There is a bigger problem than reservations and education.

350 million people STARVING (for which YOU and I are indirectly responsible) every day for a meal in India.

I propose a nationwide credible "minimum" income guaranteed system for every one whether they work or not will bring in "dignity" instead of desperation for the working poor and "inheritance taxes" will stimulate "compassion" instead of collusion.

Such system will prevent all socioeconomic issues in India viz farmer suicides, dowry deaths, child labor, fear, frustration, corruption, bribery, prostitution, terrorism etc.

In USA,UK,Germany,Portugal, Brazil, Belgium etc this system is implemented.

Democratic country
by Indian on Dec 06, 2006 10:37 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

We cannot cure a disease till we diagnose it correctly.
This is the last statement mentioned in your article. The suggesstions (reserveation in private sector, etc..) your mentioning to solve these problems are wrong. In a democratic country every individual has equal opportunities. If reservations quota increased from now, few sections of people going up and others coming down in their living standards. How do you justify this. If the reservations are continued for 30 years forward caste will need reservations in the future.

Reservations are legislative (not judicial or society) response to historical social evils to certain sections of the society.
Government should scrap reservations when 85% of marriages in India are inter-caste or inter-religious.

The comments from author regarding desecration
by Pranshu B Saxena on Dec 06, 2006 10:26 PM  Permalink

Hi,
The author bemoaned that the we the urban classes are simplifying the complicated situation which Dalit angst finds itself in. At same time, he simplifies the motives for deseceration of the statues. Whenerver mayawati comes to power or with connivance of dalit leaders of all parties, lot of common ground public land is occupied by these politcal wallahs by simple expedient of putting an Ambedkar statue and claiming land around it which is then misused by few. So suddenly, several play grounds became residential property with an unattended statue in one small space. Others places, Kids saw their cricket grounds halved with a statue in place of square leg umpire, the parking area for a market place saw a statue and resultant illegal structures next to it (actually owned by non-dalits) decreasing open area around the market and no parking! Statues were just ends to means which really hurts Babasaheb 's legacy. The desecrations can be work of urchins, drunkards as the case in kanpur was, a local Zaheer Khan missing the stumps and testing Babasaheb's keeping skills, an angry motorist, a drunk motorist as well as casteists, and those who benefit from the angst.
Regards Pranshu

Who is this person?
by Amit Jain on Dec 06, 2006 09:27 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Before I post some comments, can "Dr." Raj or rediff tell us more about his background? Is he a medical doctor or Ph.D. (honorary or otherwise)? What is his field of study? Was he eligible for reserved seat (either in education or job - if he had a job ever) and if yes, did he utilize it? Was he from the "creamy" layer or not? Once we know this kind of background, we will be able to respond properly. It's very easy other wise to preach from rooftops about what ails the country and how to resolve it. Even my 4 year old son has certain views about how to get India forward ....

very pathetic
by sathish on Dec 06, 2006 06:14 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

it is very pathetic and hurting to see all the comments posted... Everyone has left the atrocities done to bhotmange family and desecration of the statue and started debating about reservation. I suggest all read the article in the "sunday the indian" about this.. This 18year old girl priyanka (daughter of baiyyalal bhotmange ) has been gang raped and she died and some continued to rape her even after she was reduced to a corpse... When is this all going to end.. And for those who talk a lot about reservation based on caste (blaming our government) , tell is this how others should behave to a set of people only because they belong to a particular caste. what kind a treatment is all this? Unless there s a change in the minds of all people theres no solution to this... This kind of mental torture due to dicrimination can only be felt. for those who talk you cant understand our pains..

Disgusting ...

I do not agree with the author - reservations is not the the solution, rather it causes more problems. Please get your facts right - most of the reserved posts are vacant not because the govt is not willing to act - but (in most cases) because there is no one qualified enough to the basic level to fill up the posts. Instead of banging heads on this reservation thing, it would be better to educate people and teach them some life skills.

Reservation is not the solution...ATTITUDE is...
by sanjay on Dec 06, 2006 04:38 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The reservation given to Dalit's in last 55 years, wont upgrade the life style and status of living of dalits.Dr.Ambedkar himself had suggested that the reservation should be only for the initial 10 years of independence. In all higher education institutes we have reservations for Dalits.Almost all the government offices and other companies governed by Government, have reservations or, majority of Dalit's or from other casts. Now, the point is why didnt Dalit's able to cultivate this opportunity? When the topic comes for voting every political leader will speak about DALIT and RESERVATION.Our ellections are also based on DALIT and NON-DALIT voting. Before elections, there are pooja's,meetings, gatherings, medical camps and what not organized in places where Dalits are at majority.Have any body from Dalit's cross checked for their leaders visit in to those areas after they get elected? It is because DALIT's are being used as VOTE BANK and NOTHING ELSE.The private industry SHOULDn't allow any reservations. After getting benefits in higher education (medi, engg & other fields), let the OPEN category, reseverd category shold be judge on merit & merit only. The ans is ATTITUDE change.

Interesting rant. You may want to extend it.

Let all Brahmins who are less than 5% population agitate for a separate state or nation if they they don't like reservations.

byknown, why u target Brahmins alone.Even Dalits is not community. Daiits is group of communities.Even in their group, there is upper community and lower community .
one who belongs to one community said i am suprior.
Actually this is mind set of every human being is that i am supiror, what i worship god is suprior.
But this is right thing. one always tries,is superior. one who not tries is dalits

Reservation for Dalit
by Mandeep on Dec 06, 2006 01:16 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The writer has done good analysis of the situation but I wonder why is advocating reservations? Reservation is not a solution of any "Dalit". In real situation middle class SC/Sts has taken the advantages of reservation and have become wealthy and powerful. State is again giving the benefit of reservation to their wards. Do they require benefits of reservation when their parents are at influential positions in the society?
At the same time dalits who are poor or living in rural area can not go to school in absence motivation/ money. Here lies the mantra of their upliftment. These politicians or NGO should really work on this agenda by providing them good quality education free of cost. Unless we educate them, they are not going to be accepted by the upper crust society. The Politicians like Mayawati has done nothing accept filling moneyboxes.
Instead of showing unity in rioting and disruption of normal life in Country, these dalits need to be united to get self upliftment by opening schools and sending their wards to school...we can call it as People's Movement...Like we had in Gujrat..called White Resolution and result is Amul Dairy which is a International brand.
