thats the reason
by sriram on Oct 03, 2005 04:42 PM  Permalink

Dear Author,
Thats because of this Big Brother, chennai is not a mumbai or Delhi.

Because of this Big Brother, women are not raped in public. After all in Delhi and Mumbai things are so common that people are not able to distinguish between a relationship and a rape. They have to wait till the next day for the daily or the T.V to confirm its really a rape.

I am not a 60's or 70's guy, but at the same time i believe in respect for the society and its members. Ofcourse NOT as defined by ShivSena or PMK or Dalit Panthers.

Not doing all that you have mentioned above(except the college incident and your imaginary one at the last) is one way of showing respect to fellow citizens.

Kissing in Madras
by Shri Kant on Oct 03, 2005 04:40 PM  Permalink

Sad, but true. And when we in Bombay (I insist, Bombay, Madras, Calcutta -- when the names changed, we lost our innocence). The yesteryears' "moral police" culture of the much-maligned Shiv Sena is spreading everywhere: Dress code (Bhopal, Bangalore, Madras), moral code (Bombay, Bangalore, Madras), language code (Madras, Bangalore), et al... Is it a coincidence that the "secular" parties got the names of Calcutta, Madras, Bombay changed? Jai Jaya, Jai Sonia!

Kissing in Chennai
by Kamalesh on Oct 03, 2005 04:39 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

The author misses one point.

Kissing is prohibited only in public places. Nobody prohibits you for kissing or for that matter doing anything to anyone privately. It is noone's business to be verifying what you are doing in closed doors.

What is wrong in policing in public places. Police are meant to police public places.

Does the author fit to talk about ''Culture''?????
by Perumal on Oct 03, 2005 04:37 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Firstly, the entire column is extremely biased and corroded with anger. I dont find any truth in it. I agree Big brother is little too bad but the recent survey says that Chennai is the safest city in the entire country.
So many years and still if civilisation has left some traces, it is chennai. I dont understand why the author just portrays life as "pubs, kisses, sex...bla bla.." I wonder if she/he is fit to talk about culture only..

Being a chennaiite I am atleast proud that a girl can walk around with safety unlike bangalore or delhi where guys are waylaid every night. And most importantly chennai doesnt produce "great cultural MMS" like the one from Delhi Public School..

A classical city is supposed to be classical and there is no harm in being little restraining!!

" I dont find any truth in it". ...Excuse me!, Youy don't find any truth in this. Recall the annanagar incident, park hotel incident, anna university dress code.... You are obviously not reading latest news.
"Chennai is the safest city" -- So, why was Stephany followed and murdered in night?

Friend, you are wrong in questioning in the credentials of writer. What is YOUR credentials of culture in criticizing her's? So, answer her questions and not evade issues.

"chennai doesnt produce "great cultural MMS" like the one from Delhi School.." Yeah it only produces the largest number of adult porn c.d's. (it's a fact!)

What classical city are you talking about. You Tamil's labour in the myth of your civilizations and do not look beyond your purported myths. There is no harm in restraining people but the question is who should do that? You!!!

Before rushing to condemn the writer for speaking truth, just ponder over the issues and you will realize that "Big Brother" attitude is nothing but talibanization of our culture.

Yeah I agree with the simplicity of Chennai. But we are also to blame somewhat for this.Go to Marina Beach and you will have hundreds of couple kissing and fondling each other. Its difficult to even move there bec of these people.
Be a bachelor and you enjoy and fight for this but be married and see how much angry it makes you

Kissing in Chennai
by Raj on Oct 03, 2005 04:35 PM  Permalink

India has started to become a regressive society where in political parties and 'other' associations now decide what one should do/not do. We all know it is for cheap publicity.

It is disgusting to read about these episodes. God save India.. especially Chennai !!

too much of exaggeration
by Mohan on Oct 03, 2005 04:34 PM  Permalink

I think u are exaggerating this beyond a point, to the point of disreputing chennai city and its culture as a whole, based on few incidents. One expects a column to be based on objective facts as much as possible possible and not exaggerate things in this way...
