It was sad to read the article and the experiences the writer had to undergo. The real issue is that barriers exist not just between communities but within communities too. Hindu non vegetarians cannot get housing in many parts of Malabar Hill/Prabhadevi etc. I would ask my friend not to be disillusioned but to continue to fight prejudice in all forms. What he and his wife experienced is bigoted prejudice but that exists between Shia and Sunni, upper and lower caste Hindu's, vegetarian and non vegetarian Housing societies and the list is endless. It is upto educated people like us not to succumb to these divisive traps and all our collective efforts will make India a better place if not for us at least for for our children? If our past was bitter should not our future be better???
I am shocked to read this article, I never knew this kind of discrimination existed in India. I would like to take the time to strongly oppose it, as I am highly proud of the multi cultural face of India. I hope and pray to god that this changes and people realize that there is a much bigger religion than any other...HUMANITY.
Mumbai has lost his heart, not the Kalkations. Property prices are low and standard of living comparable...why not look at shifting to Kolkata and experience a different India.
my doctor hindu cousin is married to doctor bohra lady and own joint nursing home in hindu area. In 2001 riots of gujarat they faced angry crowds who deliberated harming their property but desisted only because husband was hindu.
Riots are 99 % times initiated by people living in exclusive localities only, so such areas should be compulsorily made into mixxed ones and more and more interreligious marriages encouraged.
Hi Syed, Why dont you complain about this to the police. This shouldnt ever happen in India, and its elements like those builders, that are making situation difficult. A rupee in any indians hand is still a rupee, its not marked by the religion of the holder.
Its not just Hindu-muslim divide. Its also hindu hindu divide which exist. Regionalism also plays a big role in Mumbai's real estate. My personal experience is most of the society's are governed by those who have crossed 45 years of age. These people are relatively more conservative and finnicky as compared to younger generation .
