The comments from author regarding desecration
by Pranshu B Saxena on Dec 06, 2006 10:26 PM

Hi,
The author bemoaned that the we the urban classes are simplifying the complicated situation which Dalit angst finds itself in. At same time, he simplifies the motives for deseceration of the statues. Whenerver mayawati comes to power or with connivance of dalit leaders of all parties, lot of common ground public land is occupied by these politcal wallahs by simple expedient of putting an Ambedkar statue and claiming land around it which is then misused by few. So suddenly, several play grounds became residential property with an unattended statue in one small space. Others places, Kids saw their cricket grounds halved with a statue in place of square leg umpire, the parking area for a market place saw a statue and resultant illegal structures next to it (actually owned by non-dalits) decreasing open area around the market and no parking! Statues were just ends to means which really hurts Babasaheb 's legacy. The desecrations can be work of urchins, drunkards as the case in kanpur was, a local Zaheer Khan missing the stumps and testing Babasaheb's keeping skills, an angry motorist, a drunk motorist as well as casteists, and those who benefit from the angst.
Regards Pranshu
