Places worse than Chennai
by Amit on Oct 03, 2005 05:54 PM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I guess this is fine with chennai as ppl there are more traditional as compared to other part of the country.

I am from faridabad , NCR (National capital region), situation is even worse here. Big B can catch you even if you are shopping with your girlfriend in a crowded market. What else , they will harass you .... even sexually harass your girlfriend in front of you. And you cant do anything and end up paying some hefty amount in order to get out of the situation.

This way, I feel, chennai is a much better and safer city.

I am not sure if we can ever get rid of these anti social animals out of our security force....I guess Never.

What non sense this columnist is talking about. We should learn to respect our culture. Civilisation is not about violating rules and going back to stone age when polygamy is the norm.

If people are talking about intrusion into their privacy when they start making kiss and love in public it is themselves to blame. Nobody is going to bother if you keepthings to yourselves.

Talking about the dress code.

wouldn`t these same young future professionals wear the suit when they get the six digit salary by selling themselves to an IT company some few years down the line. Can they talk about personal freedom to dress anything they like to this future bosses.

Liberty and freedom can go as long as it doesn`t interfere into others and spoil the values of others and society.

If people like this columnist are allowed further at some point they may come out with the idea that people can come out naked and it will be intruding into their privacy to asl to dress up. Will we accepting this non sense - THINK

How do you define Indian culture? Are the nude sculptures at various locations across India an Indian culture? Is Kamasutra Indian culture? How do you define culture.I guess we Indians have become hypocrats. We have a great culture and we are proud of it,but that does not mean we ban every attempt by man to express love.Do you go and destroy all those nude sculptures and burn copies of Kamasutra which are displaying people expressing love.I think we should be more open(here I don't mean kissing and smooching in public)and tolerent to accept this natural process of coming together of two human beings.Like holding hands together and sitting peacefuly at a public space should not be considered as a crime.

Ayooo Amma............Whats Going On in your Land
by T R Sriniwas on Oct 03, 2005 05:49 PM  Permalink

Dear Friends , Indians and Country Men

I have seen such strictness only in SAUDI ARABIA. Well I think these guys have been inspired from there and I presume they are bent upon turning Tamil Nadu into Hindu Taliban Style Governanace. I just wanted to ask some questions........why are you making jackass of your self in front of the whole country??..In age of IT why are pushing Tamil Nadu into stone age?.....

In that case if you bent upon doing it , then please do the following things :

1: Ban Fashion

2: Ban Television.

3: Ban Internet as it against "Great Culture"

4: Ration sex in marriage and mantain log book.

5: Make Burkha Compulsary for all women ( Howzzzz that !!!!! ).

6: Ban Pepsi and Coke and start Idli-Sambhar Cola

I think by these methods , you will ensure all like minded people are driven away from your "Great City" with your "Great Culture"

I am surprised at all the extremism...

I understand if any "such" social behaviour is causing any problems to general public , then it should be avoided but otherwise we should let people exercise their democratic rights.

I firmly believe that the culture should be preserved and respected but cmon guys there are many better ways to achieve it....

I do agree but the scenes are exaggerated too much
by Murali on Oct 03, 2005 05:49 PM  Permalink

I m a Chennaiite and I do agree with what are mentioned in the article. Still there are colleges in Chennai where talking to opposite sex is prohibited. And you know, who owns engineering colleges in Chennai, The Politicians. They have their own rules. I don't know, who gave the powers to the policemen to interfere when a girl and a boy talking in a park. But, If you r ready to give him 100 bucks, you can do anything you want. Permission Granted.

These kind of problems were also there in Mumbai by the parties like ShivSena. These Politicians want the State or Country to run as they wish.

Is it Democracy or Despotism???

And what mean by spoiling the culture? "Kissing in a park" - Does that mean our Culture is getting spoiled? Do they mean to say, without knowing how to kiss has our population crossed 100 crore!

I think these people wud be happy, if still "Sati Pratha" exists!!!!

Yet another columnist (YAC !) sitting before company laptop and trying to squeeze dry the latest concern of the journalists, bloggers, and the like.

Moral of the story: Never actually ask 'real' people for their opinion on such issues before writing the column - because, Hey, we are journalists you know ...

Chennai' s SimpliCITY
by Kalyana Venkataraman on Oct 03, 2005 05:46 PM  Permalink

Dear Writer,

This is in reagrd to your "scenic" portrayal of Chennai.

Firstly, Little do you realize, it is one of the most cultured cities in India.

In regards to your Big brother portrayal, I believe it over exaggerated!

What sort of liberty, do you need? at What expense?

It is not a matter of culture. You should enrich your self with the culture of cities not criticize it. What do you gain by aping the west? In that regard, it is our culture which created the Kama sutra.

Learn to appreciate the subtleties of the Chennai.

More important do not mock your own traditions and culture, without understanding it.

I am 24 and have lived abroad for more than half my life and trust me, it is important to know who you are and how cultured you are. People respect you for that. Not for apism, thats normally reserved for monkeys!

Chennai Culture
by Mahesh S Kumar on Oct 03, 2005 05:43 PM  Permalink

The authour has tried to touch upon the culture followed in Chennai. If at all he is from chennai and not just someone from other states making a living here would he know what the entire issue is about.

People from North settle down in South and then chastise southern people in being the way we are. We are proud that still the very sense of traditional values are being followed makes Chennai a truly Great City and not by the way the author tries to make a mockery citing "Great Chennai City".

By the way , India is undergoing a phase of culture shock no doubt but that doesn't mean we totally give away our way of life.

Look at Bombay, Delhi and Bangalore, the very basic moral values are looked down. Assuming that aping the western culture makes one similar is rubbish which i believe is the root cause of the problem.

Pure Southern people will dare not venture into somethin stupid as even kissing. The influx of culture from North and abroad forcing down something not really healthy in the long run and chastising the South for not behaving so is completely foolish.
