repeating old mistakes and tighten its grip over the mischievous neighbours.
Thankfully independent Bangladesh exists. Else we could have been en-circled by Nukes. The situation of Bangladeshis would not have changed (may be even worse) if they were part of pakistan. Illegal migration would have continued.
