They got what they deserved
by Rahul on Aug 25, 2006 11:41 AM  Permalink

You annoy your co-passengers, don\\\'t listen to the flight crew, run around when you\\\'re supposed to be sitting with seatbelts fastened, use phones when you\\\'re not supposed to -- don\\\'t be surprised if you get in trouble. Hopefully that\\\'s 12 fewer annoying co-passengers now. We need to enforce rules better in India too. On an Air India flight I was on, a distinguished-looking man -- a VIP I think -- was caught by the air hostess smoking in the toilet. She told him sternly that she knew what he was up to and please don\\\'t do it again, and he just smirked. They should arrest such people and lock them up for three days or longer.

Are passengers racially profiled
by Raj on Aug 25, 2006 11:38 AM  Permalink

I travell by plane quite a bit and what i understand is everthing these people does is for the security of the pasengers in the plane and instead on arguing with them or opposing with then we should coperate. If you are innoscent u will be freed and what if these people are really culprit and get it to plane rth??

And also rediff should not promote this kind of stuff in the minds of people...

nothing wrong with that
by voodoo on Aug 25, 2006 11:35 AM  Permalink

i don't see anything wrong with racial profiling... 99 out of 100 terrorists are asians/arabs.. so it makes more sense in concentrating more on asians/arabs and naturally people get nervous when a group of asians do something that is out of the ordinary...

we have to pay the price for people from our race indulging in such mindless and stupid fanaticism...

while at this, i also feel that there is nothing wrong when a muslim with a beard and headgear is viewed suspiciously... most of the terrorists are muslim fundamentalists... so unless the muslim community takes upon itself the task of rooting out terrorism from within itself, these kind ofprofiling will and should continue for the sake of safety and security...

Yes there is a racial aspect - I think Black have had it' time for Brown'
by Sid on Aug 25, 2006 11:26 AM  Permalink

Yes There is. And much of it goes to cinicism and fear among these obsessed, hyperreactive and paranoid western system. Let me share an experience- I was visiting New Jersy in August 2004- and was video filming the locality and some police man took me to interogation- they thought I was a terrorist(being brown). They asked me questions if I knew that video filming is not allowed(they said 'ven't you read newspaper- That was my 3rd day in NJ). In the interogation they contacted everybody from FBI and I don't know who all to see if I had any record. I expalied a lot of good things I was doin but was of no help. While this was being done at the near by detective place I saw another set(two) detective coming in- by then the first set was convinced I was not a terrorist, but the second set of visiting detective also interogated me with some funny questions, like if I'm attached to any terrorist organization? etc. The last question they asked was the funniest and I almost made a big mistake- They asked me which religion I follow- I replied in most secular(being an Indian) way that 'I believe in all the religion'- Then they asked categoricaly If I was a Muslim?I escaped being a Hindu!

Safety of Air Passengers.
by J.N.Mahanty on Aug 25, 2006 11:18 AM  Permalink

To ensure the safety of Air Passengers, I think the Air Lines have the full rights to check the passengers in all necessary ways. After all the safety of Passengers is of paramount importance and there shd be no compromise on this aspect.

At the same time it is expected that all passengers extend fullest cooperation to the Security Agencies and the Airlines for carrying out their duties, howsoever unpleasant the task may be.

racial bias?
by prasad on Aug 25, 2006 11:18 AM  Permalink

It does not look like bias against Asians per say, its more towards muslims, especially the ones dressing up and looking like muslims...

Are passengers racially profiled
by Pratik Dutta on Aug 25, 2006 11:15 AM  Permalink

The actions of the NWA and Dutch authrities were completely justified when the said passengers were involved in activities which they were not supposed to do, even after being asked repeatedly to refrain from such. Their race and appearance added to the suspicion, as time and again such acts of terrorism have been attributed to the Islam fundamentalist, although, I am sure, the vast majority of the Muslms do not approve such acts. So, nothing much should be read into the racial profiling.

Its just fear
by amjad on Aug 25, 2006 11:15 AM  Permalink

They; the west are really scary. they fear a lot. 9/11; 7/7 both were asians. lokk in business; first the japanese; now Chinese rulethe world.indians lead in the software side. they only invaded effectively in the middle east only; an easy target. where they able to get in any other majo asian power? no.

They only answer back where they feel they can get in easily. they went easily into afghan and iraq; becos the world was supporting them. look N.Korea and Israel; do they have the balls? no. So; those scary guys fear anything asian now.

its not discrimination; but extra ordinary fear that makes them take such idiotic steps

Racial profiling
by Himmat Rathore on Aug 25, 2006 11:11 AM  Permalink

On an EK flight from AKL to SIN via BNE, I was the only person stopped for special explosive screening at BNE during our transit. All other passengers were of European origin. I was the only Asian.
