On reading this column, its apparent that the general perception of chennai is totally distorted. Iam a final year engineering student of a reputed college in chennai and it is very disheartening to read certain things that generally dont happen here. it may be true that the police stopped the proceedings in the disco, but then the morals of the story for each scene is a total exaggeration and utterly ridiculous. The police in chennai are far more humane when compared to other states and also dont say that stopping people from kissing each other happens only in chennai.
Your feature or so called one on Chennai\\\'s new big brother cops is just sensationalism...... and a mere exaggeration of what happened atleast in the Park Hotel episode.... Not long ago was the hotel warned for flouting the basic rule of keeping the bar open into the wee hours of the day. Why? Imagine a group of people well drunk and creating so much noise in your neighborhood? Will any action that stops such activity also be Big Brotherly??? No, for sure, as your privacy and civilised life is at stake??!!
And for the park scene..... Yes, there ought to have been a stray case of some cop overdoing his mandate.... But in the Gandhi memorials and Valluvar Kottams of this city, do you say that all are couples or would be married youth?? Hold your breadth... Even a causal visit to these places will you be able to see school girls and boys, intimate, with their uniforms - what harm in discipling that lot who are just infatuated and lay at stake their lives???
Yes, the cop has no business to tell us to learn Bharathanatyam or Kuchipudi, but sure will step in if you attempt Miami\\\'ising Chennai...........
Yeah this is really sad and funny that we are still unable to see ourselves in 21st century. And cant accept something that is natural. I remember once , a song - sexy sexy mujhe log bolein, created havoc and it changed to - baby baby mujhe log bolein, from the movie khuddar.
And now even Srk's daughter can say to her grandmother , that you are looking sexy. We try hard to accept things and change ourselves for something that doesnt harm others. A kiss is seen as obscene, we are really progressing nowehere in our thoughts and take much time and waste much time in useless things, rather than do something good for society
i just want to say that this article about chennai bashing. i think it serves the purposes. i accept all the above said things happen in chennai. but is it not happening in all other cities now
dance bars banned in bangalore & mumbai.
all things you have said except the park story and college story are a ploy by the politicians to score some brownie points.
and it is same in every city..
and in the park incident i do not know what do you want to tell. park is a public place where people come with their families and spend time. dont make it a place where couples can come and do everything as you said. atleast the indian people are not ready for such a cultural shock where people can kiss their partners in a public place.( then why should you single out chennai).
Based on one stupid incident "Women protesting on an actoress's remarks" you can't generalize the whole article which you've jus written. I'm not here to say what you've said is wrong. I'm here to say that I'm sick and tired of people generalizing stuff about Chennai. Talking about kissing in public places in Chennai...I think we all know what happened in Mumbai when a couple were kissing on the beach. A drunk cop took the girl in the booth and raped her. There is even a law which states that Kissing is forbidden in public. I read an article on that in rediff during the Mumbai incident. Cops come into bars only when the bars are open beyond closing time. Else they don't have any business there. This happens in Bangalore too where the pubs close by 11 PM.
And talking about Engineering colleges... Yes, i agree they have a stupid dress code. But it's stated in a paper which the student has to sign when they join the college. Each college has it's own rules and some colleges do have dress codes. And again... this doesn't happen only in Chennai.
