Re: Why I won't live among Hindus
by Raj on Apr 11, 2006 12:49 PM  Permalink

Hi,
I dont think that being in Hindu area or being in muslim area realy make you feel good or bad. All that matters is the condition which leads the people to go far beyond the human nature and turns to violetn riots. Its says that when more than 10 dogs gather, can kill even a lion. The same condition is here. When riot burns out, it no longer agree with soft words. nd if that riot is amoung two cultures, then its all safe to move out of it. Dont ever feel that being in muslim area wont fetch you bad times. We are indians and will be indians. i feel realy sad the thing that went on you. i ask sorry on the behalf of all hindus. Its all in our hand how we deal with the situation. I give you simple example. If you be in Hindu area and have close hindu neibours and frineds, then certainly its far better than to stay in muslim area. They (hindu) could help you much in greater extent than the muslims.

Nice Article
by Sandeep K on Apr 11, 2006 12:48 PM  Permalink

I have never been to Mumbai n was surprised to know that they even now distinguish people based on caste n place. Me being at bangalore haven't experienced any of those riots as in mumbai. Have heard a lot about those riots from friends. I agree with u in saying "It takes a little longer to change mindsets in Mumbai".

Why I won't live among Hindus
by Anuj on Apr 11, 2006 12:47 PM  Permalink

Dear Mr. Ashraf,

Very sad to note the points highlighted by your good self.

All this while we delhi (right I'm in Dubai) people thought of mumbai as being a very accomodating place... but the concerns mentioned by you prove it otherwise.

With your profile at rediff.. you can easily look for a job in Delhi or maybe join the rediff office in Delhi (easiest way out).

Yes but the treatment you have received is not entirely without a reason... I have no incilnation to get into a blame game or side with anyone. But the point to be noted is that it is the silence on the part of the liberla/moderate muslims that has led us the country to this point. All communities today have a problem but in varying proportions. For the myths & hype of extreme attached to the muslims... it is imperative that people like you & many others unite & take a stand to clear the misconceptions.

I know this is no easy task & a lot has to be seen thru to make it happen... but-but-but... its not IMPOSSIBLE. Fundamental change/revolution in the life of one eprson can effect a change in the society as a whole.

Please feel free to write back if you have the time & the incilnation.

Regards
Anuj

Why agitate!!!
by Kaushik Das on Apr 11, 2006 12:47 PM  Permalink

I wonder why this column came up in the first place. A stray incident of discrimination does not portray the picture in the whole country. We are a secular nation and should be proud of that.

I understand that the writer faced horrific experiences during the riots, but it was both sided, even Hindus went through that. And sadly, by writing such a piece you are doing nothing but fuelling the passions in a sensitive issue which might just bloom into another catastrophic incident.

And from an Indian to another, if you indeed feel so discriminated, you should disown your citizenship and move to some other place. Maybe Bangladesh would treat you better.

We are a huge nation of different creeds and discrimination would arise. You wont stop looking at one of our Mongoloid brothers from a detached perspective for example. Everyone faces some amount of inconvinience. Even I was discriminated against, but in the greater interst of the country, which gave me so much, I adjusted and moved on as a loyal citizen.

So my advice is that you please look around and see that not all Hindus are like what you percieve them to be.

Why I won't live among Hindus
by K.R. Sreenath on Apr 11, 2006 12:45 PM  Permalink

I was shocked at reading the above article. I was under the impression that we are first Indians and then the other things like Hindus, Muslims etc., If a housing society discriminates a minority religious group, it should be brought to the notice of the concerned so that some remidial action could be taken up and such conditions do not exist. I would like to add that Muslims living in India are also Indians. How can we ever seperate them from our society. It is wrong and will lead to a lot of tension. I have said many times that Hinduism is the most progressive religion and it welcomes all. I have read somewhere that Hinduism is not a religion but the philosophy of Life. It teaches us the ways of life and how to be a good person. People who try to impose the ideologies of Hinduism should first read all available material on Hinduism before talking about the religion.

Discrimination amongst Indian Communities
by Ratna Sharma on Apr 11, 2006 12:43 PM  Permalink

I come from a family where the parents witnessed the pain and agony of partition and moving from Pakistan to India.

My family settled in the central part of India where not many different communities exist and as a result I didn't come across various cultures in India. I firmly believed that we (Indians) are one, the way we were repeatedly taught in school.

Almost two years back I came to USA for studies and realized that we Indians are not one, "United we stand, divided we fall" is just one old saying. People are united according to the states they belong to, the language they speak in and are reluctant to embrace somebody outside the community.

There is a visible discrimination in the invisible boundaries that we create around our respective communities and limit ourselves within them. People usually will not accept this fact but sooner they realize the better it will be for the nation.

The last time Indians showed their integrity was during the Kargil war. It is not necessary to fight a war to be One, we just have to fight and win the war with our inner selves and accept the other communities/religions as a part of ours.

Please dont lose hope: Be tolerant
by vagesh on Apr 11, 2006 12:42 PM  Permalink

Dear columnist...I feel sorry for what happened to you. But i do feel that maybe this is more of a Mumbai situation. I am a Kannadiga from Bangalore and as you know we Bangaloreans are the most accomodating. Only 30% Bangaloreans are Kannadigas. Why? Because bangalore has a young, educated crowd who thinks positive. It is just a matter of time when there is altogether a new generation who has no memories of what happened in Ayodhya & mumbai just like todays generation has nothing against British. Why..because we have no memories of British riots and abuse. Be tolerant and please dont try to write such articles.

Its the same way ...from the other side of fence, Mr. Columnist.
by an Indian on Apr 11, 2006 12:42 PM  Permalink

Whatever the columnist is saying over here is the same what Hindus would have faced while trying to look for a House in a Muslim dominated locality.

Does he mean to say that a Hindu is more welcome in a Muslim locality than a Muslim in a Hindu locality ?
If that is the case, I am sorry I beg to differ.

It is true that there have always been instances for religious riots and argon in India but both the communities have been a part of that .

But Muslims have been living in this country from times immorial and if still they have the doubt that if they should consider themselves the part of India ( part of mainstream ) ...they need to do serious introspection.

Morever, I feel that the Media ( Rediff.com ) in this case
is doing no good to themselves or to this Nation in giving people
like this a platform where they can spat some vemon..and start the chain (
like I have done so ).
