Very Amusing
by vicky s on Aug 26, 2006 05:16 AM  Permalink

I was very amused by seeing the reaction of people to this incident, It is not uncommon to see different level of chlorides at places where rivers meet the sea. The intresting part was the similar behavior exhibited by the educated people and the news channel correspondents who I think really need to grow up, needless to say people in our country think from heart and not from brain.

POSSIBLE EXPLANATION, SCIENTIFIC !
by SAYAN AICH on Aug 22, 2006 04:04 PM  Permalink

After the heavy downpour in areas in and around Mumbai the rain water, percolating through the soil, has drained to the sea. Since the average density of rain water is lower than that of sea water(due to dissolved salts ), the former must have come up to the upper levels. The actual SALTY water must be a few metres below. Thus what seems sweet is actually the rain water. As the two layers of water mix, the apparent sweetness would disappear. This process of mixing shall take a few days, possibly.

seawater
by Denzel patrick on Aug 21, 2006 10:16 PM  Permalink

hi everyone,
the sea water would have turned to sweetwater due to excess spillage of acid and on account of it changes in PH value.this is what is done in swimming pools to remove alkaline.

No Miracle only density
by Pranav Jayaram on Aug 21, 2006 07:20 PM  Permalink

Hey Guys dont trip over such things ; its just a natural phenomenen though I do not want to ewihter discount Miracles or GOd , all I am saying is that it is a regular phenomenen wells near the sea. Fresh water has a lower density that sea water hence tends to float over it. Hecen in a Underground water bearingf area near the sea it forms a egg like shape from which water can be sfely drawn to a certain exetent .If some aquifer were releasing larges quanities of fresh water into the sea in a slow manner then this water will float on it draw a deeper sample and it will be salty, most likely it is likely to be the MMCs leaking water supply system at work and not God. So please worry since we will get that much less water in our taps.

Superstition dominates science
by abbey on Aug 21, 2006 06:52 PM  Permalink

Incidences like 'seawater turning sweet' and 'Ganpati drinking milk' prove that Indians tend to think suprstitiously. Anything they hear they want some miracle in it. If they start analysing things and be curious about how this happens then such incidences will not repeat again. We believe presence of god and one day god will appear to rescue from all the problems. When someone hear of this sort then they feel god is going to appear. Everyone is waiting for miracle that would bring happiness to everyone. Probably this psyche is the reason behind the mass hysteria we experience when incidences like 'seawater' and 'ganpati' happens.

Increased inflow
by Sajnikanth S on Aug 21, 2006 07:20 AM  Permalink

Hello,

This phenomenon could be explained by the increased inflow from the river nearby typically during monsoon, resulting in more dilution and less contamination.

Regards,

Saj

How did seawater turn 'sweet'?
by labrea on Aug 21, 2006 12:20 AM  Permalink

It might just be remnant flood water, a broken water main dumping tons of 'sweet' water into the creek or even worse, a broken sewer pipe - with sea water being much heavier, such brackish water would float to the top, which to people used to drinking crappy water, would seem 'sweet'. The health authorities should prepare themselves for the massive epidemic coming their way pretty soon.

Pathetic knowledge about ground tables and SDI
by JATIN PATEL on Aug 20, 2006 11:46 PM  Permalink

Sir,

I am really sorry to read all this, but what makes me more sad is the blind faith turning fanatic like ganesh milk drinking and allahs karishma! When will the ellite SC/ST/OBC branded highly qualified government civil engineers rise? After excessive rainfalls and with dams getting build in the region, the ground water SDI goes down. Ground water SDI is highest in summer, when ocean waters salts start to percolate in to the ground water. To maintain salinity of ground water is very important for cultivation of crops. Ground water might (purely a guess) have reached its saturation, migrating sweet water towards ocean. So if something like this is the case, let me ask those allah's karisma friends, will they pump sweet water in areas like Bengal, Orissa, Saurastra, where ground water is also salty? I have to ask because the competent civil engineers in government have not been able to figure this out for years in our great dumb-o-crazy. Atleast will somebody start to keep trail of SDI and quality of ground water for public records? I'm really baffled by 21st century india with 16th century babur thinking and 10k yrs old Ganesh milk drinking saga! It's time for Har Har Mahadev.
